Thief Liar Lady by D.L. Soria, an interesting premise, fairly well written with a good take on an old fairytale. A little long in some areas in my opinion but I did enjoy the book.
I was so excited to get a hold of this book for review. I love Cinderella retellings and this one has such a unique premise with Cinderella, named Ash in this retelling, in on the plan to trick the prince into marriage. The story was a little slow to get going, but I kept reading and the pace picked up around 25/30%. I think the frustration I had with this story is that I thought it would be less predictable due to the unique elements being introduced. Overalls though, it was a fairly predictable adventure, but still a fun retelling of Cinderella.
Okay, the first 25% or so I was struggling to get interested, but once this got going I couldn't set it down! I read the majority of it in one sitting. I love a fairy tale retelling/re-imagining and I thought this one was pretty unique! I liked that while yes, the evil stepmother was still evil, our MC was in on the plan with her - at least somewhat.
My favorite character of course was Rance. Loved loved loved.
This might be one of my favorite retellings now. It was very chill at first, and I thought it would go on like that, but in the second part of the book, things just went wild and I never expected it. Everything slotted into place so well that by the end I'd decided that I'm going to give it 5 stars after all, and not the 4 I'd planned previously. It's a lovely story.
This book was very engrossing, and very emotional. It definitely transported me into a court full of intrigue and secrets. The plot is actually more serious than just a Cinderella story - I definitely enjoyed that. It was a quick read as well, just a couple of evenings and I breezed through the story.
The story had quite a lot of strong and capable female characters as well, and I loved that. I also know that I spent half the book trying to decide whether this is YA or not, and I don't think it is. While the main character is 18, I also think it's a little bit of an afterthought, because nobody else is - everyone else is a lot older, with a lot more baggage. (There is also a very open steamy scene, although that's not always an obstacle to YA.) And while it does have that YA dynamic, it's still sort of like a good mix between a YA and adult novel, if you know what I mean? Things are unfolding slower and in a less provocative manner than YA will usually have it, but it still has that sense of adventure that you look for in a good YA book, and it's also a retelling of a fairytale, which is often a thing you'll find in YA. Interesting format, and I liked it.
Definitely worth a read!
I thank the publisher for giving me a free copy of the ebook in exchange to my honest review. This has not affected my opinion.
Political intrigue. Unpredictable outcomes. Angst and swoon-worthy romance.
Thief, Liar, Lady is a most unique and fabulous retelling of Cinderella that is impossible to put down from the moment the book is opened.
Cinderella (Ash) might have noble blood, but she's not a lady by any means. At first, she portrays herself as a villain, an antagonist with bad intentions to serve her wicked stepmother in a con scheme to infiltrate the royal household. Soon we find out, she has ulterior motives that she hasn't disclosed to her ill-intended family. . .or her betrothed, and the reader might find that they agree with the agenda, even if we don't agree with Ash's methods.
Ash
Ash (Lady Aislinn) was most hilarious in that she tried so hard to be ladylike, but her thoughts were a stark contrast from her outward appearance in an entertaining way.
Lord Verance
(Rance) is lovable from the moment he enters his first scene, taking an already intriguing book up several notches more. The reader cannot help but fall in love with this underdog, and root for him along the way.
Everette and Ryland
Both grow more despicable as the story moves along. While Everette has good aspects about him, his opinions are far from noble.
This was delightful read and highly recommended for all fairy tale retelling fanatics!
This was such a fun and unique twist on the Cinderella story. Based on the description, I wasn't expecting it to be quiet so heavy on the politics, but I did really enjoy that aspect. I did find the first third of the book to be fairly slow, but it really picked up after that. I definitely wasn't expecting that one really shocking event....
I liked Ash as a main character, and loved Rance as a love interest. I do wish that the stepsisters had gotten a little bit more depth; obviously Ash has a complicated relationship with them, but Adelaide especially seems like she could have some redeeming qualities.
I really loved the ending especially, and I'm really glad that Soria chose to end it that way when she could've easily gone a different route.
I really enjoyed most of this book! I'm a sucker for a new twist on popular fairytales, and I loved the angle that Cinderella (and her family) orchestrated the whole thing. The development of a relationship between Rance and Ash was very well-done, and I even liked the complicated knot of feelings Ash had for Everett. But OOOF the last third or so of this book! It was very rushed and ultimately unsatisfying. I understand faking their deaths was a great way to free them from consequences, but it was unbelievable to me that either character would just walk away from helping the rebellion and all that so easily. It was also never really clear what exactly Seraphina was angling for? She unfortunately fell into the villainous-for-villany's sake camp.
This book has SUCH potential, but the again, ultimately left a feeling of dissatisfaction.
Thief Liar Lady by D.L. Soria is a fantasy book based on a reimagining of Cinderella. I used to read a lot of these types of books when I was younger, but haven’t read one in awhile- this was definitely a more grown up version, which was enjoyable, and was overall pretty good. The story itself was interesting and I loved that all of the characters were not teenagers. The female characters were independent, smart, and self-empowered, which was an amazing update to many of these traditional fairytales. That said, I felt like this was slow at the beginning only to have everything be wrapped up extremely quickly and far too neatly at the very end. I would have been much happier if 100 pages has been taken from the setup and shifted to the real action and conclusion, as I think it just felt rushed. I’d say if you like this genre, you’ll probably like this book!
An interesting story full of twists, turns, fun characters and overall a book I would consider reading time and time again.
who didn't love cinderella growing up? this is a unique take on the classic tale. its a slow start to the point where i ALMOST put it down but glad i stuck through with it. thank you netgalley & the publisher for the oppty to read this, in exchange for an honest review.
Took me a little to get into, but once I did I couldn't put it down. I really loved this unique and fresh addition to the Cinderella tale. I love re-tellings, but it was so refreshing to read such a unique take.
a fun Cinderella retelling with a fun vengeful plot. This book had all the rage and revenge i would have loved in the original fairytale!
I’ve read my fair share of Cinderella retelling but this one was definitely different than I was expecting. The story begins after the events of the traditions Cinderella Fairy Tale, but you get flashbacks of the events through out the book. The author draws you in from the beginning and I was intrigued the whole time never quite sure how it was going to end. While the end felt a little rushed and the rules of magic were not quite defined l, I enjoyed the book over all. It had romance, political intrigue, magic, betrayal, spies, and plenty of twist. Thanks Net Galley and Del Rey books for the advanced copy.
What a cute story! I really enjoyed the FMC and the "story of cinderella" being so drawn out of proportion over time. It is a story you expect to be full of a air-headed cast and lots of whimsy. However, our girl is the type to carry a lock-pick with her. & glass slippers? so ridiculous. I can definitely see how the style would be for fans who are a fan of Naomi Novik.
This is stay up late at night call into work because you read all night long good! I love fairy tale retelling. I have been thinking about this book and can't get it off my mind.

4.75/5 stars! The premise for this Cinderella retelling was fun and I was excited to sit down and read it. It was so weird yet intriguing to have Cinderella and her stepsisters be secret masterminds, plotting to get their hands on more magic. With war on the horizon, the stakes couldn't be higher and the feminist undertones brought this story to life.
I received an advance review copy for free through NetGalley, and I am leaving this review voluntarily
Despite a slowish start, this book grabbed me. Once I got about a third of the way through, I was unable to put it down until I finished it at 3 AM. Whoops.
Rance carried this book for me. He was interesting, complex, and charming. I would read a book entirely about him. His dynamic with Ash was fun, but he is definitely the more interesting of the two.
For me, Ash felt rather thinly written. I didn't get a good sense of her personal motivations; she spent most of the book either following orders for others or reacting to life or death situations. The book picked up in the last 20 percent or so when she started to make decisions for herself, but some of these choices felt like they came out of nowhere. Perhaps the book was about Ash trying to figure out what she wanted for herself, but if so, that internal journey didn't get the space it needed in the narrative to be clear. I didn't dislike Ash (for the most part — more on that later), but she didn't command my attention either.
I also thought the ending was a bit too convenient with regards to the conflict between the Elorians and the Solisti, and I can't help but feel like the solution the characters came up with was kind of colonialist. Some of Ash's attitude toward the Elorians, in particular, came off as really privileged toward the end of the book (in addition to coming out of nowhere).
I still enjoyed the book a lot, especially the romance, but most of my enjoyment was despite Ash instead of because of her. I recommend this book to anyone who likes fairytale/Cinderella retellings, with the caveat that you should read this book for Rance, not Ash.

This is a creative reimagining of the classic Cinderella story, except that our Cinderella character is actually in cahoots with her stepmother and stepsisters to use magic to seduce the prince and take over the country's magical resources. I struggled to like the main character, Ash, because I felt like I never really got to know her since she was always trying to be somebody else. In fact, the only character I really found interesting at all was mysterious and brooding Lord Verance. The story got better once we got to see more of him. In all honestly, this book should have been about 10% shorter. It has a very slow start, and it takes too long to get interesting. Once the plot started moving, I was hooked, but that didn't happen until about halfway. The magic system of lustre was also not well-defined. Lustre is just this magical substance that can basically do anything that you want it to do. We know that Ash is trained in some kind of way, but there are never any details about that, making her use of lustre to get through every situation a bit of a cop out. Again, I thought this was a creative spin on a classic fairy tale, and I also thought the writing was good, but it needed some edits and a more believable world.
Thank you to NetGalley for an arc of Thief Liar Lady in exchange for an honest review. This review is wholly my own & may not be reproduced.
Oh my goodness!!! I was so thrilled to be able to review an advance copy of Thief Liar Lady and it did not disappoint!
This is basically a reimagined Cinderella (I love ANYTHING Cinderella).
Full of magic & girl power, this novel is a winner!
Aislinn’s magic is running out and she is in a race to fix it before it is too late. But what would a race against time be without some bumps along the way.
I love that this is not your typical Cinderella story with women being hateful to each other. I love the girl power camaraderie.
The writing was spectacular, the pacing was great & you will love the characters!
I highly recommend picking a copy of this one up. 4.5 stars!
