In this conclusion to the PEI Shores series, we follow the youngest Ross brother as he comes to terms with the past and his future. Both he and our leading lady, Kelsey, have struggled through hurts of their pasts, hurts handed down by the people who should have loved them most, and they finally work together to heal each other. We get to catch up with the other two brothers as well, and see how their stories are playing out. A satisfying ending to the trilogy.
When I saw that Summer in the Spotlight by Liz Johnson was set on Prince Edward Island, I knew I had to read it. To my surprise, she has another series set there too and now added to my TBR list.
After a surprise hurricane the small community works together to rebuild their theater. I enjoyed the story. It was great to see how everyone worked together and new relationships were formed.
I also loved the cover, it’s like a watercolor landscape and makes me want to visit there.
Now, to dig in to the other books in the series.
4.5 stars
This was a really sweet book and a great conclusion to this series. Anne of Green Gables started my interest in PEI but Liz Johnson's books have stoked the flames!
My heart just went out to Levi. I wanted to wrap him up in a hug! I mean, Kelsey did that plenty, but I wanted to love on him as though he was a little boy, because really, he was. He had never gotten over some major hurt from his childhood and it was smothering him.
One of my favorite things from this book was Levi and Dustin. It just showcased Levi's heart of gold. Even though he hardly speaks, Levi is a defender and supporter and it was shown over and over in how he came through for Dustin and Kelsey, and even before, with what he did for Eli.
Kelsey... I also hurt for Kelsey. Both Levi and Kelsey were wounded by people who should have loved them and their actions as adults comes out of that unhealed hurt. What is interesting is that the other people who stepped in for them in their younger years didn't fix the problem. I liked how they helped each other heal.
I finished the book with a contented sigh. This is the perfect summer read.
This was a very good book on how everyone worked together to bring a theater back to life through running q benefit. It shows if you. Work hard on something things will happen. /his book was approved by netgalley and the publisher for me to read and review.
Summer in the Spotlight is the third and final book in the series and is an absolute delight! This book focuses on the youngest Ross brother, Levi. His character has always been extremely intriguing as he chooses to hardly ever speak but is a pillar of strength for Mama Potts and his brothers. His story is expertly told in this story as well as giving more glimpses into the family and their past.
I have loved this series and Levi’s story did not disappoint! This story is filled with heartache, grief, strength, resiliency, and love. It captured me from the very beginning and was difficult to put down. I was definitely sad to see this series end. It is a must read!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are completely my own.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first two Prince Edward Island Shores books, so have been eagerly awaiting this last one in the series. Johnson does not disappoint. The emotional and romantic tension in Levi and Kelsey’s relationship is done just right. You may need to have some tissues handy as you encounter the various plot twists. It’s fun to catch up with the other family members from the first two books, and meet some new friends too. There are great insights into things like love is a choice, not something you have to earn, the influence words spoken to young teens can have – both positive and negative ones, and the difference encouragement makes to people of all ages. I highly recommend this whole series.

The meteorologist is usually wrong so when a hurricane was predicted, Levi, the Facilities Director, was at the high school to fill in for a janitor who stayed home because of the possible hurricane. Kelsey, a teacher, also ignored the warming until she heard the downpour, and it was suddenly dark outside. When a tree came crashing into her classroom, right through the window and trapped her under it, she then admitted the weather girls was right. Eventually Levi found her and managed to get her out from under the tree, and even took the glass out of her shoulder. She felt like he had not said more than five words to her since they were kids and when he found her, he said six words. She counted them.
When Levi was fifteen, his Dad left their family with the parting words that he had nothing at all worth saying that anyone would want to hear. Consequently, he rarely said a word at all and about 15 years had gone by, and he still did not talk.
The theater in town suffered severe damage, having the roof ripped most off and the stage was unrecognizable. As a result, Kelsey’s teaching contract was not renewed for the next school year. She taught drama and there was no need for a drama class when there was not going to be a theater for the performances. The damage was more than would be covered by insurance, so the theater was going to be closed permanently. The Victoria Playhouse was a popular attraction for the residents in the surrounding towns, so closing it was devastating to Kelsey who had performed since she was a child, on the stage many times with her grandma. Kelsey is determined to raise enough money to rebuild the theater and with Levi’s help, they are determined to meet their goal.
This heartwarming story set on Prince Edward Island, has delightful, real-life characters that find a way into your heart right from the start. There are a several unexpected twists and surprises along the way as well as beautiful examples of God’s forgiveness and the importance of family.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
Kelsey is a drama teacher but after a terrible storm she's told that she's losing her job. Also the local theatre has been damaged and it's not going to be repaired. Kelsey then decides to try and get funds to keep it open
Summer in the Spotlight is an entertaining return to Prince Edward Island and the lovely hamlet of Victoria by the Sea. Liz Johnson has penned a splendid conclusion to the Ross family trilogy. I sympathized with Levi as he faced down his tongue-tying stumbling block, while cheering him on as he moved towards his future with his secret crush, Kelsey.
Liz Johnson really knows how to bring the toe-curling chemistry to this shy couple. It was charming to watch as they finally got the courage to face their feelings for each other. The overall theme was overcoming whatever it takes to be there for those you love. My favorite line with so much truth that says it all,
"Because we do hard things for the people we love."
I enjoyed Summer in the Spotlight so much and revisiting with brothers Oliver and Eli, their families and Mama Potts too. I hope to enjoy more trips to Prince Edward Island with Liz Johnson in the future. I appreciate Revell Publishing making a copy of Summer in the Spotlight available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.
Very excited to read and acquire this beautiful love story. I can’t wait to see how Kelsey and Levi’s love story plays out. Lately all the books I love have been revolving around hurricanes I have no idea what that’s about but I guess in all the destruction it helps bring people together. I also love that Levi has to speak now or forever lose Kelsey forever. I think it’s an emotion so many of us can relate to.
