Going into this collection of essays, I was unfamiliar with Tara Thorne, a long-time, Halifax-based arts journalist, who was fired from CBC Radio in 2020 for a tweet about then NS premier's son. This book picks up after that and includes a range of essays including deep dives into formative pop culture such as Tori Amos, Thelma & Louise, and The Gilmore Girls. Other essays describe her current creative projects as a musician and filmmaker. There are also essays about more topical issues such as the #metoo movement, gay representation in Hollywood, and, of course, her own account of the end of her career as a freelancer with CBC Radio. Thorne's voice is funny, smart, and caustic. I found the introduction's take-no-prisoner's tone a bit unsettling, but eventually, either I relaxed or she did, and I started to enjoy her insights and observations. I have no doubt that Thorne was treated poorly by CBC, and that mistreatment didn't begin with tweeting about a politician's son. Overall, I enjoyed this collection of wide-ranging essays with an east coast slant by a "recovering journalist." Thanks to Nimbus Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC.
