I was first drawn to this book by the gorgeous cover! I was happy to see the gorgeous artwork continued throughout. Mountain Magic is a beautiful and detailed guide to exploring old-time witchcraft in the Appalachian mountains. Ms. Beyer seems to have a lot of knowledge in this area. There are magical uses as well as practical uses for herbs found in the area. I'm not sure how useful the book would be if the reader didn't live near that part of America. It would be a nice little plant reference but there are certainly better choices for more comprehensive information.

Mountain Magic: Volume One is filled with much knowledge drawn from European, Native American, and African American folk magic. I love the illustrated guide and the ease of reading and following the book.

This book covers so much witchyness. Starting with different types of witches, herbs, etc. I loved it. I found it very informative and right up my alley. Appalachian folklore is a new topic of interest for me and I thought this was a great starting book. Very well researched.

Thanks to NetGalley for my review copy. This book explores the secrets of old-time witchcraft in the Appalachian region. I have always had an interest in different religions and points of view, but never realized that a religion varied by region as well. Reading from not only an expert witch but one who is also a forager who shares her knowledge and experience of the diverse and rich magical traditions of the people who live in the hills and hollows was fascinating. There are so many things I want to look more into, and I wonder how much corresponds to other regions or how it can be adapted for non-mountain areas. The book is also beautifully illustrated with drawings of plants, charms, and symbols that capture the essence of the mountain magic and makes everything easier to grasp and more real. The book covers various topics such as the types of Appalachian witches, the medicinal and occult uses of herbs, the charms and curses that are part of the folk magic, and the seasonal lore and astrology that guide the life of the mountain people. The book also includes recipes, anecdotes, and historical facts that make the reading enjoyable and informative. The book also shows how the culture has been influenced by other cultures and versions of folk magic, and how it has adapted. As with others on similar topics, this book has inspired me to connect more with nature and to discover the magic that surrounds me. It also makes me want to pay more attention to the nuances of change around me. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more about the history and practice of witchcraft in Appalachia, has an interest in witchcraft in general, or who enjoys learning about other cultures and belief.

I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.

Mountain Magic is a beautiful and detailed guide to exploring old-time witchcraft. I loved how informative this book was without being overwhelming at the same time. Appalachia is so interesting, and I've loved exploring it through this book. There's a wealth of information about plants, vegetables, and herbs, and I enjoyed that there were interactive activities with the book, too. The illustrations are just beautiful and add a tough of magic to the pages! I definitely recommend this to anyone who loves plants and the outdoors even if you don't believe in witchcraft as it's a stunning book to have and very informative.

If you are interested in Appalachian folklore, herbal magic, pick this one up! Rebecca Beyer focuses on the old ways of Appalachian practitioners and includes the traditional herbs they used in their practices. The writing style is concise and almost like an easy-to-read encyclopedia. The artwork is stunning.

I definitely recommend this book.

I’m obsessed with the cover and obviously the book as well. I can’t help reading all the magical books out there, this one was exceptionally good though. So much fun and easy to understand.

"These are the flavors of a place. Each iron nail, each herb, they all tell a story about the way that magic was born."

This is one of the most interesting nonfiction books I've read in a long time. While I don't have much knowledge of herbs and tonics, I'm a big fan of nature and all its hidden abilities and it was fun to learn about the mythology behind plants, animals, seasons and moon phases. The author even included detailed recipes for brewing healing tea with wild herbs and how to make charms for protection. What I found very sympathetic was how she also tried to stay true to the "magical" elements by referencing their African, Persian, European or Appalachian origin.

What made the book even more enjoyable was the beautiful illustrations of every new theme. The art work is delicate and serene and the overall aesthetics of this book is quite feminine and charming.

I enjoyed this book and I would recommend it to others. This book is a great follow-up to Beyer's previous title Wild Witchcraft. If you enjoyed that book you are sure to enjoy this one and vice versa.

I have not spent much time in Appalachia but my family comes from Appalachia. It was fun and interesting to read about the beliefs of the area and to see some of the things my grandparents told me listed in the text.
I have never been able to predict the weather via caterpillar but I had a great time reading about it.

Great book, I will be looking forward to future titles from Beyer.
