The story was a wonderful idea, but I found I got quite frustrated with Augustus.
I realised he had a bad first marriage and was betrayed, but I was not able to like his character when he treated his second wife poorly for the faults of his first.
His second wife was lovely , sweet and loyal.
But strains are put on the marriage because of his lack of trust.
Enjoyable mostly although a little frustrating at times.
Worth a read.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
Thanks NetGalley for the eARC.
This was a tough one for me. I found the writing style really engaging and strong, but I struggled with the plot a bit. The miscommunication trope is not my favourite, so some of this made me want to scream at the characters to just have a conversation! It was wrapped up nicely at the end. A good book, but probably not my cup of tea.
Lady Beatrice Thorpe learnt a harsh lesson in her first season and has no intention of being hurt again. Our heroine knows from her family that true love can be found and settle for nothing else.
Augustus ,Earl of Hardwick has also learnt his lessons the hard way. Trust is not something that comes easily once it has been broken.
An emotional historical romance filled with lovely characters. You might have
met some of them in the previous book in the series, but you can still enjoy this one on it's own.
Good fun.
Beatrice has had a chequered past. She has been the subject of gossip by the Ton but was saved from ruin by her sister-in-law and has vowed never to love or trust another man.
Then she meets Augustus, the Earl of Hardwick who is a widow but has returned to London to find a wife. A wife who will do his bidding and not stir up memories of his unfaithful first wife.
Augustus has kind eyes and a gentle manner. Beatrice feels like she might be able to trust again, fall in love again. However, when Beatrice is accosted by a rakish young man just days before her wedding to Augustus, she must reap what she has sown and suffer her sins. Augustus packs her off to Hardwick Hall and sets sail for Italy.
How will Beatrice manage a run down estate? When will Augustus return? Why does she wear gloves, even at her own parties? Most importantly, will they ever trust and love each other again?
I loved this story so much!! The opening few chapters sucked me into the plot and it kept me hanging on. The spice was well written, but I would have loved one full scene. In no way does this diminish the book and I might just put this in the re-read category. Anyone who loves mystery, angst, secrets and regency pomp will love this book! I must read more from Emily Royal!
Gossip, Trust, Heartfelt Confessions:
We first meet Beatrice attending a ball with her guardians.
Across the ballroom Beatrice sees and connects with another pair of eyes she knows she can trust. Or can she?
Meeting Augustus the Earl of Hardwick has both Beatrice and Augustus taking us into a romance with lots of deep emotional situations.
Heartfelt love confessions, a joyous marriage; or is it?
From this point on the plot changes from meeting the man of your dreams and falling in love to a devastating shock that sends them on a new path to finding a happy ending or maybe not?
This is quite an involved story that grabs you and doesn't let go very easily.
An enjoyable story with interesting characters excellent plot with many surprises.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy for my honest opinion.
Mature Advisory:
What can I say.. i really love emily.royals writing . And her characters are mostly interesting. This book had the right amount of love, intrigues, jealousy and Spice. I really liked the Main characters, even though at some points they were a little too much over the top. Thank you to netgalley for letting me read this e arc in exchange for an honest opinion
An incredibly emotional story, of love, betrayal and redemption. She learned to trust again when she looked into his eyes and fell in love. He fell in love just as fast but shades of his past caused him to make mistakes. Only the possible loss does the most important thing take precedent and HEA is achieved. The main characters are strong and admirable but there are many moments where you’d want to gnash your teeth or bash something! Which makes this a truly hard book to put down!
I received an ARC of this book from Netgalley and leaving my review voluntarily.
I was drawn to Augustus and Beatrice as both have lost in love and find something wonderful with each other. Heartfelt and emotional story with a worthy happily ever after.
4 stars
Th writing is good but on many levels it's a depressing book, probably realistic to the time. The heroine made a mistake and attempted to elope. Her cousin rescues her. He and his wife are keen for her to find her HEA. The hero had a promiscous first wife that he loved passionately. He was willing to look upon her son as his own. The child dies, Augustus goes off travelling to Europe. On his return his friends suggest he marries someone who wants a quick wedding. He meets Beatrice and thinks he's found another love but is hounded by the idea she might also betray him. Some horrible people set Beatrice up in a house party and it does look as though she's betrayed him but he doesn't really acknowlegde his jeolousy, marries Beatric, beds her, dumps her in the country and then goes travelling for two years on the proceeds of his very impoverished estates. Meanwhile Breatrice betrayed for a second time by a man becomes hard and unfeeling. Augustus returns and is then surprised she doesn't forgive him. Both very damaged charcters. With this sort of depression I'm not convinced I want to stick around for more of this series.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I have always enjoyed this author's writing, however, I found this novel incredibly sad and depressing, especially given that the main characters only reconciled about 97% of the way through the book. Riddled with mistrust, manipulation on the part of others, suspicion, and unforgiveness, I felt the unfairness of the situation towards Beatrice. Although the book is well written, I, unfortunately, cannot say that I enjoyed it. The plot ended on a positive note, but it seemed as if it was a case of too little, too late. I received a copy of this novel as a gift through Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Beatrice and Augustus are two new favorite romance characters! Both hero and heroine have been burned by love in the past, and both are hesitant to believe in their happily ever after. When they meet, they manage to overcome their fears and get married, but misunderstandings and residual trauma cause them to question their love. I love that Beatrice grows as a person who fosters her independence, while Augustus realizes that trust is needed to make any relationship flourish. A thoughtfully written and romantic regency story.
I absolutely adored this story! A quick read, everything here worked for me, and was exactly what I didn’t know that I needed to read ❤️
I have only recently discovered Emily Royal as an author and already she is becoming one of my favorites. She has a great writing style which makes reading a pleasure and her characters are always interesting. Ruined by the Ton is no exception. I loved Beatrice from the beginning and understood her feelings that men were not to be trusted. I have not yet read the first book in the series, so I didn't know a lot about Henrietta, but I loved her right from the beginning too. I was not a fan of Augustus when he was first introduced, and I really did not like his friends (if they are to be the male main characters in future books, they will need to go through quite a redemption process). My feelings for Augustus did change when he started his courtship. I understood why he was unsure of Beatrice after what happened at the ball a few days before their wedding, but he did not handle things well. I really wanted him and Beatrice to at some point in the story discuss what had happened and for him to both realize Beatrice was not at fault and to admit he should have listened to her at that time. I also really wanted some sort of resolution between Beatrice and the women who set her up - it would have been the final part of Beatrice becoming a stronger, more self-assured person. The third thing I feel this story was missing was a thorough confrontation/discussion between Beatrice and Augustus about his abandonment and what he got up to in Italy. We the readers know he was faithful, but I'm not sure he really told Beatrice that fact. I was frustrated by Henrietta and Giles telling her she needed to forget about Augustus's abandonment and focus on the future - Beatrice had every right to be upset with him, especially since he continued to accuse her of being unfaithful every chance he got. I'm not saying she shouldn't come around to forgiving him, but she should have been made to feel that she was right to still be hurt and mistreated by her husband. I know I sound as if I am not at all sympathetic towards Augustus - I did like him by the end (after he stopped being suspicious of her relationship with every young man in the area) and understood his disappointment every time he was not successful in winning Beatrice's trust. I wish she hadn't been prompted to fully express her feelings by Augustus being badly injured, but it did allow for a new beginning for the two of them so I'll let it pass.
Hurt by his cheating first wife, widower Augustus is looking for a woman he can mold into a perfect wife to leave in the country. Beatrice, betrayed by a first beau, cannot believe her luck in finding someone new to love. They both have major trust issues which take quite a while to work out. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.
