This was not at all the read I expected. I thought it would be full of well to do women gossiping while they got their nails done( and acting badly). That part is true, but it’s really Melanie the salon owner, and DCI Fisher, who alternate chapters and tell two very disturbing tales.
All Melanie wants is for her salon to be successful, well that and also to help young girls who have run away/left home due to unbearable circumstances. But Melanie’s idea of helping someone isn’t exactly shall we say normal. I’m not going to say more because of shark infested spoiler waters, but Melanie is like a light switch. She seems to have only two ways to be: normal or cray cray.
DCI Sue Fisher is investigating the disappearance of a teenager, the daughter of one of Melanie’s clients. But Sue is hiding a secret of her own. One she knows that if her coworkers find out, her career will be over.
Both POV’s are dark, though Melanie’s is much more involved than Sue’s( though her story is heartbreaking too). I read Nordic noir, so it takes a lot for a book to leave me feeling, shall we say, unsettled, but Melanie managed to give me the creeps more than once. This was disturbing quite often and when I thought I knew where it was going, it always took a different path.
I finished this over a week ago and I’m still trying to decide how I feel about how The Nail Salon ended. I suppose that is a good thing since I can definitely say I’m still thinking about the story.
The Nail Salon is a wild ride with more twists and turns than any roller coaster and full of red herrings. It'll hook you from the beginning all the way to the jaw dropping end that will have you rereading parts to figure out how you missed it.
Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollinsUK for the ARC in return for my honest review.
Such a great read, I could not put it down and read it all in one sitting!!! Explosive, suspenseful, with great characters to keep you engaged in the story. Nothing is at it seems and it just kept getting better and better. Didn't see that ending coming. Highly recommend!
A new author for me, thank you netgalley, and a book that did not disappoint.
Fast paced with so many twists that you certainly don't see coming and an ending I didn't predict.
By day, Melanie runs a nail salon with wealthy clients who like to come and spill their worries.
By night she is trying to help teenagers who have run away from home befriending them whilst trying to burry ghosts from her past and be a good 'mother to these troubled individuals.
Anna has run away from home. She is known by some of Melanie's customers and the hint for her return is under way.
This book wraps in many characters all with personal secrets which certainly added many surprises.
A book I would recommend although does contain details of death, child and sexual abuse.
I really wanted to like this book but didn’t unfortunately. It is based around a nail salon but there only seem to be a few customers and they can shut up shop at the drop of a hat.
There’s a lot happening in this book and none of it very pleasant, it felt like the author was trying to fit as many twists into the book as possible and it just didn’t flow well.
None of the story lines felt believable, everyone was able to have police presence if they were worried and there didn’t feel like there was any depth to the characters / story. It’s just my opinion but I feel it would have been better to not try and fit as much in and put more depth into the smaller story.
Thank you to NetGalley and One more chapter for my advanced reading copy.
I thought this one was going to be a good one, but it wasn't for me.
I read like 70 pages, but I felt bored most of the time. I tried getting back to it, but it's just not working for me and that's why I did not finish it.
I absolutely loved reading this book. I was completely drawn into the topic and could not stop reading it.
This is not at all what I expected when I started as it deals with a lot of triggering subjects, homophobia, child abuse, domestic violence, substance abuse and murder just to name but a few.
Told by our two main protagonists we have Mel, owner of the nail salon who has multiple personas and the female detective and fierce policewoman who is hiding the shame of domestic violence.
There are some well written and thought out parts but there are some really gruesome descriptions and I am sure that this is not a book that everyone will enjoy.
Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
The Nail Salon wasn't what I was expecting but I thoroughly enjoyed the web of lies and interconnections. It was much darker than anticipated and there are potential triggers as there is much abuse: child abuse, domestic violence, suicide and cheating. The story is told in alternating points of view, mostly from DCI Sue Fisher and the nail salon owner Melinda (or Mel). There are plenty of twists, turns and surprises. There are a few different storylines happening which are connected. Great story.
I was grieve this by NetGalley for an honest review- a shocking thriller!
In London there is a nail salon the women love to go to for their manicure and pedicures and share their secrets. The woman doing the nails loves to rescue the innocent, and needy young- this makes her feel like their mother but why sometimes do they not appreciate her help?
And when a young girl disappears Detective Sue investigates and. what she discovers is shocking!
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC! This book was so captivating one world WOW! It was a fast paced and kept me guessing throughout a perfect book for psychological thrillers fans alike, from the very first page I drawn and couldn’t put the book down it was so good I read it in a day! The characters were likeable also.
Overall, I throughly enjoyed this book and all the plot twists that it presented!
Not for me, I love a good crime thriller but this verged on the edge of creepy and cruel. A lot more abuse details and description then required for the story.
Would advise they add trigger warnings to be honest.
This is my personal opinion only.
I went into this thinking “ohhhh, a murdery thriller” and was faced with animal abuse and cruelty from our main narrator very early on. And I guess I’ve discovered that’s a hard stop for me. So make note: trigger warning.
Did not finish.
My thanks to Net Galley Harper Collins UK and the personal invitation I received to review this excellent and unique read.
Mel Medford owns a local nail salon, but has a secret. She thinks she is a savior of troubled girls, but is a killer. Throw in sex trafficking , a pedophile, suicides, and one of the cops investigating her suffering domestic abuse, you have an engaging read.
I really liked this. My only issues were I thought the ending was a bit abrupt. A certain twist was revealed I wish was explored more. A character was thrown in at the last minute that briefly touched on it but I wanted a bit more. Still look forward to more from this author.
What a truly outstanding read... Gripped me from the first page, through the twists and right to the end..
An excellently written plot that has you standing the usual ideas in this genre on its head. I was truly blown away.
The characters are all written superbly and I was drawn in to each ones lives. They all had deep secrets that definitely throw you many curveballs.i loved this book and highly recommend. 5 stars all the way!
3.5 rounded up
If you live in or near Cobshott in leafy, wealthy Surrey then you might just pop into Melinda‘s nail salon. However, take my advice, don’t let her lend a confidential ear, just discuss whether you want a manicure, French manicure, gel nails, or acrylics. Nail art costs extra as does any loose lipped (plumped obviously) gossipy sharing.
DCI Sue Fisher has a secret it’s hard to hide when the weather is hot like right now. She has a Misper on her hands as teenager Anna Littlejohn – Eaves from Kingston, the posh end. This investigation takes Sue and her partner Mike in directions neither could foresee. The story is principally told by Melinda and Sue.
This definitely requires some suspension of disbelief as it’s fair to say there’s a lot going on in this novel, but it’s definitely entertaining and it does make some valid points. There are numerous examples of toxicity in this novel and this is done well as is the desire to control. It is inevitably disturbing in places, it goes into some very dark corners and there is intensity in the storytelling. Here, we have some seemingly perfect lives but none of us know what goes on behind closed doors. Several of the doors also contain those with delusions of grandeur amongst other things. There are plenty of twists and some of those are good ones, however, the big twist I figure out before the big reveal though luckily it doesn’t spoil any enjoyment.
I’m really glad I’ve read this, it does keep you glued to the storyline if you don’t mind a busy plot. It’s more of a mystery/detective novel in a gossiping neighbourhood tale, although that is crucial to the storyline. A shout out for the two police officers who are both extremely likeable although all the characters are well portrayed.
The cover is excellent.
Please note the publisher has listed several triggers.
With thanks to NetGalley and HarperCollins, One More Chapter, for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
If you like a twisty suburban housewife mystery, you'll enjoy The Nail Salon. The world of external perfection is eroding, and past unresolved traumas can have disastrous effects.
All of Melanie's clients have confidence in her as the proprietor of a local nail salon. She is aware of everyone's secrets. DCI Sue Fisher, despite having personal issues, looks into the case of a missing young girl. Before this case is solved, there are a lot of startling turns.
From the beginning of the novel, you know who the antagonist is. It's not necessarily a riddle you're attempting to solve. You're reading along as the investigators progressively piece together the clues and track down the murderer. It's less about who did it and more about why. The author takes their time describing each character's backstory and how it pertains to who they are today. I especially liked the comment about how everyone has been a victim at some point in their lives, and even murderers need to be treated with compassion.
Very nicely written, with a new, convincing plot and some fantastic characters. There are several surprises to keep you wondering what will happen next in the plot.
Nail-biting and unputdownable.
Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this. Sue who is a detective is trying to find a teenager whi is missing. The town she lives in looks like suburbia, but everyone seems to be hiding some secrets. This book dragged in a few places.
This book was an easy read then I got through lightening fast. There was just enough going on in the story to keep it interesting, there was some nice little twists that were a surprise when you got to them.
Wow what a psychological murder mystery this book is. Based around DCI Sue and DI Mike. They are investigating a missing 15 year old daughter of a city banker in upmarket Surrey.
This tale takes various twist and turns which you don't always see coming.
Needless to say the police eventually solve the mystery.
I really enjoyed this book.
