This is the follow up to Into the Mist. I wasn't sure what to expect. The book was good..not as good as the Out of the Mist but it was a decent follow up.
While I love PC Cast's books, the issue I always have with her books is the writing style. Some of the dialog seems the same over and over again. Characters seem to always repeat words and phrases. I had the same issue with The House of Night books as well.
Embrace the captivating saga of Into The Mist and brace yourself for the exhilarating journey that awaits in Out Of The Dawn. To truly grasp the intricacies of this gripping narrative, immersing yourself in the depths of Into The Mist is an absolute prerequisite. Understanding the characters, their perilous situation, and the unfolding events demands a foundation laid by the first book.
The relentless battle against the mist persists. Its ever-changing nature continues to wield profound influence, bestowing extraordinary powers upon some women while striking fear into the hearts of others. Remarkably, the mist's eerie impact extends to a few courageous men, a rarity given its lethal reputation. This pivotal shift dramatically alters the trajectory of the tale, thrusting our protagonists into uncharted territory.
Marvel at the awe-inspiring world meticulously crafted by PC Cast. Witness the sheer determination of these women as they construct their homes from the raw elements of mud and clay. They have metamorphosed into a resilient tribe, fashioning a new reality amidst adversity. Their profound connection to the earth and their reverence for it are profoundly moving. Their survival is not just a desire but a necessity, a testament to their unwavering spirit.
It covered various themes that were touched with delicacy but importance, and I liked watching the characters evolve and grow together. Although I liked the magic system, I didn't quite understand it and I still have the uncertainty of where the mist came from and what was its purpose. However, I still enjoyed the nail-biting suspense and the sisterhood of these characters.
I will always be a fan of Cast and her novels. I was super excited to dive back into this dystopian tale and find out what was going to happen with the 'Core Four". I loved how much this one tied back to pagan views and the tie between nature and people. This one was a little more on the man hating track than i would have liked but the subject nature and seriousness of the content made it necessary in the end. I loved that ford returned, he was definitely one of my favorite characters from book one and i love the connection between him and mercury. I will gladly be returning to this story and eager to see what will happen with Mercury and the core four!
this is how a series is meant to be written, from the beginning you are on the edge of you seat and the characters just grow from strength to strength in the dystopia story, the way the author writes has you begging for more when you get to the last page of the book and you end up upset with yourself for finishing it too quickly
an author who has made they way on to my auto buy list now and other authors need to be scared of

Out of the Dawn is the sequel in the “Into the Mist” post-apocalyptic series by PC Cast. I was fortunate enough to have been provided an arc for the first one through NetGalley and for this second book I received both a digital NetGalley arc as well as a physical copy from #crookedlanebooks
Out of the Dawn starts immediately following the ending of the first instalment. Mercury Rhodes and her teacher friends work to navigate this new world created by the elusive green mist. While the green mist was deadly to men, it heightened and strengthened natural abilities in women.
With these new abilities and a new place to call home, Mercury and her friends begin to settle in and work towards building a better, stronger world for the survivors. Tapping into their new abilities though, uncovers that peace is not as easy as it seems and there are predators out there looking to destroy Mercury and her friends.
Does Mercury and her group have enough strength and guidance to persevere in this strange new world? What else is lurking under the mist that they might need to face?
I enjoyed this second book better than the first! I was unsure of the characters and the story itself but curious enough to read the sequel and I’m so glad I did. This book really detailed each of the women’s new abilities and how they would contribute moving forward. The flow of this book was more smooth and I was dragged right into the plot. This is a 4 star read for me! Thanks to NetGalley, the publishers and author for an advanced copy of this book!

A thrilling sequel to Into the Mist, Out of the Dawn picks up where book one left off. Mercury Rhodes and her friends are just trying to survive in this new world. The green mist has changed all the women into something more. And they're not the only ones...
This second novel wraps up this duology nicely. I know this is touted as a sequel but I doubt there will be any more books in this series. Thrills and loads of magic and mystical happenings abound in this dystopia. But that is definitely something to expect and look forward to in a P.C. Cast novel.
*Special thanks to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for this e-arc.*
I love P.C. Cast. The first book in this series was a bit of a let down for me. This book I enjoyed more. I don’t know that I would go out and say it was a lot better then the first book, but I enjoyed characters more. I felt like I got to know them a bit more. I enjoyed that there was not as much running around in this book, and less focus on the mist, though it still plays a huge role in this book. I enjoyed seeing how the mist changed others not just the woman. I feel like the original four were able to come more into themselves in this new world, in a good way. I did find it interesting that Karen kind of faded away in the background in this book, since she played such a huge role in the last book. I was glad to see her embracing things a bit more though. Overall, this book just held my attention more. I am interested to see if there will be more in this series. I think the new world will be exciting to explore further especially with how this book ends.
Thank you to Crooked Lane Books and Netgalley for allowing me to read an advance copy of this book.
Mercury has to pull herself together after Ford's death in order to build a community for the rest of their family. They face challenges along the way as they gather supplies from nearby towns and more people join them. Evil is growing, and what is dead may not stay that way.
The green mist may have killed the men who breathed it in, but it also gave powers to some of the women. Everyone’s abilities are different. Some can heal, others grow plants, and some have great physical strength. Mercury and a small group of survivors begin to create a small community where they can start over. Their group may want to live well with the earth, but other survivors have harsher plans. What threat will this group face next? Will the world survive this next stage of human existence?
Out of the Dawn is the second book in the Into the Mist series. The events of this book transpire soon after book one and even though it had been some time since I read the first volume, I easily remembered the key events as new plot points were uncovered. Goodreads does not have the third book listed (yet), but the ending of this novel is not the end of the series. Major events are wrapped up but there are many things still to be settled.
Wow!! I really loved Into the Mist and was anxiously awaiting Out of the Dawn, so I was thrilled to be approved to read it on NetGalley. I was not disappointed.
This was a great sequel / continuation of the post-apocalyptic story of the four teachers and their found family, building a new settlement in the Painted Hills in Oregon after the world as they knew it ended with bombs dropping and a green mist still lying in wait in low spots.
Some of Mercury and Stella's worst enemies may not be as dead as previously thought, and Mercury keeps having very strange dreams of Ford, as if he's right there, when they buried him at the end of Into the Mist.
Teenagers do teenager-stupid things, and there is swift justice when it is necessary, and they learn how to live in a new way without violence and in harmony with the earth. While Into the Mist ended with a lot of grief, Out of the Dawn ties up everything in a little bow--no cliffhangers here, although I suppose there's always the possibility if Cast wants to continue writing this world.
Overall, I think the book was enjoyable and give it a 3 star rating. I loved the idea of the dystopian world connecting to Pagan gods. I was a little confused at the beginning especially with how the last book finished. I read the arc of the first one as well and I thought it ending a different way then how this book began with the character Ford. I loved all the characters in this book. I do think the plot was rushed at the end. Mercury is a great character. I love her friendships with the other women.
I give it three stars because I enjoyed it, but I don't think I would read it again. The writing also dropped it for me. I don't think it was necessary for the constant repeating of the same thing from each member of the group. There was some plot points that I also thought were unnecessary to the main plot.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes dystopian mixed with magic and loves girl power. There is a triggering sub plot that you have to look out for but I feel as if it is predictable when it happens. Doesn't make it less hard to read for those who have dealt with that.
This is also posted on my Goodreads.
I didn't realize this was a sequel before I started reading, so I'm going to stop, and go get the first. I LOVE PC Cast however, and have no issue giving it 5 stars!
I received this advanced reader copy and exchange for a fair review from NetGalley. This novel was incredibly fun and a great sequel to Into The Mist! It may not be everybody's cup of tea, and admittedly there could be a need for Amy suspension of disbelief to enjoy some of the more fantastical elements in the story. But overall I enjoy this novel greatly! I highly recommend it to any readers of Into The Mist, as well as any other similar apocalyptic stories with strong female characters. I think the interweaving of pagan beliefs & natural elements makes a great deal of sense in the overall scope of the story.
A fantastic sequel from a wonderful author. Must read the first one before this (I highly recommend the first one, Into The Mist, as well). I am a huge fan of this author and all her various works, and I loved the so much about this unique and exciting story. An apocalypse which brings with it female empowerment plus magical and natural abilities... absolutely my jam. I still have so many questions, but I loved how this ended. Also, secretly hoping this isn't the end of the series even though it felt that way at the end of this book. I adore the character development that happened throughout both books, especially this one.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for the opportunity to read this ARC. I've already pre-ordered this one, as I have a feeling I will want to revisit this new world again.
P C Cast is a genius at keeping readers glued to her work and Out of the Dawn is no exception to that! This book is a sequel to Into the Mist so it is helpful to read that one first. You won't regret reading either of them.
If you enjoy reading fantasy books, you will really enjoy these books. I will whet your appetite.
Into the Mist sets the stage with a strange war-like bombing which unleashes a green mist that kills most men instantly and turns them into jelly. Women are also affected, some die and some are changed in ways that give them powers they may have had previously, but enhances them. For example, if you are a healer, you may be able to heal without medicine. Some women discover their blood grows plants very quickly which is very handy when there is an apocalypse afoot. Where does this mist come from?
Out of the Dawn takes the story further and gives readers some hints as to the nature of the green mist. I feel another sequel in the future because we still don't know what the mist is or where is comes from. I will certainly be reading the next installment when and if it appears.
This sequel is SO good! If you've ever imagined what it would be like if the world were turned upside down and things changed dramatically, this is the book for you.
I was given an eARC by the publisher through NetGalley.
I honestly expected a bit more from this book. It left me feeling like the next shoe was about to drop and it just never did.
Let me start out by saying that I love PC Cast and I have followed from the House of Night series. This adult dystopian book has my heart in a chokehold. I loved reading it and cannot wait to give it to our patrons!
