I really hoped I could appreciate this book more but it simply wasn't my cup of tea.
The whole book is a series of short episodes (one/two pages long) where fantasy is mixed with sarcasm. So, expecially from my personal point of view, it could have been great but for some reasons I wasn't intrigued and all I felt was boredom. I haven't developed interest for any character; maybe it depends on the fact that there isn't a proper plot and each story seems separate from the one before/after.
In other words, this book it's not bad (I'm quite sure someone else is going to really enjoy it) but it wasn't unforgettable. It's like when you close a book and nothing of it remain with you, time few days and you don't even remember it.
This graphic novel was super cute. I liked all the characters and thought the little adventures were super fun. I liked the art style as well, and I would definitely recommend it. It was a cute, quick read.
Each page is filled with a hysterical, and insightful tale about the inhabitants of Twistwood. A town so weird, it's almost normal.
I was expecting a full length story when I started reading Twistwood Tales, but to my pleasant surprise it was a collection of short stories that interlocked with each other gradually. The characters we adorable, I personally loved the plague doctor. Filled with dry, borderline morbid, the humor will appeal to a niche group of people. However, those are the type of people you want to be hanging out with. For all the quirks, they have big hearts, just like the characters in Twistwood.
I will be purchasing a copy of this for the library. A lot of my kids have this type of humor.
I absolutely adored this book! The illustrations are sweet and give off some Cuphead vibes. The writing is hilarious and witty, but also tender and loving in certain panels. I felt like a kid again reading these comics and I really loved that it was smart and funny but also clean enough I can let my kids enjoy it with me. Definitely will read this over and over again!
I received this and as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for giving me access.
If you love puns or taking the literal sense of any phrase, Twistwood Tales is for you.
Starting our we have a collection of comics that refer to their literal sense of meaning vs the good ol' adage we are used to. As you dive deeper into Twistwood, the story becomes more continuous with a sprinkling of a side story. This was fun, cute, and has some good teaching moments.
I wouldn't consider this is a children's comic, but it is great for adults that would understand the humor.
This was so cute! I loved it!
It was the perfect mix of light spookiness, humor, and heart. I especially appreciated the twisted humor of the plague doctor. I thought the images fit the tone really well; they were cute and it felt like a folktale.
I followed the creator on WebToon and plan to keep up with this series.
Thank you for the e-arc!
Thank you for the EArc NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing. I wasn’t in the know about the Twistwood Tales prior to picking this book up but I didn’t feel like I needed history in order to enjoy this book. The characters are cute. Sometimes it’s hard to tell when a “story” starts and ends but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment overall. Enjoyable quick read for anyone who enjoys some irreverence in their comics.
A little dark, a little sweet and silly, sprinkled with time-worn wisdom, this collection is a good time waiting to be had. The art is cozy and imaginative and pairs beautifully with these little bites of story. These would be great to hand-sell to those customers who want something a little different….maybe they like modern fairytale re-tellings and horror stories, but also want to get snuggled in by the fire and just relax now and again, but with something a little twisted.
I love the art style but I admit I’m not sure who the public is. It’s a collection of vignettes with characters that meet each other and short stories that don’t necessarily have a direct continuity so it’s a bit confusing for young readers. It’s also quite dark at times. I think it’s best for adults who love wordplays and fairy tale settings.
This story is perfect for anyone who loves fairy tales, fall and all things spooky! The characters are adorable…and a little bit twisted. The color scheme and artwork pair with the stories perfectly. This book felt like a warm cup of apple cider!
I really liked this Graphic Novel. I enjoyed the art and the small stories. Some were very twisted but funny and I know my middle grade daughter would find them humorous. I do not believe this entire book can be labeled as middle grade as is though. Middle grade books do not have adult themes such as bars and alcohol. To be labeled properly as middle grade these small shorts would need to be removed or the book needs to be recategorized.
This was adorable! A little twisted, a little silly, with some deep dark moments and wisdom. I will definitely buy a physical copy to display!
Five stars for this unique invention and also for how adorable the illustration style was. The humour was, for me personally, sometimes lacking and not suited to my tastes, hence the lower rating.
Twistwood Tales drew me in with the cover and title and, well, I’m glad it did! This was a cute, charming yet slightly odd book with adorable characters. I love the retro feel and design of the artwork. The story is sometimes funny and sometimes heartwarming, but always entertaining!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
I accessed a digital review copy of this book from the publisher.
This book takes on classic fairy tales and common sayings and gives them a twist. The humor usually veers on the side of the dark, but not extreme. The art is cute and in a sepia-tone pallet. Many of the tales are interconnected through characters and events but can be read in any order.
I really enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, with just enough to make the reader think about what the author included.
This is a great book for anyone who enjoys dark humor or odd comics.
Thank you Netgalley for letting me read and review this graphic novel. I loved reading this graphic novel. It was funny, heartwarming, and has good messages throughout. The art style is cute! And the characters are great. Everyone should definitely read this!
I came into Twistwood Tales, completely blind. I didn't know what to expect. All I knew was the that art was adorable and a friend had recommended it. I fell in love rather quick with this and after finishing it, I quickly subscribed to the webcomic and am excited to dive into it to read more.
At first, I was a little confused and it took me a moment to settle into the story as it starts off with a bunch of single-page, four-paneled comics with different characters. As I continued, the characters started to appear again and their stories started to overlap into these wonderful, heartwarming tales. There was humor that was up my ally with the play on words.
The characters and the art were so cute! While I do think my favorites were Bucket Boy and The Robber Duckies (there name being part of the humor that really had me laugh), they were all adorable. Each one was so well drawn and I loved seeing theme pop up. The color palette was stunning and really gave the fall vibes and characters living in the forest. The art style and color palette really helped bring them all to life.
The final tale of this volume was a longer one that seemed to really help tie everything in. It was a wonderful wrapping up point for this volume, but also made me, as previously mentioned, eager to dive back into these tales and find out more about what was going on with all of these characters.
Thank you Andrew McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC.
This book was a complete delight. The cover drew me in, because the art style is reminiscent of Over the Garden Wall. And wouldn’t you know, the book delivers while managing to remain distinctly unique.
The story is told in small vignettes featuring the wide cast of characters. At first they seem disconnected and sparse, but the longer you read, the more connected the world becomes. And at some point I found myself feeling the full spectrum of emotions. It just sneaks up on you. The characters are cute, quirky, and have important lessons to teach. Some of it can be a bit adult, but it still manages to remain child-appropriate.
When I started the book I thought it would be an ultimately inconsequential, if cute, read. However I’m left with a story that is going to stick with me, and I’ll definitely be picking up a copy when it releases.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was amazing. The art style is cute and a little retro, the characters are very lovable, and the humor is weird (so just up my alley). I also love the little "game" that has been added. I can't do it well on my phone as I would have to go back and forth and back and forth, but if I had a physical copy I'd have fun looking for the hidden items!
Very cute, quirky quick read. The characters, art, and humor complement each other perfectly, and this is exactly the aesthetic I would have gravitated toward as a kid. The only complaint I have is the lack of diverse skin tones and features on the humanish characters.
