I got this bookinexchange for an honest review.
I read this one in one sitting, while waiting for my appointments. Basically, I really like about this poetry. It was written just like how daily conversations were made, so I found it pretty relatable to my life. It was told about love and lose and the pandemic which I found very rare for an author to write about that topic. Also, writing about the losing the loved ones during a pandemic was so hard that some people hope to never experience such thing. Those situation were well-described in this book, I would definitely recommend this book to people.
Ocean In Your Lungs is a captivating and beautiful exploration of womanhood and humanity, broken down into four chapters. This is the author’s debut collection.
From the effects of Covid, the experiences of love, pain, and loss, women’s rights and regret, the full spectrum of emotion is on display in a brave and vulnerable way.
I loved the line from “A Beautiful Mess,” “Sometimes/ Love’s intentions/ Though faultless/ Come smudged.”
Both affecting and abating, Ocean In Your Lungs is a collection not to miss.
Thanks to NetGalley and Zainab Omotayo Raji for the opportunity to read and review this work.
I've enjoyed every single poem included in this collection of poems... The poems felt raw, genuine and compelling all at once!
I loved how the poems explored different aspects of life : Motherhood, womanhood, mental health issues, and I was even more surprised to see that some poems tackled the Pandemic as a theme. The writing flows beautifully and each and every poem had me experiencing a cacophony of emotions.
I will most def recommend it to my fellow bookish friends.
Rating poetry is a challenge. It’s so personal and diverse. Who has the right to rate that?
Starting with the title, this collection was speaking my language. I suppose a few didn’t resonate with me personally, but that’s what’s beautiful about poetry and especially collections. Some cut deep, some stir up reflections, then you’ll run into one that throws you off course and the next takes you on a whole new adventure in your mind and soul. That’s what poetry should do, or at least what I look for in it.
It’s wild that so few words can give you such depth and show you who someone is. It’s a true art to express entire aspects of your soul without writing an entire detailed story. Zainab Omotayo Raji expresses waves of emotions and processes on these pages. I hope that more collections follow.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and of course the author (a true poet) for allowing me the opportunity to review. I’ll definitely be adding a physical copy to my collection!
I really enjoyed this book.
Most of the poetry was really beautiful and the poems themselves had a good length. I enjoyed the choice of words and themes in this.
Sometimes it read a bit forced or awkward, but mostly the flow was good.
I also liked how it was structured.
Sadly, the collection was a bit short, but I look forward to hopefully reading more of this author in the future.
