A Truth for a truth is book 4 of the Detective Kate Young series and it continues from the previous novel. Where Kate has accidentally killed her corrupt boss Superintendent John Dickson. To cover her tracks, she gets her friend Bradley to dispose of the body, so it doesn’t come back to bite her. The case of John Dickson turns in to a possible suicide/missing persons case which Kate gets involved in, which is good for her so stops the case revealing her involvement.
Since the death of John Dickson Kate and hear John Dickson’s voice in her head which guides her in the investigation which is not always a good thing. She wishes she could hear her husband instead and to talk too and confide in her and confirming her that she is doing the right thing.
I kept considering as the protagonist delves deeper into the investigation and keeps covering her tracks whether she herself has now turned bad. But it all turns out differently in the end.
This another great episode in the series which not only about corruption in the Police force but also people trafficking. I thought the story was a bit more drawn out than the others but still a great read 4 stars from me.
I've not enjoyed this series of books as much as her others. Not sure what it is with this one but it wasn't for me.
So book four picks up the ending of book three so your thrown back into the drama from the first page.
I have followed this series since book one and in my opinion this one was not the best and I strongly suggest to really understand and get the most from the book to read the previous three as they contain a lot of detailed history to the background of the story.
Kate is still on the hunt for justice to end the corruption within the force despite the massive curb ball that sees Kate struggling with her actions and choices that goes against all her principles and values.
I think the internal dialogue in this book became a bit wearing for me I can totally understand the demons of the inner critic but it just seemed too much.
It’s no secret that Carol Wyer is one of my favourite authors, so I was hotly anticipating the fourth instalment of the DI Kate Young series. This series is much grittier than the other series Carol Wyer has written, and with every book, the writing becomes sharper and the stories more complex, which highlights the author’s amazing talent.
DI Kate Young leads a relatively small team, and this means we get to know the characters within it fairly well. DS Morgan Meredith and DS Emma Donaldson have been with the team since the series started, and I’ve loved watching them grow, both as detectives and in their personal lives. There’s a significant development in A Truth For A Truth, which I will be watching with a keen eye as the series continues. Throughout the novel, and indeed the series, it has been very difficult for Kate, and us as readers to know who to trust. The third member of the team, DC Jamie Webster, and Kate’s boss, DCI William Chase, are characters who I questioned throughout A Truth For A Truth, and this made the investigation a very tense one.
The opening scene of A Truth For A Truth is so action packed that it guarantees the novel starts with a bang and keeps giving and giving until the final page. I could have easily read this book in a few sittings, had my circumstances not dictated otherwise! I was intrigued by how the investigation would be resolved and was hooked by all the clever twists and turns!
As always, the epilogue sets us up really well for the next book in the series, and I cannot wait!
Carol Wyer is one of my favorite crime writers, so it saddens me to say that this is my least favorite from her ever. The writing style didn’t work for me. I didn’t like already knowing how the crime ended. We get flashbacks of how it went down, I didn’t like John’s “voice”—that irritated me more than anything! I hope the next one will move forward.
A Truth for a Truth is the latest novel in the DI Kate Young series. It opens at the end of the last book and straightaway we’re thrown into the action. This pacy thriller features corruption, secrets, lies and murder and it will keep you hooked to the end. Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and the author for the chance to review.
Omg! This book is absolutely brilliant. I was hooked from the first chapter and right through to the last page.
Wow, I thoroughly enjoyed this next instalment of the Detective Kate Young Series. Really gripping. I love how these stories all just keep rolling straight into the next one. Already can't wait for the next instalment.
Well what can I say, talk about a gripping page turner. I was wondering what was going to happen to Kate, and I was scared to turn the pages in case someone found out. I sailed through this book at a rate of knots, and I literally read it in one day. I was getting quite agitated as the book went on, there were so many bent coppers and associates, and people were just not what they seemed. The trouble is too, forensically it’s so easy to slip up.
Anyway, I got to the end, everyone was happy, job well done, and BANG Carol brings another rabbit out of the hat. OMG I’ll be thinking about this for days …….
My thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and Carol for the ARC. Can’t wait for the next one.
The Detective Young series is one I am in love with! I love Carol Wyer's writing. I love the characters in this series as well, Kate being one of my favorites. I did enjoy the fourth book in the series although the first 1/3 of it wasn't my fav because they were investigating the disappearance of Dickson who we know from the third book is already dead. That part wasn't too exciting. It did pick up after that and like all the other installments, this was a fast paced, thrilling, twisty tale. Bring on the next book!!
⭐️4.5 ⭐️
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC in exchange for an honest, unbiased review.
A Truth for a Truth is the fourth book in the Detective Kate Young series — I’ve read the previous three and thoroughly enjoyed them all, so I was thrilled to get my hands on a copy of the latest instalment.
Although the book can be read as a standalone I do recommend reading the previous books first just to get to know the finer details of Kate’s backstory.
Beautifully written and well-plotted. Carol Wyer’s characterisation is spot on, and it was great to be back with the team again. What I love about this series is the dialogue — the banter between the colleagues is always witty and authentic and adds depth of personality to the characters.
A Truth for a Truth is a gripping crime thriller/police procedural. Can’t wait for book five!
Another great book by Carol Wyer.
This is book 4 in the Detective Kate Young Series.
A gripping book, a gripping series where Kate’s team are investigating sex trafficking and where you aren’t really sure who’s on who’s side with all the corruption within the team.
This book really keeps you guessing.
With a cliff hanger ending…..I want to know what happens next!
This is the 4th book in a series of DI Kate Young but it was my introduction to her. There is an abundance of history that has passed which leads to the scenario Kate is facing now but the author gave enough background that allowed you to step into her life and what happened next.
Determined to find out who killed her husband, Kate arranges for a meeting with the man she thinks is responsible and her emotions lead to a disastrous situation that will come back to forever haunt her. But she doesn’t know that and nor does the reader and thus birth of the title.
Kate hears voices as a result of all her trauma. Her husband and his killer are constantly in her ear: one encouraging her and one berating her. They are so present she doesn’t realize she is answering them out loud and her colleagues are worried about her.
The story revolves around a massive trafficking syndicate: people, firearms, money--- it is a full service operation. It’s broad reach leaves Kate distrustful of everyone, as well she should be, but this skews her interpretation of everything she sees and hears.
She is caught up in looking for traffickers of young girls and provides an eye opening look into their existence as chattel. The search for these men is really the stepping stone into the workings of the syndicate and her resolve to find who killed her husband.
Kate is a driven character not unwilling to cut corners to suit her needs. The investigative team she leads are an interesting crew of mixed characters that fluctuate between following her blindly and questioning her reasoning. She is a woman on a mission and the reader gets wrapped up in her tenacity to see this through.
A fast paced thriller that leaves Kate in a vulnerable situation that can only be resolved in another book!
Oh Carol Wyer, you have done it again! I raced through this new DI Kate Young book, needing to know how on earth she was going to get away with murder 😱 I am always in awe of this authors ability to have the reader in the palm of her hand every time. And ai know from previous experience with her books, that she is not afraid to go where you don’t think she possibly will. So what was going to happen to Kate… I had 400 hundred pages to get that answer…maybe
This is book 4 on this series and one that you absolutely need to read in order.at the end of the last book, Kate had a meeting with her boss, John Dickson. He is a corrupt and evil man, and she accidentally kills him. Knowing that the corruption in the force didn’t end there, she covers her tracks and tries to make it look like he has disappeared. And then she is tasked with the job of finding him.
Kates internal struggles are amplified tenfold now that she has taken a life. She doesn’t feel that she can trust anyone and the guilt is eating her up. But it was for the greater good right?
A big thank you to Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for my advanced reading copy. Carol Wyer is an author you don’t want to miss.
I have read more books in this series. This was not one of the best, I'm afraid. The plot was a little disjointed and did not feel really believable in places. The investigation also seemed patchy rather than organised and seemed at times to be based more on suspicions and voices in Kate's head rather than facts. I still like the main characters though there are a lot of lies to sort through. Kate is not happy , which is not suprising given the predicament she has found herself in.
This book is gritty insofar that human trafficking, forced prostition and police corruption are central to the plot. Some parts are cleared up, others still open .
Not abad read and certainly not an easy read . I am interested to see how this series continues
Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
Thank you NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the copy of A Truth For a Truth. I read and enjoyed the previous book in this series so I’m not sure why this one didn’t resonate with me at all. I really disliked Kate this time, and the sex trafficking was a distasteful subject. This was not the book for me, but if you love Kate and the series, you might love it!
Really enjoyed it and would give the book 3.5 stars. Hopefully it's not the final book in the series, because Kate definitely has more bad guys to bring down. The ending left me with so many questions. Who else knows the truth about what happened at the park? Can she trust everyone on her team, especially Jamie. I love the series, but this was probably my least favorite. For some reason I had a harder time getting into it. I blame this on Kate. She should really see someone about all the voices in her head. Now she is actually talking out loud as Dickson. It got to be too much after awhile. There wasn't any murder for Kate and her team to solve, the whole book was about tracking down Dickson. DCI William Chace proved he's still good at solving crimes. He loved his kitties. he even set up a pet camera so he could play with them when he wasn't home. Unfortunately, now Kate has another voice to add to her head.
Definitely recommend the book and the previous ones in the series. It was a great mystery/thriller. Loved the characters, story and writing style. I hope that's not the last we see of Detective Kate Young. Look forward to reading more books by the author. Loved the cover of the book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Amazon Publishing UK through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Another great Kate Young novel from Carol Wyer. A jaw dropping start to the book and an equally shocking ending hopefully means that there will be another addition to the series!
Thanks to netgalley for letting me review an early copy of this book. I love the DI kate Young books. When superintendant john dickson is accidentally shot and killed, kates team is tasked with finding him as he is corrupt and needs to face charges. Can kate take the spotlight away from herself, and point it in another direction? Did kate do it? Read it and find out, you wont be disappointed
This is the fourth book in the Detective Kate Young series by author Carol Wyer. This is my first read of a Carol Wyer novel so obviously the first book I have read in this series but it did not spoil my enjoyment at all. I have been meaning to try her novels for some time after reading some of the reviews of her books. I found this book a very good read and look forward to reading others in the series.
This is a police procedural set in Staffordshire and features Detective Inspector Kate Young. Kate is fully aware that her boss Superintendent John Dickson, is a violent and evil man and has known this for some while. But when she finally confronts him she accidentally shoots and kills him, forcing her to cover her tracks to avoid arrest. Dickson is reported missing and it is not long before people are talking about his corruption and Kate is assigned the case to investigate.
The corruption lies a lot deeper than just Dickson and Kate leads up a team to investigate his disappearance as well as the corruption links. A sex worker named Stanka supplied evidence against Dickson that leads to another corrupt officer, DI Harriet Khatri, and her dubious involvement with sex traffickers.
Kate is in a very tricky situation trying to investigate the corruption as well as guarding her involvement in Superintendent John Dickson’s death. With her not knowing who she can trust within the force this case is always going to be a difficult one as well as trying to avoid getting convicted of murder.
I really enjoyed this one, a police procedural with a difference. Strong characters and lots of action I will certainly be revisiting this series in the near future.
I would like to thank both Netgalley and Amazon Publishing UK for supplying a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
