I did not vibe with this one unfortunately. The plot moved too slowly for me and I kept putting it aside because I was bored with the prose.

Simon’s cruel father tells him he will help him set up a horse breeding business if he agrees to move the village near their home elsewhere. Simon knows how to organize and command from his army days. He has not planned for Pen who is trying to help the villagers accept this new change. Many secrets come out and Pen and Simon must help each other cope with and accept them. I received an ARC from NetGalley and Oliver Heber Books for my honest review.

Battle weary Captain Simon Harcourt returns to England to breed horses and his father Earl of Ravenscroft promises to finance the stables if Simon razes the estate village. Penelope Waverly, who is in dire financial circumstances, stands in his way.

He hates the village. She loves it. And there’s a mysterious connection to Simon’s missing mother.

I loved the writing style and the characters were complex but I found the pacing sooo slow. I kept leaving and coming back to it. The book could be half as long. There were unnecessary subplots and excessive contemplation. That wouldn’t stop me from reading the next book in the series. I’d just just make sure it wasn’t 400 pages first.
