This is a real mix of Fantasy and Fairy tale characters.
The characters are well developed and the story moves along at a good pace.
I was disappointed with the ending which left you with the end of a day.
This is the first book in a new fantasy series and therefore there is quite a lot of scene setting and introduction to characters.
I really enjoyed meeting these new characters, and I am very interested to see where their stories will lead.
If you enjoy stories of magical lands, brave warriors, witches, fights between good and evil and magical creatures, you will definitely enjoy this book.
The writing flows well and this is an easy and enjoyable read.
I really liked this - it was odd in an endearing way. The heroes were both heroic and flawed. It really was a strange bunch of people and tales but strange enough to not give everything away and to have you liking members of the group, wanting to know what happens to them next. I felt a little like these stories have been told before as folk tales, possibly in another language and that adds another dimension to the storytelling here. It feels both very familiar and completely different.
Fairy tales and fantasy combine to create an interesting, yet sometimes frightening story. The beginning descriptions of the differences in dragons, and the word usage of god vs God along with some other historical annotations were good to know about, but I didn't feel like I needed these as a reader to go along with the story. The evolution of Senka beginning with her birth in the prologue created a character that kept my interest. The snake at the start, her blindness, and her dog. I hesitate to get too descriptive as I might be presenting 'spoilers'. When Senka goes away from her home, each character she collects along the way has their own secret whether they knew what it was initially or had to discover it while traveling together. I found the vampire was unique, but a little off-putting. The snake, the wolf, and the witch were quite appealing. Along with the mysterious forest with the space-time warp. The writing style reminded me of Eragon by Christopher Paolini. However, it's been a while since I read the first of that series. Or perhaps aspects of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. The ending left me hanging a bit, but I could easily resolve this by reading the next book in the series. The question still remains; why are they traveling at all?
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this book. I enjoyed the writing style and the story overall. However, there were some really long, almost run on sentences. Other than those long sentences I enjoyed the rest of the writing. You can clearly see the scenery and what's going on with the characters throughout the story. The scenery was beautiful. I loved the different creatures and animals, especially the dog Vidra! The characters were all pretty interesting and fun to follow as well. I can't wait for book two and three though, so we can learn more about Zarko, Senka, and the others. I'm excited to delve more into the magic and creatures in the upcoming books. The book was only 200 pages, so it was a quick and easy read. Give this a try if you love fantasy. 4.5 out of 5 stars. The book is out now!
Tale Of Tales by Nikola Stefan.
Senka is no hero, but you never know what is coming for you. And if that burns down your house and family, while you are left blinded by your house’s guardian snake, the outlook becomes grim. So Senka clings to her dog’s back to survive, unaware of the fateful prophecy and the great changes to come. But when a wandering warrior becomes her protector and mysterious strangers join their hounded party through a series of seemingly chance encounters, they all begin to discover that all is not as it seems.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked Zarko and Senko and Vuk. I'm looking forward to the next book. 4*.
I really enjoyed this story! It is written in a folklore style, reminding me of the Grimm fairy tales, including the character sketches of old (at the start of every chapter and they are amazing!). Told like the old stories, we have gods and myths, warriors and witches, sheepherders and werewolves… (I don’t remember these from the old stories, but they were welcome!). It is a refreshing break from today’s fantasy, an old take on a new story, unlikely companions and heroes on a journey to … wherever the road leads them.
On the day Sinka is born she was supposed to have a faded name but because her mother died and called her Cinca her beloved father insisted that be her name. No whether that’s why the age of 10 her house was burned down and the snake guarding the home made her go blind and why bad things are after her is yet to be known. Thankfully she hooked up with a kind strong warrior who will take every diversion on his travels to keep her safe and it seems the further they go the bigger the group kits they pick up a thief whose hand was going to be cut off until Sanka begged the warrior to intercede and he would become her eyes all the travels. As a group travels things only become weirder still being traced by who knows what and they’re cold in a strange world they come across an unknown village and have to be brought to the shepherds who are the only ones to know the way out of the woods although the shepherds are relucted it seemed the head shepherd happen to have business that’s going to take him out of the word and say yes he will go with the group and show them the way but things only get weirder from there and I don’t wanna keep giving plot point away I do want to say that this was one of the most enjoyable fairytales I have read in a long time. I truly enjoyed it I read it all in one setting and wanted more when I was done. I cannot wait for the next book in this adventure fairytale to come out I will be anxiously waiting for it. I received this book from NetGalley the publisher but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
