This is the story of Carl, who delivers books for a book store. He's in his 70's and has worked there his whole life. The running of the bookstore has recently been taken over by the owner's daughter, who seems to resent Carl and wants to do away with local book delivery. One day Carl meets a 9 year old girl who insists on helping him to deliver his books and his life is never the same after. A great read.

Oooo this was a good one! I could not put it down!! One of the better books I have read in such a long time. So heartwarming. I am a sucker for books about books but a book lover and bookstore storyline? Yes please! I loved the characters and the relationship Carl had with them all. I really felt the connection with them. This one did not disappoint and I will be highly recommending it. Bravo!!

Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Door-to-Door Bookstore by Carsten Henn.

Carl works for a bookstore, and adores his job. His favorite part is when he gets to wrap up books individually and deliver them to his weekly patrons. He has given them all literary titles like Mrs. Longstocking, and Mr. Darcy, and they are always anxiously awaiting their books. But a new helper is on the scene, a nine year old girl Shauscha who is anxious to help, despite Carl's hesitation. But soon the unlikely pair form a bond that will get Carl through some of the hardest times of his life.

I'm pretty sure that this book is a translation from German, but I'm worried that I'm too American to enjoy the read. The relationship with Carl and Shaucha, while never implied inappropriate, still made me uncomfortable. I felt like a lot of the story and dialogue was translated to maybe what a senior in HS would submit for a writing competition, not bad, but also not super polished.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! It was a wonderfully endearing tale, full of quirky characters. If you are a fan of A Man Called Ove or The Keeper of Lost Things you will enjoy this as well.

I'm more at home reading about crime than a book of fiction that's almost one that's completely easy reading and has a good outcome. This book does have many characters and each one of them has some hidden agenda that they have somehow the need to take care of. Mr. Carl Kollhoff is the door-to-door book sales person and he has his customers which weren't really known to him until he was followed on his rounds by a 9 year old girl called Schascha who was full of questions and kept up with Carl through his whole route. She makes Carl to understand the people who he delivers his books to. Carl finds the people in need and figures out who has the necessary skills to help them. It happens that Carl is fired from the bookstore he works for and the story goes on from there. It's an interesting book because Carsten Henn writes with a knowledge of books that are meaningful to each of his characters. I would recommend this book for it's ever present little girl.

There are readers who will read anything they get their hands on. Other readers need some guidance - they want a good book and need someone to hand it to t hem. Karl is that kind of person. He has a small delivery route for some special customers.. A rather precocious 9,( almost 10) year girl joins him on his route. The two of them make quite an impact on the route members, and eventually on Karl himself. An absolutely marvelous book,.

Bookseller, Carl Kolhoff delivers books to his customers after he closes for the day. On one of his sojourns he meets Schascha, a nine year old who decides to accompany him on all his trip and suddenly, nothing is ever the same for Carl. This book is a life raft in a world that seems filled with anger and hatred. a delight for book lovers and people who want to see some good in the world for a change
