How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent is a wickedly clever and darkly humorous novel that will captivate readers who enjoy complex female protagonists, feminist themes, and twisted takes on friendship, love, and the complexities of female rage, making it a perfect fit for fans of sharp, unapologetic, and unflinching stories about women who refuse to be silenced.
This one was not my favorite - the cover makes it seem like it may have been lighthearted like Finlay Donovan but it was not. Maybe that was not a fair comparison but was not my fave regardless.
This was such a a cute cozy. I really enjoyed reading about the odd characters in this sweet little town. I thought the plot was mysterious and clever. It's a very entertaining story.
This was easily the best mystery-thriller I read in the past year and I suspect it will be a top read of 2024 for many! I have already planned to read, The Murder After the Night Before. I hope the author continues with this combo of humour, mystery and thriller because it makes for an absolute top notch storytelling.
In a non-creepy way I was drawn to this book because of the title. But then I started thinking about all the books about how to murder I have on my kindle and had second thoughts about downloading it, looks a little suspicious!
My first thoughts about this book was it was a pretty easy read, but even as a fan of true crime/serial killers it was a bit too murder-y for me. Kitty Collins just be killing men left and right. And getting away with it? No chance she wasn’t even that sneaky about it! After the third murder I was kind of over it. I get the whole vigilante thing, but it was too much. And she was kind of psycho. Kind of have to be to murder a bunch of men.
The twist at the end I didn’t see coming, so that was something! I don’t think I’m tripping over myself to recommend this book. It wasn’t bad by any means! If you’re looking for a quick read with kind of a different spin, you might like it! In my professional opinion it was a perfectly fine book but I’m probably never thinking about it ever again.
I love the cover and it was what first grabbed my attention to pick up this book. The second was the story about an influencer vigilante killer. I mean come on!
I was definitely surprised by this story as I didn’t expect it to be as fun, clever and humorous as it turned out. It is a quick and easy read that left me wanting more. I can’t wait to see what this author comes out with next.
I want to thank NetGalley, Katy Brent and Harper 360 for the e-ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are honest, my own and left voluntarily.
3.5 rounded up
Basically if Aileen Wuornos were in her 30s today & filthy rich.
This book could have been better. There were a lot of amateur mistakes with the murders. If you’re going to do something, do it right.
Thank you Net Galley & to the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a darkly entertaining book! Kitty Collins, old money Instagram influencer, happens to (whoopsie) kill men she happens to encounter who deserve it. She is like a female Dexter. Her murders are a sidepiece to the storyline of Kitty and her wealthy friends' lifestyles and relationships. A bizarrely flippant but enjoyable tale of a vengeful serial killer.
Great premise of a female murderer, hunting down the bad guys. If you loved the show Dexter, this is right up your alley. The novel was dark but also had humor which I appreciate.
This was definitely a different book. I don't think I've read this author before. It wasn't a thriller but did have an "oh no" feeling to it. A few funny parts. I would try a book from the author again. Thanks NetGalley for ARC.
This was an easy read, and was an overall enjoyable experience. Kitty is one of those characters that you both love and hate in equal measure - I found myself both rooting for her to get away with all her misdeeds, and hoping that she'd get some sort of comeuppance. It's hard to believe that in today's over-surveilled society, anyone could actually get away with all those murders, but who really knows? This is certainly a worthy read from an author I will be actively keeping an eye on in the future.
Kitty Collins is a rich influencer who has a gruesome side hobby. It all started with a guy at the nightclub who wouldn’t leave her alone. Then the killing became an addiction. Soon, she’s seeking out stories of women and their attackers–and going after the attackers.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but with the cartoonish cover and funny title, I definitely wasn’t anticipating what I got. This is a dark and gruesome book–some of the scenes are pretty disturbing. Kitty somehow managed to keep getting away with murder, despite her general sloppiness (how did she keep cleaning up the blood and not leaving a trace??) and the digital trails that would lead police directly to her. I guess it’s assumed that a rich, beautiful, white woman wouldn’t be a suspect. Despite the plot holes, I was hooked enough to keep reading. Just know that this is not a read-alike for the much lighter humorous thrillers Finlay Donovan or Killers of a Certain Age.
Thank you to.l NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
Great book of dark humor. Entertaining and interesting read.
Killing Eve meets Dexter in this novel filled with dark humor. Kitty, our protagonist, is a social media influencer. Bored with her superficial life, Kitty looks for ways to bring excitement into her days, and boy does she find it (through killing men who may or may not deserve it). From its morally gray characters and its attention-grabbing plot, I absolutely adored this story.
This book is brilliant! American Psycho meets Bridget Jones’ Diary x SATC….unbelievably witty and unique. One of my faves for the year!
I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this, at first I didn't really enjoy it and found some of the lines somewhat cringeworthy, but around halfway through I started enjoying it a lot more and couldn't stop reading.
This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it!
Thank you NetGalley and Harper 360 for granting me this ARC.
I was really excited for this novel. The premise I thought was captivating. It was a dud. It was off puting feom the start with the social media influencer who hates it 🙄. There were so many plot holes that were very hard to look over in order to enjoy the novel. There was an attempt at growth but it just wasn't there. Charlie was the only redeemable trait however it gave 'I need a man to fix me' vibes. I wanted to like this for what it was but I couldn't.
How to Kill Men and Get Away With It by Katy Brent is a gripping book that kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The story follows Kitty Collins, a complex character who is a friend, lover, and killer. The way the author portrays the protagonist's addiction to revenge is both chilling and fascinating.
The plot is well-crafted, with unexpected twists and turns that kept me guessing until the very end. The writing style is engaging and descriptive, making it easy to picture the scenes in my mind.
Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a thrilling and suspenseful read. Katy Brent is a talented author who knows how to keep her readers hooked from beginning to end.
4 stars!
"How to Kill Men and Get Away With It" by Katy Brent is a biting, twisty, turny, murderous dark comedy with a fantastic commentary. This book is a fast-paced trip and one heck of a wild ride, vigilante $h1t. It's obvious to me why so many people don't like this book: they can't imagine a woman being a serial killer and ostensibly enjoying it. There is a meme online that says, "I support women's rights, but I also support women's wrongs, too," and that's exactly how I feel about this novel. This book is great. The main character, Kitty, is devilishly hilarious with her quippy inner monologues, her vapid friends, her blasé attitude, and her penchant for justice via chopping up m3n who have wronged others. I do think that a little mystique gets lost the longer this book goes on. It drags a bit in the last half. As the book goes on, Kitty feels progressively more and more guilty about her favorite pasttime. I enjoyed the twists I never saw coming. I found this to be a fun, fast, enjoyably different read. I laughed a lot and was shocked a lot at this devious, twisted thriller.
Thank you to NetGalley, Katy Brent, Harper 360, and HQ Digital for the complimentary ARC of this book. All opinions are my own. I was not compensated for my review.
