This was one of the loveliest, most heartwarming stories I read last year. Thank you very much for putting into the world. It's a bit of a twist on fairytales and I believe that's what makes it wonderful.
This was a fun twist on fairytales. Each page was a standalone tale, but then characters and stories reappeared later in the book. One suggestion - make sure you plan to read the whole book without much delay before picking it up again or else you may not remember the subtle call backs! I was provided with a copy of this book free of charge and this review is my honest opinion.
This was a favorite of the year!
I love the 40s Disney art style very much, and the comics are at once humorous and heart warming.
I immediately bought a copy for myself.
This graphic novel is incredibly cute. I immediately want to buy it for myself. The art style alone tells so much of the story. The characters are adorable and the dialogue is very amusing.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an advanced review copy.
This was just a really cute graphic novel. It takes a lot of common fairy tales and tropes and gives them a bit of a (unusually dark) twist. There are some comics that are slightly disturbing, but they are balanced out by others that are surprisingly wholesome. This would be a perfect fall time read, and would likely appeal to fans of Over the Garden Wall.
Twistwood Tales is a brilliant webcomic from the brain of AC Macdonald, heavily inspired by the fairly tales many of us have learned growing up … with a twist.
These aren't especially dark, but many familiar characters are morphed, just a bit, and given a bit of a modern take. The comics discuss things like mental health, modern moral quandaries, or even just add some of today's humor.
It's a great webcomic, and it's brilliant as a book. I read it in a sitting, and I recommend you try and do the same.
Fun short-form comics with late autumn and early winter vibes to many of the short stories. I liked that many of the characters repeated through the various panels. Reminiscent of Sunday morning comics in style and humor. I think fans of other series like "Garfield" or "Calvin and Hobbes" would enjoy this or fans of the aesthetic of "Over the Garden Wall." I think the searching game in the end to find all of the clues for each page is a fun way for the book to continue engaging the reader after all of the comics have been read. The artwork was enjoyable.
Thank you, NetGalley for this arc!
Twistwood Tales by AC Macdonald is an extremely comforting comic collection. I’ve followed the creator on Instagram for a long time, and was super excited to see a book! All of the comics are relatable and cozy, with a ton of necessary life lessons. I love the characters and their adventures, and all the comics have a silly undertone. When I say this book is cozy, I mean it’s completely cozy where I could easily curl up on my couch with a blanket on a cool, Fall morning, drinking a pumpkin spice latte and reading this book and feel immersed.
The only thing I disliked about this book is that almost all the comics are on the creator’s Instagram. It’s a great book for people who don’t want to spend hours on Instagram reading them individually, but I have seen most of them through the years of following the creator.
It is still an amazing book, and I highly recommend.
Weird and wonderful with eye-catching artwork. Will definitely purchase a copy for my at-home library!
I think what pulled me into this graphic novel, was the cover, i.e. the art. I'm a sucker for art like this, it kind of looks like Calvin and Hobbes, but I wanted the rest to be enjoyable too, and boy I was rewarded with everything that came with it.
I love magical stories, where lots of adventures take place, it's kind of like a little boys overactive imagination. It also inclused subtle themes like mental health and not really imposter syndrome, but just wanting to be more.
I'm definitely getting this as a hardcopy, because it's a book I'd like to read over and over, because I would discover something new every time! Please, if you like graphic novels, do pick this up, you will not regret it.
Let's start by stating this plainly - this book as a bit weird. If you like a straightforward narrative this is not the book for you. But if you're cool with strangeness, if you loved "Gravity Falls" and especially "Over the Garden Wall", then this is the book for you. It's a collection of web comics so there is no narrative, just moments and recurring characters. Some pages are one-off gags and puns, mostly darkly humorous. Other pages are a reflection on the nature of existence and a plea to be kind to yourself. This is a book you could return to time and again, always finding the thing you need be it a simple laugh or some reassurance in a hard time.
I have seen some of the panels of this story on different mediums. I am not a regular follower, so I cannot say exactly how many of them are already available online. I also do not know the backstories of several of the characters that come and go throughout the book.
It is a series of panels, some longer than a page, and others are individual tales, all of which sort of culminate to a common ending.
The most endearing part of these characters is the heart. The art itself is a close second. The art is the kind that I would love to see on a board game, the kind I might get more interested in playing! The creatures introduced to us might look cutesy, but some of them have very serious agendas.
There are some familiar characters and some original ones, some with nefarious purposes, some with slightly mischievous ones and finally, some who just want to make others happy or do good. The dialogues are short and simple, to the point, but they do touch the heart (or at least they did for me). The colour palette suits the overall sombre tone, but each 'story' has its own spin. The characters all stick to their personalities and have adventurous along the way.
I highly recommend this collection to keep at home and dip in and out of. I have not yet purchased any modern books of comic strips. This would be in the running if I did.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers but the review is entirely based on my own reading experience.
Thisis a twisted collection of comics , but done in a very adorable way.
Artistically it was beautifully drawn and such a treat for the eyes
So incredibly charming. I don't remember when I first found Twistwood Tales on Instagram but these comics are always a treat. I'm so happy to be able to have read them compiled and from the beginning. For fans of Over the Garden Wall for sure!
This is a punny collection of comics with lots of word play and silliness. I didn't find it funny, but there are some cute characters and the art style is what I'm calling cozy goth. I think the right audience will love this.
Twistwood Tales is a really cute graphic novel about a bunch of characters interacting in the woods. The art style is really nice and I love the autumnal colour palette. The writing is funny and easy to read and set out like comic strips that loosely link to each other. I did occasionally find the story hard to understand because they were so short but each one is charming none the less and I liked how they cleverly tied together. I'd definitely recommend this to everyone who love graphic novels or middle grade kids.
These were so good! Typically, web comics that are gathered into a book end up being overly fluffy, but these had a little bit more of a narrative arc. The art style reminds me of Over the Garden Wall. I would read another book of these in a heartbeat.
Twistwood Tales is full of dry, dark humour and the puns are perfection (ProcrastiKnight)!
This comic features well thought out twisted characters that are cute and melancholy.
Mixture of retro/vintage art style adds to the overall gloomy aesthetic.
If you are after a fun, adorable, quick read this is for you.

Spend time with an enchanting cast of characters who live somewhat peacefully in a deep, dark wood. Here nearly everything has a face and a personality, and most of them love to chat.
These charming creatures started life as a webcomic, and now reside within the pages of a delightful book.
Though there's a somewhat dark "Over the Garden Wall" vibe, most of the strips are fairly gentle, and probably suitable for the wee ones.
I absolutely loved the book, and immediately ordered a copy to share with family and friends.
