This was another great read in this new spin-off series by Karen white. If you’ve read her Tradd street series then this series is a must. This was book two and it stepped right back into Nola’s world with a new mystery and great side characters. I loved the new mystery, with both living and dead suspects and appreciated the challenges Nola faced. It was a great read!
Short synopsis: Nola senses some spirits lingering in her recently purchased home in New Orleans, working with Beau they must figure out where his sister went and why the spirits are lingering.
My thoughts: What a great setting! This was deeply atmospheric, I felt almost as if i was walking the streets and tasting the Creole food alone with the characters. I love haunted houses, and set in the Deep South of New Orleans just was utter perfection!
I didn’t read the first one in the series, honestly I hadn’t realized this was part of a series when I started. I felt like it would have been very helpful to have the first portion of this tale to really understand the characters and their past.
This was much more character driven than I was expecting. I thought based on the synopsis we’d get more plot, but for the most part it worked for me!
Read if you love:
- Home renovation projects
- New Orleans settings
- Character driven stories
- Haunted houses
- Missing persons element
I really enjoyed the first book of the series and this one was a great follow-up. The author does a great job of painting a picture of the city, the houses and the characters. Fun and quirky supernatural mystery! Thank you for the ARC!
The House on Prytania is the second book in the Royal Street series. Nola Trenholm moved to New Orleans for a fresh start. Her new home is a fixer upper with a few spirits hanging around. The spirits may help solve a mystery Nola is involved in with her friend Beau.
The House on Prytania can be read as a standalone, but I recommend starting with the first book in this series, The Shop on Royal Street. Fun characters, a charming setting, and intriguing stories make this an enjoyable series.
An atmospheric mystery with paranormal elements and a hint of romance. Recommended to fans of Southern fiction and light paranormal mysteries.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I've enjoyed all of Karen White's Tradd Street series with Melanie and Jack along with Nola's spin-off The Shop on Royal Street so I knew I'd love The House on Prytania as well. Even though it's similar to the others, it was still a fun read and I couldn't pass it up. If you haven't read the other books in this series, I suggest you at least start with The Shop on Royal Street just so you know what's going on. Lots of great side characters including Jolene. I also listened to the audio of this so it was fun to hear all the southern accents too!
Fun bit of romance with paranormal goings on. All in all I found this to be a perfect read for October!
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

I loved the first book #TheShopOnRoyalStreet! It was full of mystery, witty banter, charming friends, second chances, New Orleans history.... and ghosts. Nola was a relatable, real and flawed character who you just can't help but love and root for! I have always wanted to visit new Orleans, but I have not had the pleasure of doing so yet, so I loved hearing about all of the old stories, characters and the history.
You definitely don't want to miss the second novel, #TheHouseOnPrytania, because it is just as good!! And it is OUT NOW 😌 #RoyalStreet is a spin-off of Karen White's previous series #TraddStreet. I have not read any of the previous books, but I had no problem keeping up with this new series! I love all the characters in these books. 🩷
Karen White writes such atmospheric books, so descriptive they literally transport you to any locale. This book is no different and was a great follow up in the series! I am so glad I discovered this author
Book 2 in the Royal Street series. Ghosts, a mystery and a cottage in New Orleans creates all the spooky vibes in this one. This book had me longing for a front porch, some beignets and an iced tea. If you like a southern mystery this one is for you!
Huge thank you to @berkleypub @prhaudio and @netgalley for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

The Shop On Royal Street, the first book in the Royal Street series was a five star read for me, so when the opportunity to read book two, I immediately jumped at the chance to visit Nola Trenholm once again. This book is the perfect combination of romance, mystery, southern and historic charm, a great cast of characters, and the right amount of ghoulish presence.
Such a wonderful spin off series. Do check these out!
As I started to read this engaging book, Nola welcomed me to NOLA, a city which definitely suits her. As she rehabs and preserves vintage homes, she meets many folks, those who are alive and many in spirit form. Some of these folks were busy trying to solve mysteries and uncover secrets, while others were working just as hard at keeping their evil deeds under wraps.
I loved Nola’s quirky bunch of relatives, friends, admirers and coworkers! They were so much fun to get to know. This book was filled with mystery, suspense, family dysfunction, romantic tension, unlikely alliances, southern hospitality and southern humor. It is also filled with some rather communicative ghosts…
I loved the friendship between Nola and Jolene! They couldn’t possibly be any more different and yet were the perfect friends for each other. I loved Jolene’s southern hospitality and her sense of humor. Her dialogue alone provided many laugh out loud moments for me.
I encourage you to pick up a copy of this book and enjoy some storytelling fun!
I received complimentary copies of this book from Berkley Publishers through UpLit Reads and NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Very much enjoyable, I love Jolene- she’s a great side character. It’s just a little dragged out and needed more Melanie! Karen never disappoints though! I only wish we didn't have so long to wait for book #3
I am so excited to be part of the book tour with @UpLitReads and @KarenWhiteAuthor sharing newly released The House On Prytania! Karen White has been a favorite author of many with her best selling Tradd Street series, but my favorites were The Sound of Glass and The The Night The Lights Went Out. I think this book, the second in The Royal Street series, is the best of both. Karen White brings the mystery, drama, a little paranormal, and characters with depth and connection in a setting rich in history. To please so many of us that become invested it’s a series!
This is the story of Nola Trenholm who is searching for help with and answers about her home in New Orleans. It’s quite clear that there’s an energy there. This is a story of long buried secrets, of what we do to protect those we love. Is it possible that extends beyond this life, or is that just us trying to work out unfinished business? What Nola does know is there’s much she can’t explain, much that doesn’t add up, and she’s in over her head. Is it worth putting her heart at risk to find answers?
I loved the mystery aspect of this story, the way White really uses New Orleans as its own character. It’s atmospheric and I was immediately drawn in. I’m a huge fan of magical realism, and this definitely has a darker feel being paranormal. While this can be read as a stand alone I do think it helps to have read the first book, The Shop on Royal Street. If you’d like to catch up the audiobook is a fantastic way to do this, and I can personally state it’s great as I did a hybrid read last year and loved it.
Thank you so much to @UpLitReads , @KarenWhiteWrite , and @BerkleyPub for the beautiful hardcover copy in advance of publication for review! I recommend for lovers of mystery, southern gothic, and ghost stories.
I love Karen White’s books and how she blends the historical with the paranormal.
Here she makes you feel like you are there in historic New Orleans. With exciting characters (both alive and dead), mystery, and even romance, you will be charmed by this ghost story.
Thank you @uplitreads @Berkleypub and @karenwhitewrite for a spot on tour and a gifted book.
I have read Karen White for a long time and this series with Nola as the main character has become my favorite series written by her. The New Orleans setting is great, but the house is wonderful! I love the haunting, the ghosts all have personalities that make them more than ghosts, they are characters that make a difference in the story. Of course, Nola and Beau are the perfect non-couple to solve the mysteries.
The story is full of the history of New Orleans, which I love since I could picture the houses and the other settings. I loved that Karen White took us on a tour of a cemetery, talked about Bourbon Street, and other well-known landmarks.
Nola and Beau, could there be a non-couple that belongs together more? They are circling each other, working hard to non-flirting with each other, and keeping secrets from each other. Nola just wants to keep Beau from getting killed or hurt by a powerful family, so she decides to do what she can to figure out the secret of Sunny’s kidnapping. I liked the mystery of Sunny, the figuring out what had happened to her, but for me there was no big surprise at the end.
This is a great addition to the series, and I love that it can be read as a stand-alone. I recommend this entire series.
Thank you Berkley for a copy of the book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
This was a different and interesting read. I loved how Nola totally accepted the spirits around them. Trying to get others to listen was a challenge. The story behind everything kept me reading and wanting to know the truth along with Nola. There were a couple parts that dragged a bit, but overall, this was a story worth reading.
Nola senses when ghost are near and her new house seems to be loaded with them. This is book 2 in the Royal street series. Her contractor and boyfriend, Ryan knows they are there, one is his grandfather. This book can be read as a stand alone story but the thread from book 1 is the return of Sunny, Ryan’s sister who was kidnapped many years ago. Set in New Orleans where the ghosts are prolific this is a good read. There is just enough truth that it makes you hope that ghost could be real. hope there is a book 3 in the near future.
Great family store with the added bonus of a haunting!
I love New Orleans and every time I am in the Garden District I imagine that all the big grand houses having ghosts roaming their halls.
Love the characters but especially loved the authors descriptions of the area. Not only could I see the sights as I read I could smell the oleanders that lined the iron fences and hear the clacking of the street cars.
The House on Prytania is a cozy paranormal mystery blended with a little romance and family drama. Unfortunately, before reading I didn't know that it's also book 2 in Karen White's Royal Street series (and a spin-off from the Tradd Street series), and I never read book 1 or the other series. I think reading those books would have helped me understand this story a little more.
What I liked:
The paranormal mystery was intriguing, and I enjoyed the ways different characters felt or engaged with the otherworldly beings.
Beau's mother and grandfather's ghosts were a perfect balance against the creepier ghosts.
New Orleans is steeped in history and a beautiful setting for paranormal shenanigans.
Side characters like Nola's roomie Jolene are great. I loved her mother and sister as well. Their dog Mardi is adorable too!
What I didn't care for:
In spite of definite chemistry between Nola and Beau, I didn't really care for their relationship. Lots of miscommunication and refusal to acknowledge their feelings. Apparently, this is an ongoing storyline.
The mystery of Beau's sister Sunny's sudden reappearance was somewhat predictable and unfulfilling.
Slow pacing, which I normally enjoy, seemed a bit too slow and repetitive.
The ending left me unsatisfied knowing that more is to come in book 3. I'm not sure I'll pick it up.
If you've read and loved White's other books, I think this will be a win for you. If you haven't read them, I'd encourage you to start at the beginning to see if this series and these characters are for you.
There's a lot going on in this book. All of it interesting.
I didn't read The Shop On Royal Street. While I wasn't lost in this book, many times I wished I knew the backstory. I still enjoyed the book, especially the characters. Nola is an odd dichotomy. She's pretty brave in the face of paranormal risks and her career but she's terrified of driving. She's got great relationships with her family, her ex=boyfriend and Beau. I really loved her relationship with her step-mother.
There's a lot going on in the story and it takes the course of the book to figure most of it out. Which I appreciated as a reader. The paranormal aspects were especially interesting. What, or who, is behind a previous attack on Nola, her current house haunting and so many other instances? How do you fight what you can't understand or even really see? With their various skills her friends and family all provide different pieces until Nola finally can puts everything together.
I really enjoyed the intrigue. I also found the love triangle interesting even though I could tell no resolution was going to be had this quickly. That problem will take a while to resolve.
My first book by White proved to be an entertaining read. I recommend it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC.
