This was my first book by this author and so far I'd heard nothing about good things about her other series.
I've finished this book interesting in reading more of Laura Thalassa's work but unfortunately I can't say that I loved this one. The potential was there, but ultimately it didn't grip me in the way that I would have liked. I think if you're knew to the paranormal genre, you'll love this. But for someone such as myself, it fell a bit flat. The characters didn't grab me, the stakes didn't feel very real and it made it all feel a bit colour by number.
Laura is really wonderful at writing all the intimate/spicy moments. She's clearly really amazing at that. I also really like that she's not afraid to do something random and out there. I was really ready to have fun with this book, pure escapism and to just go with it. I'm not sure if I'll pick up the next book in this series (unless the reviews for it are crazy enthusiastic) BUT I will for sure pick up her previous work that seems to have a darker tone. Her writing can be so impressive at times, it seems that this one just wasn't for me.
Oh! I MUST share my favourite quote. "Only fools and warriors pass out under an open sky. Reckless woman, you are a bit of both."
First of all, Laura Thelassa really came through with this one.
I don’t know what I was expecting, but it was not this. I really didn’t see most things coming and that was pretty refreshing. Bewitched had so many of the fantasy tropes we have seen before but still managed to feel new, magical, and fun!
The “touch her and die” vibes were immaculate from Memnon. And I am so intrigued to see how Selene will continue to develop as a character.
Overall, I thought this was a fun and fast paced story that I can’t wait to see fully play out. My only regret is having to wait so long for the next book to come out!
Selene is a witch but every time she uses her magic she loses her memories. In order to keep track of her memories she writes everything she can remember in her journals or on post it notes.
She is trying to get accepted into Henbane Coven, a university for witches but in order to be accepted she is told she needs to complete two tasks. One of these tasks include going on a magical quest which takes her to Peru and she wakes up Memnon the Cursed. He mistakes her for his dead wife who betrayed him, and he seeks vengeance. She escapes from Memnon (or so she thinks), returns home and gets accepted into Henbane Coven. While attempting to balance everything, Memnon followed her home and on top of that dead witches are turning up dead on campus.
Yes, it does end on a cliffhanger.
My thoughts:
- Some of Selene’s choices, had me shaking my head and saying “WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” “WHY???””
- Nero & tattoos- I have questions and very curious to learn more about this
- Kane - I need to know more about him
- I liked the magic system, specifically how supernaturals have some identifying marker to their magic.
Interested to see where this story is headed.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher!
I very much enjoyed this book!
My absolute favorite trope of all time is 'enemies to lovers' and that is truly what hooked me in here.
Our FMC, Selene, is a witch who loses a memory or *several* each time she uses her powers. She is intelligent, determined, with a good head on her shoulders, and this is truly a difficult situation to be in - able to use magic when so much of the world cannot, but incurring a terrible cost each time she does.
In an attempt to complete a magical 'quest' to beef up her application to be accepted to a coven, she intends to visit the Galapagos Islands but things go awry very quickly. She ends up freeing a mysterious man, Memnon, who has been entombed and kept alive and in stasis for 2000 years. He believes her to be his wife AND the person who entombed/betrayed him, so the tension and enemies-to-lovers vibes are HOT and kept me engrossed.
Laura Thalassa is a great author who has written many other works I've enjoyed, and this book did not disappoint! I look forward to the next in the series.
I don’t have the words to describe just how perfect and MAGICAL this book was. This did not feel like a book, it felt like I was in the world watching everyone unfold.
Bewitched is the first book in the series, and boy did it start off with a bang. Selene has a goal, and that is to get into the Henbane Coven, there’s just one problem, she is missing two thing. When she goes after those two things, she never expected to run into Memnon.
Memnon, boy do I love him! He confuses Selene for his wife and every time he spoke I was on the floor! This man has my whole heart! I just loved him. When Memnon and Selene are together, my kindle was ON FIRE!!!
I will not go into details because this book needs to be read and enjoyed. But I will say that I was hooked from the very first sentence. This is THE BOOK! The book of THE YEAR! My first book my Laura and she is now stu k with me as a reader! I wish I could give this book 5 stars because it truly deserves them all! Now, I will be in my room waiting impatiently for the next book in this series!!
I would like to thank NetGalley, Publishers and Laura Thalassa for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance. I liked it very very much!
Selene is a witch that all the time she performes magic a part of her memory disappear. But this doesn't stop her fom wanting to enter the prestigious school for whitches: the Hebane Coven. To get in is not easy though. She must complete a quest and find her familiar and while trying to do all that, she wakes up a man, Memnon, whom believes Selene is his wife and want venegance against her. And while back home, there are murders all over Selene.
The FMC is really though. Nothing can stop her from getting what she wants. And she is funny as well too! I laughed a lot reading this book. What I like from the book of this Author is that there is a very strong friendship between women, that nothing breaks it and that they are always there for each other.
Also there is spice and a MMC that is hot and strong as well!
This book ends with a cliffanger and I'm so disappointed that I can't read the second book as well right now! XD

⚜️ Book Title - Bewitched
⚜️ Author - Laura Thalassa
⚜️ Rating - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
⚜️ Some Genre/Themes/Tropes: Adult Fiction, Romance, Fantasy and Who did this to you?
I received an advanced reader copy (ARC) of this book via NetGalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. This is my honest review.
I absolutely love Laura Thalassa’s writing so as soon as I saw this ARC available, I really wanted to read it. Laura can weave incredible, unique and intriguing stories. As for this story, it definitely didn’t let me down. The concept was very interesting and entertaining throughout.
Unfortunately there were a few things that left me feeling a bit confused which was why I rated this four stars instead of five. As for example, I don’t completely understand Selene’s drive to attend the coven. What are her options if she didn’t go? What is stopping her from pursuing her understanding of her abilities outside the coven? Are there laws against that? Is this dictated by a higher authority? Is this authority a monarch or a board of mystical beings or something else?
Also, as for Memnon (MMC), I honestly don’t know if he is a redeemable love interest. At this stage he is not a nice character and I don’t know why the FMC would want to stick around to be gaslighted and abused. But who knows, this could be a front or there could be things we don’t know till future books? So I’m still holding out hope.
I was left with a lot of questions when I finished, which I hope to get answers for in one of the following books. Till then, I would recommend this book to others and I will be waiting for the sequel or other books written by this author.
I want to say thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.
Note (How I rate): Three stars is a good, enjoyable read. Four is an excellent read and five is a comfort reads that lingers with me for life (very difficult to get but not impossible).
How come Laura Thalassa never disappoints, while creating new worlds and characters with awesome supernatural powers?
That must be the magic power she discovered at her Awakening. I wish I could poke into her head to find out all the stories she must be already spawning in there!
I just enjoy escaping into her universes so much!
The book, right. Let's honor it.
Bewitched is book number one of the Bewitched series.
It is set in today’s world, but with some people having supernatural powers that they best not use into the human world.
Selene Bowers is a witch freshly awakened to her powers and she longs to be accepted at Henbane Coven, a school for witches, so she can learn how to control them and not worry about using her magic in front of others.
Every spell demands a price to any witch or mage and Selene’s price is her memories. Every time she casts a spell, she loses a bit (or a lot) of her past. So she has learnt to rely on her sticky notes and diaries, to not forget important meetings and also significant events and people.
To enter Henbane Coven, Selene has to complete a quest, so she books a trip to South America where she finds drawn to an unexplicable force. She finds a presence in the forest that calls to her and her instinct tells her to free the Cursed, which is strangely easier than she thought. The sleeping man is obviously breathtakingly handsome and royally pissed at... Selene.
So all the mysteries start: who is Memnon? Why is Selene so drawn to him? Why does he call her "my Roxi"? Why does Memnon claim to seek revenge on Selene for past actions happened two millennia ago? And the list goes on....
So, the book was amazing. I am a great fan of Laura Thalassa and I am certainly biased here, but if you are in the romantic fantasy genre, I think most readers will agree with me.
Laura Thalassa's storytelling is gifted and... well, bewitching (as usual, after all, so nothing that hasn't been said for her other books).
The idea behind Bewitched is brilliant: the Awakening of Memnon and the memory losses of Selene is a fabulous mix, without even reading the book and knowing these two elements, you feel drawn into needing to know more. And the events play out splendidly.
I am not a fan of series, I don't like to read books with cliffhangers, but here there are so many things that can still happen, that I am glad that the story has been developed in more than one book. The main characters, their history and Selene's friends offer so many plot and personality developments that it is definitely worth the extra pages to make them justice.
The only two flaws for me (hence not the full five stars) it is that I found it a bit slow on the first part (the interactions between Memnon and Selene were getting a bit repetitive and I wasn't as drawn into the story as the second half of the book) and the school setting felt too faint (Selene is supposed to be there to study, and I did wonder where could she find the time to do all those things in between classes and homeworks. She fought so hard to get in and then so little is told about what she learnt and how she enjoyed her studies and the other students and teachers).
I loved the side characters (Sybil, Kane, Kasey, the pack, the school directress): they were explored little, as if lingering on the background brushing in sometimes, but I hope there will be more room for them in the next books. It would be sad to see Kane and Kasey fade away, without knowing how their side stories progressed.
I adored the "goddess" interjections: how clever! It also sounded so natural! I might even try it sometime: "for the love of the goddess, will you stop already?"
Great, great book. Thanks Laura Thalassa for another magical evasion.
Thank you NetGalley and Bloom Books for sending this book for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
Holy freaking panther whiskers Batman THIS BOOK got me in the TIGHTEST chokehold. I mean I should have known. Laura is an autobuy author for me. But she really outdid herself with this FIRE BOOK!

This book, y’all. Not only was it a kindle gripping page turner and I literally couldn’t stop reading…. But I also laughed my butt off at the jokes, gasped at the plot twistys, combusted over the steamy bits and screamed into the void at the ending as well. I felt all the emotions. ALL.
The story had so many incredible things to it, Laura really put her all in making this book. The magical journey Selene had to go on to get into this magical school she’s been dreaming about for years? Some interesting stuff happened. Long story short, she may have accidentally woke a sleeping male up. And he’s hot as shite ok. He’s also really mad at her lmaoo. Swears she is his wife, but Selene is like bro i don’t even know you like that.
So she rushes home when she can, bringing her new panther familiar she got on her magical journey and the school lets her in. Everything seems cool except pause, Memnon - hot and angry male? That she awoke? He FOLLOWED her. 👁️👄👁️
The stuff that happens next and throughout? WILD. Witches start getting 💀 and no one knows what’s happening!! Selene struggles with learning magic, losing memories, and dealing with Memnon’s crazy arse.
Look I was supposed to buddy read this, ok? I couldn’t stop myself and my poor reading buddy got left in the back bc I COULDNT PUT IT DOWN!!!! So good, to the very last page. Then I sat there speechless staring into the void thinking wtaf NOW I GOTTA WAIT FOR THE NEXT BOOK????! 🤣🤣🤣
All the stars, so freaking good. Y’all don’t sleep on this book. Laura truly outdid herself!!!

"You are the goddess I pray to...You're a f****** vengeful one too."
Bewitched is the first novel in the new adult paranormal romance series, Bewitched, which follows twenty year old Selene Bowers at she finds herself drawn into darker world of magic in her quest to join Henbane Coven, an academy of witches, and the consequences of said quest. Not only does she appear to awaken to a powerful entity but she also finds herself bound to him in ways she never imagined. Forces beyond her understanding are circling her and the magic she has so desperately wanted to build comes at a cost...her memories; and they may cost her her freedom as well.
Selene is a fresh and engaging character I had such a fun time reading from. Her perspective is unique in how she must accomodate for her loss of memories but she doesn't let that be a barrier. She is passionate and yearns to unravel more about her magic and I loved that dedication. It is a play on the unreliable narrator that I think was executed so well and still leaves you on the edge to the end.
Memnon won me over, hook line and sinker. He's been cursed for 2000 years and there's a reason...except he's also handsome, charming, possessive, and protective. He's a morally grey character that challenges Selene but he doesn't control her. He seems to enjoy challenging her (so much banter!) and I felt this dynamic really enriched the story. There is a love there that gripped me but there is history left unsaid that builds throughout. You can feel the loss and it makes the love oh so much more powerful.
I also want to note that Nero is the absolutely best side character. He has attitude, humour, love, and the best timing. He said no words throughout the novel but his actions spoke loudly...as did his purrs.
The novel does contain spice. I would place it at 2.5 spicy peppers out of 5 spicy peppers. There is foreplay that builds tension in this enemies to lovers romance that consumed me. I felt the rawness in Selene and Memnon's relationship played so well into the spice and it was well done and felt well integrated into the story. They are tied together in a way that takes your breath away but things are unresolved and it just tore me up so many times in the best ways.
"You are my queen, my empress, my wife. You are my Roxilana, the woman who awoke my magic and spoke to my mind before we ever met. You are my nemesis, who cursed me to endless sleep...And you are my Selene, my eternal soul mate, who woke me from it."
In terms of world we see smooth integration for readers but also a recognition of the vast space left unexplored. The use of history here had the history teacher in me squealing (make sure to read the author's note for details if you're curious!). There is so much left unsaid yet all you need for the time being is shared. I have so many questions and am desperate for answers and I felt the world building reflects the main female protagonist's lens. Selene's knowledge comes and gos as she is confronted with the gaps in her knowledge and memory and I felt this unique aspect to her and the magic system in general really brought this world alive. I felt this novel did such a good job laying a foundation for the world and I hope more answers are given in the next book.
The story itself held me tightly over the course of a day. I consumed it in two readings. I felt the pacing was effortless and smooth. There is tension and angst but also a heart-wrenching sweetness that stuck with me. The character relationships were strong and powerful and we got plenty of moments of them just being able to be to help endear us. Side characters were able to establish atmosphere and round out alongside the main characters. The action and plot progression is a combination of mystery and thriller that I felt complimented the mood of this book. I loved the twists, the highs and lows for the characters, and the ending had a cliffhanger that had me say, "oh...DAMN." For me, everything fell together with such ease.
Once again Laura Thalassa has proven her skills at creating character driven novels that keep you on the edge of your seat while also tugging at your heart. I loved Selene, Memnon, Nero, and the world growing here. I cannot wait for the next book to answer some of my many questions!
Thank you Bloom Books and Netgalley for the review.
Rated 3.5 Stars
I loved the premise of Bewitched. I loved that it had a The Mummy-esqueness to it. It was packed with action, mystery and so much more. I thought the world and magic were awesome. I liked the heroine, Selene. However, I wasn't a fan of the male protagonist. He was not a hero nor an antihero, dude was a straight up villain and while I sometimes have a soft spot for villains he was not one of them. If it was possible to go through the pages and do some damage to him I would have gladly done it. There was nothing redeemable about him in my opinion. There were moments where I thought he's not that bad but he'd shut that down. I wasn't a fan of his and the heroine's relationship. It was toxic and dysfunctional. All of that said I do want to see where the author is taking this especially after the way it ended. I am definitely looking forward to reading the sequel.
badass witches!!!!
fml what would I do without books about witches?!
I love love love love everything!
great storyline
amazing plots
wonderful characters
Perfect!
Wow. Bewitched is an absolute masterclass in witch/demon romance. M.A.S.T.E.R.C.L.A.S.S.
I am utterly bewitched (😂) by this book. I’m a huge fan of Thalassa’s previous works and this one might just be the best I’ve read yet.
It’s fast paced, the characters are *chefs kiss* and Memnon…. Oh my word - Memnon 🥵 Move over Des, we have a bee book boyfriend in town. Memnon is so unapologetically morally grey. You love him one second. The next you remember he’s a badass, ruthless king who doesn’t play by rules that have taken over society in the last 2000 years.
The rich Easter eggs of historical facts that are sprinkled throughout this book, and the authors note, had my history-loving-heart fluttering.
I need all the special editions of this book. All the fan art. All the hype. This book was amazing.
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for the chance to read and review early. What. A. Book.
I really wanted to like this book. Unfortunately it didn't resonate with me.. The main reason being a lack of connection with the main characters.
I received a complimentary copy of this ebook and this is my honest review.
AHHHHHH FUCK ME!! I wanted to scream throughout the whole book.😍😭
I entered this world with high expectations and it delivered. The world building was incredible. Set in the 21st century we meet Selena, a witch that when using her powers some memories fade, so to enter Henbane coven she must go on a quest and find her familiar. Througout that quest she uncovers something powerful, handsome, sexy, king of kings, scarred, tall, moody, possessive, Memnon. The man for real has my whole heart and is top one on my book boyfriends since right now! I loved seeing Memnon, although the book is only one pov we got to see some glimpses of how powerfull he his and another side althogether. I spent more than half of the book screamin for him (my mind is a bit questionable at this point). Selena was a bif of a surprise to me to be honest. I entered the book thinking she would be kinda of a week character and always doubting herself, when in reality shes not that at all! Shes powerfull, kinda, loyal, courageous, always heads in and her humour and witts really toped off. I loved seeing her development and just herself really. She made the whole book so interesting, funny and fully gripping (memnon helped too obviously. I couldnt put this book down adn if i could i wouldnt cause it was one of the best reads i had this year. Trully i cant wait for the next book, and if i had it i wouldve been reading it immidiatly. I want to cry at how longh i will have to wait, cause this one isnt even out 😭😭😭
Laura Thalassa is an autobuy author for me, and when I saw she was starting a new series in The Bargainer universe, I was SO EXCITED. And, believe me, Bewitched DELIVERED. Wow, it was a wild ride, but I'm completely obsessed. I have TONS of questions circling in my head, and I absolutely cannot wait to see where things go from here.
Selene is a witch with a serious problem: anytime she uses her magic, she loses some of her memories. While on a magical quest in an effort to get into her dream coven, she is mysteriously drawn to a locked tomb and opens it, inadvertently awakening "Memnon the Cursed." Memnon seems to remember her VERY well, but she has no idea who he is. While Selene tries to figure out things with Memnon, several of the witches in Selene's coven are murdered. Though she remembers almost nothing about the events, it looks like she might be connected to them. Is she? Is Memnon? You will SCREAM trying to figure out what is going on.
I LOVED Selene. She reminds me of a C.N. Crawford or K.F. Breene heroine in that she's a little goofy, very sweet, and absolutely hilarious despite her memory troubles. I highlighted a bunch of her dialogue because it was so funny. Memnon reminds me a lot of Des from the Bargainer series but with more edge - think ancient warlord vibes. Selene's banter with him was also *chef's kiss," especially because he remembers her and doesn't. And the tension! WOW. This book is a slow burn and there's just a taste of spice, but I was on the edge of my seat waiting for it to happen. Definitely anticipating more in the next book.
The story is fast paced with spooky/witchy vibes that I LOVED. As the first in a series, there are a TON of questions still unanswered, and I am DYING now. Plus, it ends on a massive cliffhanger that literally had my jaw dropping. The one negative part of receiving an ARC is waiting longer for the next book, but you better believe I'll be snatching it the MOMENT I have the opportunity. Thank you so much Laura and NetGalley for the opportunity to read Bewitched, one of my favorites of the year so far!
Wow. I was completely blindsided with how much this book was going to consume me once I started it.
I received an arc from netgalley for my honest review.
I give the book a 4.75 stars, but I know in a few months I’ll still be obsessing and it would be quickly 5 starts because the little issues I had won’t matter.
First of all, the main character was really enjoyable. She made me laugh and i loved her determination. She was sassy, strong and fierce. I cheered for her the entire time.
Our terrifying love interest, I’m just as messed up as Selene about him. But my goddess, this is a whole new enemies to lovers spice that I experienced lol. I have never been so * torn * by a love interest.
So many tangled webs to get out of…. I can’t wait for the next book. And with that cliffhanger… hopefully it’s not too long 😅😅😅
Only issues I had was sometimes dialogue dragged in scenes… When she would be setting up scene or describing things but it won’t matter in the end. I’d rather that then getting lost in a scene.
I really enjoyed this and has me more intrigued about the other books in this world. I had preordered this already as a paperback before I got the Ebook, and I’ll be happy to have a physical copy on its drop date.
I'd like to preface this by saying I haven't read the Bargainer series, or actually anything written by Laura Thalassa before. I came into this with a very neutral expectation (I heard the Bargainer series was good, and the Four Horsemen series not so much). That's to say, I didn't expect a literary masterpiece, nor did I expect a dumper fire.
For the first 25% of the book, I was disappointed. Everything happened so, so fast. It truly felt like it was a speed-run. That absolutely could've been twice as long. The premise was interesting there, it just happened too quickly.
The remaining 75% had much better pacing. I had a general understanding of where everything was going and the plot of the book (a good thing!) and yet I still was guessing at smaller details (a really good thing!!). Books that you can't guess at all usually means that the plot is illogical. However, unless it's purely a rom-com or a cozy fantasy, I really don't want a book that has no surprises. The balance, especially for the genre, was struck really well.
Very modern language is used in this, which isn't shocking because it's a modern setting, but it did take time to get used to. It left me wondering how it might age in a decade or so. In particular, Selene saying "cool beans" was very off-putting, because it's definitely out-dated already (I'm 22 and I heard that mostly in my freshman/sophomore year, so there's that).
I liked Selene. I didn't adore her, but as far as female main characters she was inherently very likeable. She was a young woman who just wanted to accomplish some not-outlandish life goals in-spite of her memory loss. And though she viewed this as a hindrance to her life, she accepted her disability as part of her, acknowledged it made her more resilient, and didn't want to be "healed". She was just like other girls, just wanted to be like other girls, but didn't want to sacrifice the difficult things about herself to life a normal life. And that was really endearing.
Memnon... Memnon I desperately wanted to slap. I believe that was the point, but his existence desperately enraged me. When he got on the page, I wanted him OFF!
All in all, 3.75/5 stars. I'm looking forward to the second book and I hope Memnon rots!
4.5/5!!!! Thank you NetGalley, Laura Thalassa, and Bloom Books for the ARC, all opinions are my own.
Bewitched follows 20-year-old witch Selene Bowers who desperately wishes to be a part of Henbane Coven, essentially a university for witches. However, Selene has been denied multiple times, most likely because whenever she uses magic, her memories become devoured one by one. In order to beef up her application and prove herself, Selene must go on an impressive quest where she can connect with her powers, only instead she finds herself entranced by a sultry voice calling to her, asking for help. Unbeknownst to Selene, that voice belongs to Memnon, who believes Selene to be his long-lost wife upon awakening. As if that's not enough of an issue, witches are being murdered at Henbane Coven and because of her memory loss, Selene starts looking increasingly suspicious to the magical police force. Between Memnon, the murders, and her memory loss, Selene finds herself caught in a dangerous web.
I had so much fun reading this book, I laughed out loud multiple times. Selene has such a funny personality but she is also incredibly determined, brave, and strong. I also love love love Memnon, he was a delicious mix of angry and adoring and it was absolutely perfect. I enjoyed seeing how Selene never really was down on herself about her memory loss, and how strong she was despite it. I also really liked how this book was filled with all different kinds of supernatural creatures rather than just witches but my favorite was how each witch's magic had its own unique color/hue, it created really beautiful imagery. The magic system was super easy to understand so there were no boring explanations or anything which was really nice and made for an easy breezy, fun read. Overall, I can't wait for the second because the ending!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How dare we end on a cliffhanger?!?!
After loving Thalassa's horsemen series, I RAN to get access to this eARC.
With frustrating MCs, a meandering plot, and an undeveloped romance, Bewitched left me feeling VERY underwhelmed.
I was immediately intrigued by the blurb of a young woman opening a tomb and finding not only a king, but a soulmate.
However, despite a fascinating premise, the execution left much to be desired.
-The main characters felt immensely underdeveloped. Selene felt naive and unprepared. Her memory loss made for an interesting perspective, but not enough for me to care about her, especially given how much of simp she was for Memnon who was nothing but cruel. Memnon isn't a fun MMC. I understand this is an enemies to lovers situation with a morally grey MMC, but we get little understanding of Memnon. I don't empathize with him and I'm not rooting for him or Selene or their romance.
- I understand this is meant to be book one of a series as it ends in a cliffhanger. However, much of plot feels under developed with important moments and side plots still not explained. It focused so much on Memnon & Selene that every aspect of world building and plot suffered. It left me frustrated and resentful of the "romance".
- I wish we got more of the side characters, more of the world, more of Roxi and Memnon's past, and more of the other main guy that we probably shouldn't want to be with Selene but couldn't help but want her to choose!
Unfortunately, this one just didn't work for me.
Thank you NetGalley and Bloom Books for access to a free e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
