From an analytical point of view, I loved Gaslight. This fast read is gripping from the first sentence and truly had me hooked! It was the first time I've ever read something that genuinely unsettled me, deep in my core, outside of a Stephen King novel, and I loved it! Vivid in its ability to draw you in and put you in the protagonists POV, by whom it is written, it was relatable in the way all the little, mundane ways of life were relayed, right from the get-go. With a cast of only about 5 characters, it keeps the mind reeling as to who could be causing such upheaval in the protagonist, Ella's, life, furthering the mystery. As the days slowly tick by, every one worse than that before it, Ella is plagued by fear and uncertainty, both in herself and those around her. Fear is compounded not only by Ella being told she isn't thinking straight, but full physical symptoms along with what we're unsure for a while if is a paranormal or tangible threat. She can't sleep, hears unsettling noises, has intense migraines and fever, finds chilling notes left for her, and the heating in the house keeps shutting off leaving her waking in a freezing condition morning after morning, all the while her partner is dismissal of her plight and belittles her for suffering.
Now to get a little ranty while keeping it spoiler-free: Dan is a d*ck. You don't dismiss your partner's very real pain, nor her fear, and you absolutely don't tell her she's being difficult or needs to get over her symptoms. You can't tell someone "you're insane", or "being impossible" and think you're in the right for that. And as much as you try to resolve things nicely in the end for readers, you also owe justice to the people who read this relating to Ella: those who have been gaslit before, and manipulated, and convinced there's something wrong with them. I think the author owed it to Ella and all those she represents to have her happy ending be one of personal fulfillment, rather than a "happily ever after" in a relationship with someone who treats her like an annoyance in his life.
As a sensitivity/ accuracy reader mostly centred around disabilities, this felt very wrong, ESPECIALLY from someone who has been in many of the situations Ella talks about throughout the book (but also having both physical and mental disabilities myself). Either Dan wants to be there for her through it all, as he claims several times through the book, or he sees her sickness as a burden - he can't have it both ways. The apologist ending where Ella defends her father and tries to forgive his blatant abuse over a couple of decades also dampened the ending for me, badly. Abuse is abuse, especially when he had two decades to fix his act and losing his wife AND child as a direct result didn't push him to try and do better, apologise, reach out, seek help, nothing. For this reason, my original projection of a 5 star rating has been lowered to a 4.
I really enjoyed reading Gaslight. It's about a woman, Ella, whose dad dies and leaves her the family house, where she was tormented as a child. Ella and her boyfriend move into the house and then things start happening to Ella. I liked how each chapter ended making me want to keep reading. I also liked the twist that I didn't see coming. I did find that after the twist, the story seemed to be a little slower. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Thank you J.E. Downey and BooksGoSocial for allowing me to read this ARC e-book. This book had fast passed mystery from the beginning and an overall mystery of who is doing the haunting. The main character, Ella, moves back to her childhood home that is filled with a majority of sadness and pain. Shortly after her arrival someone or something wants her to leave and to basically not end up in the same fate of her late mother. The story kept me guessing about who was to blame and what power the house was casting on Ella and her boyfriend but in the end the answer was not as I had imagined. I gave the book 3 stars as I felt the ending sort of fell flat and I just had so many unanswered questions throughout the story.
This book was a very quick read and I enjoyed it for what it is. I think it’s hard for a book to be fantastic in so few pages. I love a good psychological thriller but this one was a little less thriller-y than I wanted it to be. I did like the twist and I did not predict it, so bonus points for that. The characters were a little flat and the book did feel a bit repetitive up until the end. I liked the premise and I think this is the perfect length book for the plot. I think I was just waiting for something more to happen for most of the book.
Thank you to NetGalley and J.E. Rowney for an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
The main character, Ella, returns to her childhood home but begins to have doubts about her partner. Strange occurances begin and she questions her sanity.
The plot is a fast-paced one-sitting thriller. It's the textbook "is she?" or "isn't she?" read. The editing is clean and the sentence structure is short and punctuated, adding to the pace of the story.
Some readers may find the seemingly fickle nature of the emotions displayed throughout frustrating, but self-doubt is an everyday occurance. While we may internally scream in frustration at the character, we recognise ourselves in those moments.
Gaslight is an easy read, but I enjoyed it immensely and read it in one sitting. I'll certainly be looking out for the author's next book.
With special thanks to Netgalley and BooksGoSocial for a copy in return for an honest review.
It was an ok book, but there was not enough character development throughout. I thought that the ending was silly. I wish there were more characters and action in the book.
This book has a great premise, but I found it hard to follow sometimes. I felt like we were jumping all over, or from one scene to the next with no transition or context. The main character is very unlikable and annoying. I also found the ending to very rushed and quick.
Thank you to Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. I found this book enjoyable but I feel it had the potential to be much more. The book was rather short and the story felt rushed to me. I would have liked to get to know Ella and Dan a lot more. A decent psychological thriller with lots of untapped potential. 3 stars from me.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Little Red Fox Publishing for allowing me the opportunity to read and review this short psychological thriller.
Although the ending was unexpected, I felt it was a bit lacking lustre for all the hype I read about the amazing twist end. I enjoyed Ella the MC narration of the story and her scepticism of both herself, Dan, and the house.
I think some more detailed parts of her history with her parents would have elevated the story.
Overall, it was an okay short read.
I didn’t think I would enjoy Gaslight. The black and white cover didn’t thrill me and the title didn’t entice me. But, it was next on my NetGalley list so I downloaded it onto my Kindle and started to read. And then, I couldn’t stop reading. I finished Gaslight that same day. I was sucked into the storyline and I loved it.
I really enjoy the unreliable narrator POV because I feel that the twists are typically harder to foresee and that was the case with this book. I hadn’t even considered the ending and I was pleased with the execution of the final twist.
I loved the tension and suspense. I had no idea who was to blame or what was really going on and it was fabulous! It was a true page turner and I highly recommend it to anyone that likes thrillers.
And the full color cover is absolutely beautiful!!
Thank you to NetGalley and BooksGoSocial for my ARC of Gaslight in exchange for my honest review. I wanted to love this book. From the beginning the description intrigued me. However, I never felt like the book went anywhere. On amazon, it talks about how there will be a twist. I personally did not find the twist realistic and made me questioning the author since there is many holes to the story. On a positive note, I did like how it was a short read. It only took me a day or two, so it was nice to read a shorter story.
Kept my interest for sure. I just kept wondering what was real!?! Who did what?!?! I always love a book that makes you feel like you’ve been gaslighted. This one even had it in the title.
I really enjoyed the writing, the characters, just everything about this book. Highly recommend. Look forward to more from this author.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
From the title I was hooked! Right through to the end. I was never sure who was believable and who wasn't. Highly recommended.
I have enjoyed previous books by this author so was happy to be added to the arc team and get a copy of this. It was a very fast paced book from the start and I was drawn in. The MC is confident from the start that her boyfriend is gaslighting her - a term meaning making someone believe they are crazy and imagining things. Things keep happening which makes Ella question her partner. It becomes explosive at the end, but are things as they always appear?
A good psychological thriller that focuses on a young woman who moves into a house with history and ghosts with her boyfriend. It's a fun read with a stunning ending. However, I never could quite enjoy the writing style. It was forced voice and felt very uncomfortable. And it did not make up for the lack of character development.
Very tense atmospheric book. Kept the tension going to the end but would have liked a different ending. I had thought of many endings but this one although an interesting twist, did make me feel a bit let down.
this book was amazing!! i wasnt expecting that ending and it will have you in shock! this book was very descriptive and the whole time i was reading it, a movie of it was playing in my mind. thats just amazing. this was a good thriller/mystery and a very unexpted ending! if you love thrillers and mystery, this is a perfect book for you!
One line summary :
A young woman moves into her childhood house with her partner and relives the traumatic memories from her past.
The plot summary:
Ella finds out, in the beginning, she of the story that her father has died and left her Bittersweet, the house where she grew up and holds many traumatic memories from her childhood. Dan, her ‘maybe boyfriend’ insists that they should move in there together and they do. Things get weird for Ella once she returns to Bittersweet. The title of the story also shines a light on the underlying theme.
My thoughts:
The plot of the story was what I expected it would be going in and I do enjoy psychological thrillers which have a gaslighting trope. The plot was well-devised and easy to follow. Following the story from Ella’s perspective and having just one other character to focus on lets the reader fully invest into the story itself. Characters were not completely fleshed out and I ended the book feeling I would have liked to get more insights on the characters too.
The author keeps taking you in a certain direction throughout the book and the final revelation was completely unexpected for me. After the final revelation, the story goes on for a bit and I found the end to be an interesting one because it sort of leaves the interpretation upto the reader. Not the most satisfying ending but an intriguing one for sure.
My recommendation:
I enjoyed reading this psychological thriller and it kept me hooked. I read it in just two days because I kept wanting to know what was happening. Being an avid thriller reader, I like when books can keep my attention. I would recommend this book if you are looking for
- A psychological thriller with an unreliable protagonist
- Story that’s easy to breeze through with short chapters
- Single POV and only two main characters to focus on
- Enjoy a compulsive plot with mediocre character building
- Open-ended conclusion
My one issue with the story - Ella moves into her childhood home with Dan who she barely knows and they have barely dated. Seemed far-fetched and unrealistic.
I started this one with great expectations since I hadn't come across many books with Gaslighting as the central theme.
It started off good but someone didnt quiet work for me. Felt the story flattened out somewhere. It left me a bit confused frankly
A short quick read nonetheless
Thank you Netgalley and Books go social for the ARC
