Boy's Abyss had me at the edge of my seat from start to finish, and once I reach the last page, I couldn't help but gasp out loud. In just about 200 pages, Roy Minenami establishes a complex puzzle against the backdrop of familial obligations and small town secrets. Minenami's art is expressive, showing the character's full range of emotions with simple, yet skilled linework. Although this story will not be for everyone, I'd recommend it to fans of Inio Asano (Goodnight Punpun, Downfall) and Haro Aso (Alice in Borderland, Zom 100).

This opening volume leaves me with plenty of intrigue, but it's tone is very bleak. There is bullying, dubious consent, and talk of a suicide pact. Granted, none of these factors is necessarily a knock against it. I think its tone serves an important purpose. Though, considering this is an on going series and not a one shot, I do wonder where it's going to go. Is there an up or is it going to keep spiraling downward? This series is a ride, that's for sure.

Thanks NetGalley and Viz Media for this arc!

I'm not really sure how to think about this, tbh. The art was really well done, but the story was pretty depressing and, questionable? We know Nagi is 20, but how old is Reiji?! I feel really bad for him, and really uncomfortable that he and Nagi have a suicide pact after knowing each other for a day, and sleeping together? Like I said the art was pretty but the storyline was definitely not my thing 😬

The art was nice and I appreciate the atmosphere/vibes it created, but unfortunately the plot was completely not my cup of tea. It was way too depressing and not rewarding enough to make up for it. I didn't feel that invested in the characters either. I'm sure there are manga readers who would like this, though.
