I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This has basic information about doing pyrography on wood, paper, and leather. The rest of the book is various alphabets and project inspirations. The alphabets are not as useful when using an ebook because it is difficult to trace them.
Super beginner friendly guide to burning letters.
Good intro with tools, and has lots of guide/info/tips on how to do lettering, as well as filling. Love the details on how-to/break-downs on fonts and calligraphy, and how to clean and seal off your work on wood.
Extra bonus for all the templates at the end!
Only downside is that this book is mostly about lettering on wood. Might work ok with pencil and paper, but not sure if it's the same on leather?
I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley (thank you!), and this is my honest review.

A very complete book on wood burning! It discusses the basics; what tools do you need or can you use, what techniques can you apply, what pen tips you cn use to get which result, how to create lettering, which techniques are advised, even tips on how to fix mistakes. All of this comes with pictures of the result on wood, leather and artist paper. I hadn’t heard of wood burning on paper, so tht was new to me! A VERY complete guide, which covers all you need to know, and even uses a large portion of the book on font templates,
I love to wood burn myself but this book teaches me new and valuable new things. I can highly recommend it and would definitely buy this book!
I received and reviewed an advanced copy of this book and I am grateful for this opportunity. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This book was great! As a newbie to this hobby I found this book full of great information.
I haven’t tried to do the lettering yet because I have been putting the tips and starter ideas to good use. I didn’t know about burning on leather. So that was a fun addition of information. This book is great for not only beginners but for all levels. There is a good amount of knowledge with in the pages of this book. I will be purchasing this book for my friend!
In short:
Did I like it ? Yes, I learned a lot.
Would I recommend it? Already have.
Would I read more by this author? Absolutely!
This is a great guide on lettering for multiple mediums! An essential piece to any crafters toolkit. As an avid crafter myself this will be very useful!
Lettering on Wood, Paper, and Leather by Lora S. Irish is a MUCH needed book! I have been doing a lot of logos for my farm and this is a book that while I've been searching has not been written about enough. I am now having wood lasering done and want to emphasize that many companies use Lettering on Wood.
The book starts out talking about the necessary tools and then goes on the illustrate the many way in which they can be used. The photographs are well done! The book also goes into good depth about transferring letters. I would like the book to have a bit more on the uses of beyond craft or a hobby and also uses for weddings etc. I would say this is such a valuable skill and to explore this craft to a further level would be appreciated.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher Fox Chapel Publishing for the opportunity to read and review Lettering on Wood, Paper, and Leather by Lora S. Irish.
This book has excellent advice on beginning wood burning and lettering. It contains lots of photos, safety information and fonts. I felt that the projects themselves were kind of dated and not really projects or sayings I’d use, but it’s good info to get you started.
I read a temporary digital arc of this book via NetGalley.
Lettering on Wood, Paper and Leather is a well written and accessible pyrography workbook by Lora S. Irish. Released 3rd Jan 2023 by Fox Chapel, it's 96 pages and is available in paperback and ebook formats.
This is a beginner friendly guide that presupposes no previous experience. It's written in easy to understand language and has a logical layout. The author provides a good introduction to pyrography including tools, supplies, and a concise short overview over safety and the different options for burning tools. I liked that she doesn't recommend one brand of tools over others, and all the brand names are blurred out or fig-leafed in the photos.
The intro chapters are followed by the project tutorials, grouped thematically: supplies and planning a project, lettering and font, troubleshooting, cleaning & finishing/sealing, and 6 start-to-finish tutorials for lettered signs and decorative items. Templates are included in the book. It's very well and clearly photographed throughout, and action shots are unobstructed, without fingers or items in the way of the "action". The projects themselves are appealing and upbeat and will make attractive gifts or home decorations.
Five stars. This would be a good choice for public or school library acquisition, makers groups, activity groups, and the home crafter's studio.
Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.
The perfect book for anyone interested in embarking on pyro-lettering. This book details the different tools used and the techniques that go along with them. Perfect for personalizing anything on wood or leather.
Lettering on Wood, Paper and Leather is a great guide on the art of pyrography. The book has a lot to offer with great advice on how to get started and achieve the look you want with your burn. Good beginning book.
Pyrography is one craft I can see myself doing and I’m sure I would enjoy it. Since it can also involve lettering, it’s really right up my alley.
This book has everything needed to start on this beautiful form of art. Besides all the necessary basics, it is also full of illustrations, some step by step instructions, and I love the font templates at the end. The fact that the author has been doing pyrography for 25 years gives you added confidence that she knows what she’s talking about.
A 5 star book for me.
Pyrography, also known as woodburning, is the act of creating art with a hot-tipped pen (similar to a soldering tool) a natural surface like wood, leather, or paper. The art created can be simple lines (like basic lettering) or complex masterpieces of surprising depth and detail.
Lora S. Irish focuses on transferring hand-lettered calligraphy to pyrography in this book. Filled with how-to details, tips, and projects, Lettering on Wood, Paper, and Leather is a perfect introduction to anyone familiar with calligraphy who is looking to expand into a new and challenging area. Irish covers the basics of what is pyrography, safety tips, and tools and techniques before explaining the differences in substrates that make for good pyrography. Information on various types of burning systems, cleaning and care for tools, preparation of the surface areas, and how to transfer patterns is detailed and written in an easy-to-follow manner.
She then turns her attention to the different styles of lettering and font elements, how to resize letters to fit smaller and larger works, incorporating and fixing mistakes (something I love seeing because I'm guaranteed to screw up at least once), cleaning and finishing a piece, and sealing your project to protect it for years to come. The provided projects range from beginner to advanced and are sure to provoke your inner creative spirit. Templates for the fonts used in the projects are provided so you don't have to make your own or go on an endless internet hunt for them.
Overall, whether you're new to pyrography or experienced, Lettering on Wood, Paper, and Leather will make a great addition to your artistic library.
First let me say that this is an excellent book for new to or interested in pyrography. Full of clear instructions and useful information. There are lots of examples for practicing techniques and manageable projects to try.
I wondered why this book felt more natural for me to follow? Then I clicked that Lora is left handed and all the photo’s show her using the equipment with her left hand. Hurray! At last I don’t have to hold pictures up to a mirror. Many thanks from all us lefties who live in a right hand world.
