This included a great compilation of debut authors!! While I enjoy the star-studded authors, it is always refreshing to read the first published book by authors as they often incorporate new concepts and fun ideas. I have requested at least a dozen books from this list, and would do more if I wasn’t so worried about all of them getting approved at once haha. Loved the diverse representation of authors as well, and I definitely requested lots of BIPOC authors on NetGalley!
Browsing publishers catalogues and getting excited for all the new releases of the season is one of my favourite things to do. Spring/Summer 2023 promises to be a good year for fiction all together, with some especially exciting (debut) releases on the horizon.
Here’s my personal top 8 from this catalogue:
- Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo
The adult-debut by beloved YA-author Acevedo is a generational story a Dominican American family, told through the eyes of three generations of its women. When the family matriarch, known for her almost supernatural ability in predicting a family-members death, gathers the family to celebrate her own “living wake”, secrets emerge and bonds are tested.
- Sisters of the Lost Nation by Nick Medina
A debut supernatural mystery in which a young Native girl's hunt for answers about the women mysteriously disappearing from her tribe's reservation lead her to delve into the myths and stories of her people, all while being haunted herself.
- The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese
Described as an epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala and following three generations of a family haunted by a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning. Multigenerational, medicine + faith, themes of water: sign me up please.
- Burst by Mary Otis
literary fiction with dynamic lyrical writing and motifs of dance, exploring a complex mother-daughter relationship. I was already intrigued by the blurb and stunning cover, but the sample drew me in with the stunning writing. This is on my close-watch list!
- The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell
Not my usual genre, but a closed-room murder-mystery set against the background of a baking competition sounds like such a wildly fun ride that I can’t wait to check this out.
- We are a Haunting by Tyriek White
Southern gothic meets magical realism in a debut about systemic racism, poverty, violence, grief, loss and more, following three generations of a black family in New York.
- The Great Reclamation by Rachel Heng
A historical epic with hints of magical realism following a boy with extraordinary gifts against the backdrop of World War II Singapore.
- Lucha of the Night Forest by Tehlor Kay Mejia
although I barely read any YA anymore, I have to keep an eye out for this one thanks to the stunning cover, the authors fantastic track-record and a story about queer love, sisterhood and Latinx mythology.
I absolutely love this opportunity to take a look at which titles will be published during this spring and summer. I am so excited for even more titles now. Thank you NetGalley, for giving this opportunity of a little sneak peak!
Good mix of new and established fiction authors together with wide ranging non-fiction. Always a help in choosing what to read in future.
Thanks for the overview! I thumbed through it and realized there's lots of interesting books getting released soon! I have saved a few of them for the future.
Thank you Publishers Lunch for allowing me to read the latest Buzz Books. I've never heard of these, but I absolutely love the idea of trying out different stories to discover more to read and enjoy. Because of that, I went and downloaded some of the older versions from last year and the romance one. I was able to find many books to anticipate this spring/summer. Some I will be entering into Netgalley to see if I can read them sooner!
I find these Buzz books very useful for finding out about upcoming books, and for weeding out some books that I thought sounded interesting - until I read a sample. Once again Buzz Books gives readers the opportunity to look ahead at book offerings from both known and unknown authors....some are a favorite and some are about to become a favorite!! The sneak peeks are sure to whet the appetite of the avid reader who will be anxiously awaiting....as am I. I love these Buzz Books. Gives you an update on what is upcoming to read and what you want to put your To Read list I have several add to my list - again. I cannot read fast enough to read all of the books I want to read There are so many new stories to read.
Last year was the first time that I was made aware of this series, and I loved it! This year is no exception, it's another great addition to the Buzz Books series. What I love is the opportunity to read a meaningful (read: lengthy enough to give an idea of the story) excerpt from a book that I might not have been exposed to otherwise. I am already looking forward to the next in this series. I can't recommend them highly enough!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read the ARC of this book. The opinions expressed herein are my own.
I found this an interesting collection with some excerpts I liked. I got a good view of the anticipated books here. I received a free copy from NetGalley.
I had no idea these books existed. A wonderful way to get a taste of what is coming. The excerpts are particularly helpful. There are so many books to read it a great to be able to read a sample. Do much easier to think “no that’s not for me’ when you only have the sample. It takes away the “but I must finish now I have started’ syndrome.
Also really pleased to see I’ve already read a few of the books in here.
Thanks to Netgallery for the ARC
So much to look forward to! From the excerpts in this ezine, my TBR list is growing exponentially. Favorites among the featured fiction titles include Family Lore by Elizabeth Acevedo (whose YA novels I've loved); All the Pretty Places by Joy Callaway (an author who's completely new to me); Birnam Wood by Eleanor Catton; Mobility by Lydia Kiesling; Homecoming by Kate Morton (which was on my list before I read this excerpt, as I've loved ALL of her previous novels); Hope by Andrew Ridker (The Hunger Banquet -- what a fascinating premise!); and of course, The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese (which I'd already requested and downloaded, and hope to get to very soon).
Among the Debut titles, the only one with real appeal for me is Homebodies by Tembe Denton Hurst, but that one I am eager to read. It will be my next request, once I clear my shelf of the multiple titles already waiting there. A History of Burning by Janika Oza also shows promise.
Thanks for an enticing glimpse of the books to come!

I enjoy learning about all the books being published. Just adds to my never ending TBR! Thank you for this wonderful compilation! So many books so little time!
Buzz Books did it again with another collection to get me hyped for future releases.
I always go into these collections with an open mind and I walk away with a brand-new TBR.
I so appreciate Goodreads Publishers for compiling and reviewing so many new books for the Spring/Summer 2023. Thank you! Sounds like several good books coming soon!
Absolutely wonderful sample.
I was excited about several books from this sample and now I'm even more!
this is a perfect resource for people who are looking for books to read or purchase. I love that the cover is there, a visual representation of the book and makes it easy to spot if you are looking in a library for bookstore for it. The summary is very helpful and the excerpt is a great help in getting a feel for the book. The author information is also a great touch.
