3.5/5
Hex You is the third and final installment in the Sisters of Salem series by PC & Kristin Cast. I loved the House of Night series and it’s why I originally requested this one starting with Omens Bite (book 2). I’ve had a more love/hate relationship with this series but I think overall, I did enjoy it.
I had an interesting relationship with the twins. We’ve all gone through a lot these past three books 😂. Hex You was definitely the best for their relationship. We finally get to see the twins communicate with each other and try to repair their relationship.
I will say Hunter was my favorite. And it’s not only because she’s a lesbian. Tho I do love her for that. Hunter has also had her own plan and gone with her instincts. Also she’s a cosmic witch and that’s really cool. I was sad that we never get to see Hunter have any sort of romantic subplot meanwhile Mercy has two throughout the series. I am glad there wasn’t the case of the bury your gays but I also wanted more for Hunter
I think this was probably the best of the series since we finally see some character growth. But overall, I was not a fan of this series.
Rep: white lesbian cis female MC, white cishet female MC, Egyptian cishet male side character, Egyptian side characters, white cishet side characters.
CWs: Murder, death, grief, blood, religious bigotry, prejudice against witches, injury/injury detail, snake like creature, violence, misogyny, sexism.
"Help me find what I have lost. The other half that makes me whole."
In the third and final book of the Salem Sisters trilogy, Hex You by the queens of paranormal YA books authors P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast, we follow the final journey of twin sisters Mercy and Hunter as they grow from moody, often self centered, insecure teen twins to sisters who understand that together they are whole.
Taking off where the second book left us, Mercy and Khenti (Guardian of the Underworld) are trapped in the ancient Egyptian underworld and they need Hunter to help rescue them. But Hunter is dealing with the evil goddess Amphitrite who has unleashed an evil eyeball eating monster on the residents of Goodeville.
The impeccable Cassandra Campbell once again does teen angst better than most teens but her portrayal of Khenti discovering the internet and Buffy The Vampire Slayer had me crying from laughing so hard.
This series, Spells Trouble (book 1), Omen's Bite (book 2) and Hex You (book 3) has been about so much more than fighting evil and the power of magic. It is about acceptance of all types of beings, religions, (like expelling the myth that witches worship Satan), sexual orientation, and sometimes your best friend is your family.
My favorite character Xena the cat/human has the best reveal and though I often wanted to yell at Mercy and Hunter, like Cher to Nicolas Cage in Moonstruck, "Snap out of it!" Once they stopped wishing "hex you" like a curse they were able to, "believe in yourself," and each other. A very gratifying conclusion to a four star series.
