Counter Attack kept me turning the pages well into the night. Alexis Stone is a confident officer who puts her fear behind her as she pursues the one pursuing her. Nathen Landry is a kind-hearted but tough policeman who wants to protect Alexis. She's been gone from his life for several years and he's not about to let something happen to her now. As always, Bradley wrote a story that pulled me in right away and kept me reading. And an unexpected twist took me by surprise. I received a free copy with no expectations. Opinions are my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Counter Attack" by Patricia Bradley. This mystery centered around chess and the moves involved in the game. I have never played chess and was a little confused by the moves, but this didn't take away from the story and the mystery. I did figure out who the suspect was but I still enjoyed the story and had a hard time putting it down. Patricia Bradley is one of my favorite authors, and she continues to be. I highly recommend this book.
I received an ARC of this book by the publisher through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
This is the first book in the "Pearl River" series. I enjoy reading Patricia Bradley books and this was no exception. The main story featured chess - the moves made echoing the story which was a good addition. I was able to guess the murdered early on but that didn't destroy my enjoyment of the story.
There is a second story. For this, I didn't feel it was as necessary and the story could have stood alone without it. Overall though, I enjoyed the book and read it fairly quickly since I was interested in it.
I receive complimentary books for various sources including, Netgalley, Authors, and other such sources. I am not required to write a positive review and have not received compensation.
I loved this book. There is plenty of suspense and drama. Alexia’s life hangs in the balance. Who wants her dead? I did figure out who some of the suspects were, but I’ve read a lot of suspense and know what to look for.
In a day where law enforcement is looked down upon, this story reminds us that while there are bad cops, most serve to keep us and their families safe. They also see horrible crime scenes that affect them as a person.
I highly recommend this read!
Killer leaving a chess piece and drug dealers are two of the plots in this new series
Alexis is an intern sheriff and Nathan is the chief, giving us the romance in this new series.
The suspense wasn’t as much as in her other books, and being this is the first, it maybe in the following stories.
Overall good beginning took awhile to get into the plots and how they run together.
Readers will enjoy this story taking place in Pearl Spring, Tennessee
Given ARC by Net Galley and Revell. for my voluntary review and my honest opinion
3.5 stars
Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley starts a new series in Pearl River. From the first chapter, I was interested in a story that featured a serial killer that was killing and leaving white chess pieces. However, as the plot moved along, Bradley had a secondary suspense plot line dealing with drug dealing. Not really what I wanted. The chess pieces' murder did not seem to be the most important aspect of the novel. However, the villain showed their card in the first introduction. I knew who it was pretty early on. Of course, I kept reading because I wanted to see if Bradley would allow the murders to take over the plot. of course, this is a romantic suspense novel, so there is romance between Alexis and Nathan. They have a past and need to deal with the past and their budding feelings toward each other. Since the series takes place in this small town, I believe they will be making another appearance. I just hope their romance does not take over the plot. I would like a long courtship back to the familiar. I would like to see more of the suspense element in the next story. Overall, Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley has the making of a wonderful suspense novel, and I know Bradley can do it, but this one needed a little more serial killer focus for my taste.
I received a complimentary copy of Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley from Revell Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.

Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the first book in the Pearl River Series .
Counter Attack has a lot of action but personally, I didn’t feel the suspense as much as I have in her other books, I had the killer picked out early in the book.
I recommend this book for those who like romantic suspense .
I have always believed you cannot go wrong with a book written by Patricia Bradley, and this is no exception.
Alex Stone is an undercover detective with the Chattanooga police department, with the future goal of being the Police Commissioner. She is in the Lemon Tree Bar, undercover, where several young women were last scene before found murdered with a White pawn in their hand. She is hoping the killer will make an appearance tonight. Alex is dressed in a similar fashion as the victims were. By 11:00 p.m. Alex decides she might as well leave so lets the two officers shadowing her know that she is leaving and to wait five minutes before following her. In that delayed time, the unexpected happens.
Sheriff Stone is the Sheriff in Russell County and Alex’s grandfather, who has suffered a heart attack and while he is recovering, he asks Alex to fill in for him. This requires that she move back to the small town of Pearl Springs and live with her grandparents, who also raised her. She would also most likely give up her dream of being the Police Commissioner since she suspects her grandfather, in his seventies will not return to the job as Sheriff.
This is a fast-paced story, with lots of action. Filling in for her grandfather, Alex also finds herself collaborating with her former high school crush, which creates other complications. There are many unpredictable situations, along with some tense moments and surprises. I could not put the book down until the last page was turned.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions and comments are my own.
