It's a fu, easy read - cute characters and slow burn romance.
Piece of Cake is a used-to-be-popular wedding magazine with offices set in Nashville, TN -- home of most of the bachelor and bachelorette parties. Claire is an ex-Dallas socialite that's trying to find her own way after losing access to her trust fund. She broke the morality clause when she made a mess of her last job. Dom is a ladies' man influencer that's brought in from NYC to Nashville to help turn around the failing magazine. They're both put on a special project and end up falling in love at weddings.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
Piece of Cake follows Claire as she attempts to save the Southern wedding magazine she works for through a video series.
While this has some of my favorite elements (weddings, a slow-burn romance), this book was just not the right fit for me. The humour and the dialogue came across a bit cringe and I didn't connect to the characters. Admittedly, this was a DNF for me. I wasn't invested in the story enough to need to know how it ends.
Claire works for a wedding magazine in the south. When she is struggling to keep the magazine afloat, she is forced to team up with Dom on a project that could save her. The two will have to work together to save the magazine and possibly discover something between them. I was not a fan of this book. I liked the idea and the cover but the actual story was not it for me. I felt as though the story was unfinished. A very long build-up and then a rushed ending. Not for me. I might recommend this to a friend or family member.
Piece of Cake is a bridal magazine based out of Nashville. Claire has pitched a behind-the-scenes wedding show that could keep the magazine from having to close down. Dom is brought in from NY for his production knowledge and IG following. Together, they have to get the show made and save the magazine.
I enjoyed the premise and the wedding glimpses were fun. I also liked that there was some personal growth and family connection sprinkled in. This book started a little slow, but once it got going, it was cute. Ending wrapped up quickly and I wish I had gotten a little more there.
Overall: ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Spice Level: 🌶️/5
I received this book for free via NetGalley in exchange for a free review.
Despite the fact that Piece of Cake by Mary Hollis Huddleston and Asher Fogle Paul felt like a beach read, the prose and plot did not move as quickly as expected. I enjoyed reading it, but it was not particularly memorable.
I read quite a few reviews of this book before I cracked it open and was kind of afraid of how bad the book might actually be. I was pleasantly surprised. While the plot isn't deep, it is an entertaining read. The characters have a lot more development than I expected and I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is the kind of read that fills some extra time without filling the reader's mind with a lot of depth. That's not necessarily a bad thing. Every now and again, readers needs some fluff in their TBR pile.
Claire is trying to build a new reputation for herself with the Piece of Cake Magazine after she scorched the earth on her previous employer's wedding planning service. Claire's boss has brought in a media guru from New York to gain a social media presence for the magazine and tasks Claire to work with him. At first she is resistant, but eventually gets on board with the idea. Watching all this unfold is a delight for the readers, especially when it comes down to her own sister's wedding--planned by her former boss.
Mary Hollis Huddleston and Asher Fogle Paul have collaborated to create a fun read for whiling away an afternoon or two. Four Stars.
Harper Muse provided the copy I read for this review. All opinions expressed are solely my own.
This falls into the "meh" category for me. I read it this month and still had to reference my notes to remember the actual story. It was okay in the moment - a bit of a distraction - but it didn't leave a lasting impression and dare I say, felt a little chaotic and even flat at times.
Claire is trying to keep her employer, a wedding magazine, afloat by pitching fabulous over the top Southern wedding coverage. But she buts heads with Dominic, we has been brought in to help. Will enemies become lovers?
I love a good enemies to lovers romance, but the main characters in this one just didn't do it for me. Not a complete loss though, because the weddings were bold and funny and I'd read a magazine about them any day!
I received a copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review

Was not fond of this at all. It quickly became clear that there were too many ideas in play to result in a successful story and the dialogue felt stunted. I struggled to connect to any of the characters or their happenings.
Received a copy for review.
This book had a great premise but neither one of the protagonists were like able. The slow burn didn’t work and there is really no connection until the end of the book.
Piece of Cake by Mary Hollis Huddleston & Asher Fogle Paul was a nice slow burn romance.
I wished it there more spark with the characters. I wished I would have connected more with them.
But overall it wasn’t a bad read.

Thank You Netgalley and Harper Muse for your generosity and gifting me a copy of this eARC!
Will update when the Harper Collins union new contract is finalized. Thank you again to the publisher for the copy.
This one was not for me. I just didn’t like the main characters. Didn’t really think this was a good book.
This book wasnt half bad. I kind of it enjoyed it. Loved the first half of it but the second kind of feel through the cracks. I love a good book that turns rich people into normal class citizens but i didnt like the main character in the end
I was drawn in by the cover. It’s really fantastic. I unfortunately can’t say that about what was under the cover. I did like Claire’s growth and that’s about it.
Thank you NetGalley and Harper Muse for this ARC. ~I was given this book and made no commitments to leave my opinions, favorable or otherwise~
Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read this eARC.
This is somewhere between 2 and 3 stars. It's just okay but a lot of it felt forced. I didn't particularly like Claire but I did like seeing her grow through the book and figure herself out. The romance was so unbelievable I had secondhand embarrassment.
This book was just ok for me. I think it definitely fits better under the women’s fiction genre than romance. The parts that I enjoyed most were the parts where Claire was learning about herself and finding her way. She’d created a scandal for herself in her previous life as a wedding planner, and it was nice to see how she had grown from that to figuring out how to be part of a team instead of cutthroat competitive at all times.
The romance part didn’t really work for me as much. I didn’t really believe it. The argument between Claire and Dom felt more like “they need to have a conflict now so they can make up later”, I think in part because the flip-flop to understanding and resolving it happened so fast. I enjoyed some of their moments of banter, and there was development of the relationship along the way that work, but I didn’t feel overly invested in it.
I think the book was a little too long and some of the wedding coverage got a bit repetitive. Even though each event was different, there were probably at least one too many until Claire’s sister’s wedding. It started to drag on at that point.
Again, the book was ok. There were things that worked and things that didn’t work for me. If people go in viewing it as women’s fiction rather than a romance, they may be more satisfied in the end.
A fun read!
First of all, the cover is beautiful! It gives all the summer feels. Now onto the book itself - PoC was a fun read, intended for a millennial audience. It had romcom typical romcom staples like a fake dating scene and grand apology.
I did find the scene where the MCs call a bride insane for wanting to dance with her late dad’s ghost IN PRIVATE at HER wedding very insensitive. People grieve in different ways. There were also a lot of info dumps and little chemistry between the female main character and literally anyone else.
All things considered, I would include this book in a recommendation list, most likely, but there is still progress to be made for the authors.
Thank you to NetGalley, Mary Hollis Huddleston, Asher Fogle Paul, and Harper Muse publishing for providing me with an advance copy of this book. While I did receive an advanced copy all thoughts in my review are strictly my own.
What first drew me to this book was the premise of a Dallas socialite who has fallen off and basically been blacklisted by her family. Add to that the premise of weddings and a hot guy from New York City and I was sold. This rom com was such a fun ride for me, I felt like I was watching a movie. I found Claire to be super relatable in her problems (not in that she's a ex Dallas socialite). She struggled with trying to measure up to everyone around her and ended up self destructing and I think that's something a lot of us can relate to. Additionally, I felt that the content in general was very timely and relatable. It mentions the social and economic impacts of the quarantine and shut down. Additionally, this book focuses a lot of content creators or influencers and I found that the way Dominic came to his notoriety was also something that seemed very relatable, especially for people trying to make it in content creation.
This rom com is a slow burn, but I enjoyed watching Claire and Dom's relationship build. They started off as enemies in the workplace and then grew a friendship before ever trying anything romantic. While there was 0 spice, I think that the flirting and relationship building was cute. Overall, I gave this book 4 stars and I truly enjoyed the story, I liked following them along to all their different weddings and finally seeing Claire find herself, in addition to their budding relationship.
The only negative I had for this book was that when downloading to Kindle the formatting was messed up: the page breaks showed as qqq, Harper Muse banner was across every page in inconvenient places, and some of the formatting of the pages was very strange. I checked my Kindle version against what was available in the NetGalley shelf app and it was completely different and much easier to read. Additionally, I found two things I think may be errors and wasn't sure if I should point them out but have them listed below if interested.
pg 136 typo says Claire's engagement party I'm pretty sure it should be Lucy's
pg 161 after Bon Voyage there is brackets that I don't think are meant to be there- also somewhere else in the book these two brackets showed up but my apologies I must not have marked them I think it was around Daphne's wedding.
