The fourth book of detective Kate Young starts with the scene we have all been expecting but fearing - the confrontation between Kate and her corrupt supervisor who was responsible for the killing of her beloved husband and several other people we knew from book one. She kills him, no spoiler, it’s in the beginning. Now her team under her leadership must find his killer. Extremely tense, emotional and surprising this is an great installment of an exceptional series.
Thanks to Carol and NetGalley for allowing me to read A Truth for a Truth.
It is difficult to review this book beyond the synopsis without giving away too much.
DI Kate Young has returned from medical leave following the murder of her journalist husband, Chris, who was working on a child pornography and prostitution article.
Her team has been reassigned to the “Ice Queen”, DI Harriet Khatri and Kate has taken over a new smaller team.
She has no idea who she can trust and seems to be paranoid, hearing voices and zoning out of discussions.
The tension exists from the start and Carol has increased that tension using an interesting, but very effective technique which I initially found puzzling.
Interspersed with the storyline, she has included sections where she describes the conversations which Kate is hearing in her own head. It starts with her deceased husband, Chris , giving her advice and guidance and warning her of potential danger. When Chris’ voice fades, it is replaced by that of Superintendent John Dickson, who sneers, taunts, laughs and degrades Kate, issues threats and questions her every decision and move.
Definitely a page turner.
Overall a good, well written read with interesting characters, it wasn't an edge of seater for me personally but a satisfactory read in this series.
Thank you to Netgalley and Amazon Publishing for this ARC.
This was a good 4th in series book. Usually I feel like the author gets bored after book 4 and this one didn’t feel like that.
I can say there was a lot going on in this book with multiple view points that switched in the middle of chapters so the reader has to be paying attention this can’t be a quick read between chores type of book.
That being said there was still a lot going on in this book and there are some things that didn’t resolve which leads me to believe it is coming in book 5.
I feel like a quick summary in the beginning of this book could’ve done a lot for clearing things up just in case you’re not fresh off book 3
Unconventional sequel;
I have already read a few books from other crime series by the author and this one is also polished in terms of writing style and is easy to read. The story is skillfully constructed and is logical in itself. It is very unusual for the perpetrator to investigate himself, which raises a lot of unusual and interesting problems. I haven't read a book from the Kate Young series before and have to say that I found volume four very difficult to get into. On the one hand, it ties in with a great many things from previous volumes, which are explained but still remained obscure for me. On the other hand, Kate Young is an edgy character who, as a lone wolf, is on a crusade against corruption and who also has conversations with the dead, which was just too much for me in this frequency. She wants justice or revenge for the murder of her husband and is very dogged about it and doesn't always act in a comprehensible manner. It's formally a good crime thriller, but it's definitely more fun if you know volumes one through three and like the main character, which unfortunately wasn't the case for me.
Tension Fuelled..
The fourth outing in the DI Kate Young series finds Kate still in some state of despair. Corruption seems to be all around her and she just cannot escape it. As she heads up the investigation relating to Dickson’s apparent disappearance and continues to pinpoint loose ends, her anxiety reaches combustible levels - but can she stay one step ahead of almost everybody else? Tension fuelled and pacy with a well crafted and credible cast. A solid addition to the series.
First of all thank you so much Carol Wyer, Amazon Publishing UK and NetGalley for this gifted ebook copy of “A Truth for a Truth”. I was so excited to read the fourth book in the Detective Kate Young series and even more excited that I got to read it early! I’m not typically a “series” reader, but after I read “An Eye for an Eye” last summer I was hooked.
This book picked right back up from “A Life for a Life”. I don’t like to write spoiler reviews so I won’t go into much detail in regards to this storyline. Just know Kate’s team is investigating some pretty terrible people (trafficking/corruption/murder/sexual abuse) and you really get to know some more of the main characters. I’m a big fan of Kate’s character and how we see her rise and fall.
“A Truth for a Truth” was an emotional rollercoaster and I was happy to take the front seat. I flew through this book as there were twists and turns all throughout. I knew something big was going to happen, I just didn’t know when. Boy, did it ever! I was a bit bummed when I finished because now I have to wait for the next book.
If you truly don’t want to read the whole series you can just read this one. Carol Wyer provides a lot of detail pertaining to the team’s backstory in this book. I would, however, highly recommend reading the three books prior to this one to really get a feel for Kate and her team! I love a good police procedural (especially set in the UK) and this has quickly become my favorite series.
Wow!!! What a rollercoaster from page one to the very last
It begins with Kate having her final showdown with her nemesis, you think this must be game over, but no! Kate is put in charge of the missing Superintendent Dickson and she knows exactly where he is. Trying to cover her tracks while trying to bring down a trafficking ring and corrupt police means an action packed read!
Just when you believe its all over the last page hints it's no where near over!,
Oh wow! I came in from work and just had to finish the book before I started cooking as I only had a few % left.
The ending! Omg!
I've loved all the books in the series. The voices of the dead always slightly annoy me at the start, but I just get used to them and they are part of the whole reading experience.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the early copy.
I have really liked reading the Kate Young series but although I still enjoyed this book it wasn’t as good as the others in the sense of her keep hearing voices and all the corruption going on. It still had a good storyline, it was just the voices she was hearing that were a bit annoying. I still look forward to the next instalment
Wow, I absolutely love this series. From the first chapter to the last, this book will be wanting you wishing the next instalment was released. If you are wanting to read this book from this fab author I recommend reading the first 3 books so that you can follow Kates story, you will not be disappointed. Please hurry up in releasing the next book especially after that cliffhanger on the last page!
I have very much enjoyed the Kate Young series; the characters are well portrayed, the action is fast paced and the plot twists are many. However, I was somewhat put off in this instalment by the proliferation of bent cops and the voices that Kate repeatedly hears!
Carol Wyer has written a suspenseful and engaging book that challenges the reader's affections for the main character. Since discovering that her boss was responsible for her husband's death, Detective Kate Young has been collecting evidence against him. When the Superintendent confesses, he tries to kill Kate in a private confrontation, but their struggle ends with him dead and Kate struggling with what to do next. With help, she gets rid of his body and tries to create a scenario indicating he has fled because of the scandals being published about the Superintendent. The book unfolds with Kate trying to stay two steps ahead of the truth being revealed, as she leads her team in a "search" for the "missing" Superintendent. Kate continues to learn just how deep the "syndicate" of corruption in the department runs. It is a suspenseful story that has some unexpected twists and turns.
A big fan of this author and read all in this series! A Kate fan and have enjoyed following her professional and private life through these books……
This book didn’t quite hit the mark with me, and I wasn’t quite as gripped as with other books in this series.
Saying that it ended with a cliff hanger which will have me waiting for the next book!
I had read previous books with DI Kate as the main character. I found the use of the voices in Kate's head a bit irritating. The novel was well paced and generally enjoyed the story.
DI Kate Young #4
There’s a very dramatic end to book three
and an equally dramatic one at the start of book four which hooks you in from the get go. Kates murdered husband Chris has been a guiding voice in her ear and now corrupt superintendent. John Dickson’s sinister tones resound within her head. Kate has many demons and has many miles to go before they are exorcised. She has to draw on all her reserves to hold herself together and not let her mask slip as danger lurks all around. Now, she’s gunning for the corrupt syndicate Dickson heads. Who can she trust?????
First of all, Kate’s struggles, especially with her mental health are done extremely well, although Dickson’s sneering tones does get a little bit wearing!! Just imagine how Kate must feel! However, the purpose of his voice acting as a conscience or a source of provocation is very good and does lead to some intriguing situations. The atmosphere of mistrust the author creates swirling around Kate is so compelling as, like her, you have no idea who is trustworthy or who to distrust, although you have your suspicions rightly or wrongly.
It’s an excellent conundrum as wherein lies the truth? By the same token can Kate risk telling the truth and receive the truth in return and thus get the justice she seeks? Or, is that way too dangerous?
The plot is not especially fast paced on occasion but this suits the dilemma that Kate faces but that’s not to say that it’s without tension as at times things get very intense in some encounters. The ending is very good with several dramatic events and the ultimate ending is terrific as it conjures up so many possibilities to be explored in the next instalment. I can’t wait!!
Overall, Carol Wyer has created an excellent character in Kate Young. I think she is fascinating and different to other central protagonists.
Although this instalment does follow on from earlier books although it can be read as a standalone but it is a series that is well worth reading in my opinion.
With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Amazon Publishing U.K. for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the publisher for an advance copy in exchange for an honest review. I am always excited to see a new book by Carol Wyer out, and this one did not disappoint. We start where we left off in the last book and the aftermath of what has happened, all Kate's cases seem to be intertwined, but is there something missing, and if so, what will the outcome once she finds out? I can't wait for the next one.
Continuing in the DI Kate Young series, this book picks up right where the other left off after she has shot and killed Superintendent John Dickson. From this point on, she needs to be extra vigilant in covering her tracks so that no one suspects her involvement. She has the body disposed of and he is officially listed as missing since there’s no evidence of a crime. It’s quite fortunate when she’s enlisted to head the investigation into his disappearance. Now she can steer it in her favor and make sure nothing turns up to incriminate herself.
However, almost immediately after she kills Dickson, she begins to hear his voice in her head, just like she hears that of her deceased husband, Chris. I had hoped that part of the narrative would have disappeared after the previous books because it’s distracting and makes her appear unwell. And in this book, in particular, she apparently speaks in his voice out loud. But you can’t tell if it’s all the time or only some of the time, because her character can’t tell, either. I understand she’d have guilt and remorse, but there’s almost more of her dialogue as Dickson than as herself.
Her coworkers notice her behavior and worry that she’s going to have (or is possibly having) another breakdown. Not only because of talking to herself but because she conducts much of the investigation on her own, for obvious reasons. They don’t voice their concerns until late in their case but she convinces them to trust her. Even when she has to bring in other witnesses seemingly unrelated to Dickson’s disappearance. DCI Chase ultimately lets her run the case as she wishes, but he has his own secrets that lead to terrible consequences. Corruption runs rampant in the force and Kate’s not going to back down until she finds everyone involved and brings them to justice.
I have a feeling it’s going to take a while to dig out all of the corruption so we should have a few more books to come in this series and I’ll be waiting!
WOW.
That's it, just wow. I really don't know where to start with this.
If you have not read any of the Kate Young series then I need to say that it really should be read in order. For this book to have the effect it delivers then the back history is a must. please do read the other books first. trust me, you'll thank me for it.
Detective Kate Young
1. An Eye for an Eye (2021)
2. A Cut for a Cut (2021)
3. A Life for a Life (2022)
4. A Truth for a Truth (2023)
DI Kate Young is about to face her biggest challenge yet. One that could, at any moment tip her over the edge.
Kate is going to have to learn who she can and can't trust. She is thrown into the most emotionally challenging time of her career. Her actions could change the future not only for Kate but for the police Force.
This is a real edge of your seat read. At times I found myself holding my breath. I was second guessing every step of the way. I liked how the author has continued with the story of the voices in Kate's head. This really does help with the story plot. We get a good understanding of each side.
The twists, the turns, the suspense - all just done perfectly. I can not fault this book at all. The Author has exceeded all expectations and smashed it out the water with this one. I really can't emphasize how good it is.
I really don't want to wait for the next installment, I need to know where this series is going.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.
I love reading this series, The characters are brilliant, although I dont like some of them ( they are mean and nasty), I especially like Kate, who is slightly vulnerable but so clever and smart, The story flows well and has the correct amount of police procedure. should be made into a film or tv series, Read ALL the books and you will not be dissapointed, NO SPOILER ALERT. ... but the ending surprised me
