I first was introduced to the writing of P.J. Tracy with the Monkeewrench series. So when the Detective Margaret Nolan books started being released, I jumped right on the new series. This series has never disappointed me. Gritty, police procedurals with realistic characters. Very enjoyable! The Devil You Know is the 3rd book in the series.

The basics: Margaret is a detective in LA. Bad stuff happens every day. But it isn't every day the body of a famous actor is found only hours after a video was released that pretty much gutted his career. Was it an accident, suicide.....or murder? Another death makes it abundantly clear there is more going on here than a ruined career and a rockslide. Hollywood might glitter, but it can be dangerous.

I enjoyed this book. There were a couple scenes I thought were a bit overly melodramatic, but it's a fictional tale about Hollywood, famous actors, and the dangerous undercurrents of the entertainment industry. Of course, melodrama should be expected. Overall, another really good book in this series! I'm definitely in line to keep reading!

I started reading a digital ARC of this book before release....and then was offered a review copy of the audio book. So I started all over, and listened to the audio book. I'm all for suspenseful stories being read to me! Narrated by Abby Craden, the audio book is a bit over 7 hours long. Craden does a good job of voice acting. I'm picky about narrators, but enjoyed her performance. She reads at a nice pace and does a good job of voicing the different characters. Very entertaining!

**I voluntarily read a review copy of the ebook from St Martins Press and listened to the audio book from Dreamscape Media. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**

I definitely think this book had a ton of potential. I am also a sucker for a story about wealthy families and celebrities. My biggest gripe with this book was the amount of characters. I would get confused on who is who and that is a big pet peeve of mine in writing. Other than that, I really enjoyed it!

I cannot give this book a proper review as I have it on audio and I could not connect with the narrator doing this book. I tried twice to get into it and just was not able to focus as the narrator was pretty monotone. I hope to read this one in paperback but do not recommend it for audio.

This was an excellent book. The plot was well written, and I couldn't wait to find out who the killer was. Excellently written and the narrator did a very good job. This arc get five stars

The Devil You Know was a peek behind the curtains of glamorous yet seedy Holly wood. The story opens with one actor dead - was it an accident, suicide or murder? As more bodies pile up, we unravel the mystery further. I typically read thrillers where you have to suspend belief a bit, but I appreciated the realistic detective work and motive/conclusion in this one. Had no idea this was 3rd in the Detective Margaret Nolan series until I went to review. So you definitely can read this as a stand alone, which is nice.

Great narrator - voice felt very "film noir"-esque which suited the book perfectly.

Such a great audio! The book was fantastic and well written and had a great storyline that kept you guessing as to who done it. It wrapped up nicely at the end and had a little twist in the epiloge. Overall I was extremely pleased.

When an actor named Evan is found dead at first glance it looks like he died in a rock slide but Detective Margaret has a gut feeling that was foul play involved. He was at a party the night before and everyone who’s on the A-list was also at the party. As the suspect list grows so does the motives. I found this book interesting.org all the suspects had so much going on but it made the book a little chaotic but ultimately it was a really good mystery. I like the chemistry between Detective Margaret and her partner who unfortunately I forget his name but either way love that I would definitely recommend this book to those who like a good mystery I listen to the audiobook and thought the narrator did a pretty good job. I received this book from NetGalley and the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.

Okay I’m going to rate it midway since this was a series and I didn’t read the previous two. But with that said, I was really bored and almost DNF right at the beginning because it was just not grabbing me. It’s probably my mood. But it was kind of a chore to get through. I don’t know, maybe I should have read the first two books to enjoy this and appreciate it more.

1. I love that this is a mother daughter writing duo! How cool!
2. This is the third book in this series. While it seemed okay to read as a stand-alone; I definitely suggest reading the first two FIRST. There seemed to be a lot that I missed with the characters, especially at the beginning.

I would characterize this is a strong police procedural. There is a lot going on and a lot of characters to keep up with it - especially if you jump into the series in this book. Once you get through the first bit, the story does get a lot more interesting with the complexity of things going on.

I definitely recommend reading the first two and not jumping right into this one to get the most enjoyable experience

Thanks netgalley for the audiobook of the devil you know! I would give this book 3.5 stars. I didn’t realize this was a series and felt like I was behind right when it started trying to understand who all the characters are. It was an intriguing story and a few good twists, but there were a few characters that didn’t add anything to the story and made it a bit confusing when listening and trying to keep everyone straight. The narrator did a great job. If I had read the other books in the series first it would have been better, but I did enjoy the story and will look to find other books by this author.

Review also posted to goodreads.

3.5 glamorous stars, rounded up

The Devil You Know is a faced paced murder mystery, featuring a return of Detective Maggie Nolan. I read the first one over two years ago and missed the second in the series. Even though The Devil You Know can stand alone, it would have been helpful to have a more recent acquaintance with Maggie, friends, and not friends. Bodies add up (nothing overly graphic or sexual), so pay attention to the characters so you can follow the well-developed plot.

I particularly liked the detectives and the cyber detectives. The ending was a surprise to me – always a plus.

The outstanding narration brought the characters to life. Both male and female characters were easy to follow. Narrator Abby Craden brought out emotions in the voices as well as Hollywood haughtiness.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The Devil You Know by PJ Tracy brings back LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan after actor Evan Hobbes is found dead in Malibu. As Nolan tries to understand what really happened the body count grows and the underbelly of Hollywood becomes exposed. I will be honest and say this is my first Margaret Nolan book, but I really did enjoy it and found it to be incredibly fast paced and entertaining. Would recommend!

Thank you to Netgalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC - The Devil You Know is out now!

The devil you know by PJ Tracy is a debut novel. The orator for the book was very engaging and I felt although she had a soft voice it was commanding enough to engage the listener.

I think the book started out really captivating me second chapter lost me a little bit I think about the fourth chapter I was really getting back into the book. She had a multitude of characters in the book so I had to keep a little bit of a chart. But definitely worth a listen or read if you get the physical book. And I would highly suggest giving it a try.

A murder mystery that takes on good turns and twists. Some chapters were a little longer than others meaning some were more interesting and the other ones were. Needed to stay focus on the characters to remember who did what to whom. The length of the book was fine and the characters were good but the plot could of been a bit more intense with the relationship of the detectives. It loss my interest in the story at times.

DNF :( -- 1/5

Thank you Dreamscape Media for the advanced listening copy.

Unfortunately this one didn't work for me. I'm sure that if I had background on this story, that would be helpful. However, I found this SO CONFUSING and I had no idea what was going on in the audiobook. There were too many perspectives and too much jumping around from the beginning that I just could not keep up. I have this in paperback, too and might try again to see if this one makes more sense in a different format.

I will start by saying I didn't realize that this was the third book in a series until I had already started listening to it. As other reviewers have said, this did make it a bit difficult to get into the story with already established characters. However, the original reasons I was drawn to the book, namely Hollywood and mystery, still made it an intriguing read. I would definitely recommend reading or listening to the other books in the series first for maximum enjoyment though. That being said, it was an interesting and quickly paced mystery and I enjoyed the narration.

I’ll admit I didn’t read books one and two before this one so some of my opinions may be a reflection of that.

I gotta say this wasn’t the most fast paced thriller book I’ve ever read. It took a long time to get to the heart of this particular book (which is why I think maybe I should have read the first two before this) and there was quite a bit of behind the scenes drama. Now I was absolutely able to keep up with the story without the other books as this was a separate crime case, but the background stuff took some piecing together - and that’s on me for starting with a book three.

Overall I did like it. It was fast paced and interesting. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley for the audiobook!

I like this book but in the last 1/4 of the book I felt a bit confused and then all of a sudden the story was over w/a resolution that I didn't really see coming. I am not sure if it's b/c I jumped into the series in the middle or if I missed something. I definitely going to go back and start the series from the beginning and relisten to this one. I will be adding this author's books to my TBR!

I really tried to give this book a chance, but I couldn’t. I did not finish listening to the audiobook. I don’t think I have ever read a book so full of unnecessary words and adjectives like this one. Thank you for the advanced copy.
