I don't really know what to say about this book. It started off as if it was just the notes of the author and hadn't quite fully formed. The story later picked up and for the most part was quite well written and interesting. Towards the end it got so far fetched that it was on the verge of the ridiculous.
Some people may like it, others may not. I will leave thatf or you to decide.
There was a lot I really liked about this book. I felt like the story line was really good. I loved the twists and the ending, and the way that the creepy atmosphere was set in the beginning and continued all the way through, even when what was happening wasn’t creepy. I didn’t like any of the characters, which I think made me like the book that much more. Every single character had massive flaws that made them difficult to like, but that were so perfect for the role they were playing. I also loved that mental illness and the way that different people perceive mental illness was shown so accurately throughout this book with the character of Jethro and his sister, neighbors, and the police.
This book was not for me. I appreciate the publishers and netgalley giving me the opportunity to read and review this book.
Dark, unpredictable and terrifying, D L Mark’s Twist of Fate is a chilling and thought-provoking thriller that will keep you up all night.
An armed man massacres several people in central London, an attack that shocks the entire city. Claudine witnesses the whole thing in abject horror – especially as one of the victims is her brother, Jethro. Heartbroken, devastated and wracked with grief and despair, Claudine retreats to the family home in the Fens where she hopes to mourn her brother in peace. Claudine has had her fair share of heartbreaking news lately and she certainly does not need any more shocks and surprises – until the police find her and drop a bombshell that stuns her to her very core.
The police inform her that Jethro was the brains behind the attack and he orchestrated the whole thing. Claudine cannot believe her own ears. Jethro had his problems, but why would the gentle middle-aged man cause such misery and bloodshed – and then kill himself in the process? Something is clearly not as it seems and Claudine is determined to get to the truth behind what happened that day – starting with her brother’s research on a medieval cult. Claudine is sure that the cult holds the key that will untangle this very complex mystery, however, she needs to work fast and find the answers she seeks or she could be the next victim…
D L Mark’s Twist of Fate is a first-rate thriller that hooks you in from the first line and keeps you engrossed until the end. Brilliantly plotted and deftly constructed, this exciting, sinister and mesmerizing thriller is absolutely impossible to put down and D L Mark brilliantly ramps up the menace, tension and suspense and will leave readers floored with jaw-dropping twists and turns they simply will not see coming.
A terrific page-turner that will linger in your mind weeks after you’ve finished it, D L Mark’s Twist of Fate is a must-read for thriller fans everywhere.
This book was sadly just not it for me. Nothing at all happened for at least 75% of the book. There were so many times that I seriously considered not finishing it. I kept hoping that it would get better but it really didn't.
I will say Mark's writing style is good but it was the plot line that did not work for me. It felt really forced and I was not able to immerse myself into the story. I will still try other writings by Mark in the future.
I really enjoyed Twist of Fate. It was a bit confusing at times with its storylines but they all wove together nicely at the end. It was very atmospheric and creepy which I liked. The theme of alcoholism was addressed slightly with the sergeant and while that is a bit overdone in books these days this was done well. Overall I thought this was good and I will recommend in the shop.
I've had the benefit of meeting this author in real life and can confirm he's an absolute delight who, unless you knew he was a crime/thriller author, you'd never guess was capable of committing such dastardly deeds. But onto the book....
I enjoyed this very much. Crime/thriller is my bag anyway and this is a great example of a book delivering exactly what the reader expects. That's not to say that it's predictable (it isn't) or that it relies on stereotypes/tropes (it doesn't). Instead, it's a perfectly paced, twisty tale that appeals both broadly and to the hyper-vigilant reader that enjoys trying to spot all the clues and red herrings as the story progresses. Genuinely great book with lovely sub-plots and beautiful prose.
Thank you for the ARC
An absolutely gripping read which had me hooked from the start.
A brilliant author and I would highly recommend reading this book and others.
Please keep writing so I can keep reading.
Immersive and engaging. A recommended purchase for collections where crime and thrillers are popular.
A gripping read that hooked me right from the very beginning. I would highly recommend reading this book
Wow this was different. I enjoyed it, it had a lot of sadness, lost baby, murdered brother, fake friends, but it also had something to hold the imagination, It was good.
While the synopsis sounded like a book perfect for me. Sadly this just didn't work.
From the writing style just not working for me.
The characters didn't interest me enough. The detective just annoyed me throughout.
Sometimes the focus would go elsewhere and felt irrelevant in the end.
I nearly DNFd this but in the end completed the book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this book!
This book seriously did not work for me. The first few chapters set up an interesting premise, but then nothing happened until the last 20% of the book. Additionally, every character seemed fixated on events unrelated to the central conflict and completely ignored major red flags and clues that their theories/interpretations of events were very wrong.
I struggled to get through this book and only finished it because I was so angry with it and wanted to know if it would end any better than it progressed. It did not.
This book took on several different and creepy paths, and it was at times hard to keep up with all the twists and turns as a detective and the sister of one of the victims try to solve the grisly murder. It was gory and scary in parts, but I did not find myself enjoying it as much as I would have liked. I can be uncomfortable with satanic twists, and this book definitely has these types of elements. I like scary thriller type books, but this one was a little bit too much for me. I wish I could have enjoyed this book more. I received a free copy for an honest review from NetGalley.
This was quite a confusing book, it jumped about quite a lot and wasn’t as good as I’d hoped. I did struggle with it at times as I had trouble keeping the story straight. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
I found this book quite a strange read and from being initially hooked by descriptions of a suspected terror attack, the plot then seemed to go off on a tangent which I was not expecting. Although I am sure others will relish this plot twist, I unfortunately was not a fan. When detectives investigate further into the reasons behind the public knife attack of a number of people, a darker plot reveals itself, involving dark forces and potential cults, as well as brainwashing. I found this change of direction forced and therefore difficult to immerse myself fully in the storyline.
This is a twisty, action packed, supernatural thriller that overall I found to be an enjoyable Good Read, but, it's also chaotic and complicated.
It begins with a shocker; two married lovers meet and are having a lovers tryst in a graveyard when they meet a bloody death. Then, another couple are recalled to work following a terrorist attack. I found it an easy 3* Good Read, but, confusing at times.
Thanks to Head of Zeus for the opportunity to preview.
Twisty, relentless, jumps around quite a bit, with a detective in recovery and fighting more than one demon. The book travels several paths - creepy, intense with some supernatural flair. A unique book that is well-written, engaging, and procedural all in one.
When an armed man massacres people in London, Claudine witnesses it. Horrified, she finds that one of the victims is her brother.
When contacted by the police she is told that the whole incident was orchestrated by her brother. If Claudine can't get to the truth of what happened then more people will die.
I enjoyed this book even though I didn't expect to. There is a lot of religious terminologies employed but underneath it is still a good detective story. It has the usual, recovering alcoholic detective who slips from time to time. He’s a great detective but as well as solving crimes he is fighting demons all the time. It’s well-written and paced with a twist at the end.
My thanks to #NetGalley for this free ARC in return for an honest review.
I received a gifted copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review as part of the book tour hosted by Random Things Tours.
Twist of Fate is a creepy and intense supernatural crime thriller that keeps you on your toes. Claudine is working in London when her brother Jethro is killed along with several other people, violently in front of her. Claudine is eaten with survivors guilt that she didn't do more to keep Jethro safe from harm. Why Jethro when he wouldn't hurt a fly? But Jethro came to her office the day before the attack in desperate need to talk to her, but she brushed him off as she was too busy to spare the time for him. Could it be connected to why he was murdered? Claudine is now a witness in the polices investigation, but the officer in charge is pinning the plot of the violent knife attack on Jethro. Claudine returns to where her brother lived in his isolated shack surrounded by swampland and seeks to find out why what happened happened and how/if her brother is involved. This book is gripping from the start and although the characters are all a little disturbing, it really adds to the creepiness of the book!
