I liked this but it's marketed as a romcom and it's not. I feel like it's more about women's fiction and grief.
I received this book as an arc from netgalley. Im not going to lie i requested this book based on the cover. Didnt really know anything going into this book other than a girl on a cruise. To be honest its just an okay story. I will probably forget about it by the end of the week. This book is based arouns a teen girl who lost her older brother who she found dead. And het parents drag her and younger brother on a cruise. She always has to have everything together.
Rising high school senior Olivia is frustrated when her parents derail her carefully color-coordinated summer plans to pursue an academic project with a family cruise–how is she supposed to take time out to have fun when she wants to get a perfect SAT score, get into the perfect college, and become the perfect doctor so she can advocate for and maybe even solve the heart attack that arrested her older brother’s life unexpectedly at age seventeen? Olivia’s younger siblings have no awareness there even WAS another brother, and this fact makes a light-hearted cruise vacation teen romance anything but, as it delves into family dynamics and frankly, untreated trauma, in between details of exotic ports of call and peer pressure to flirt and drink.
The writing is sensitive and nuanced and the situation believable. The grief is balanced with the glamorous setting and the forced proximity is what ultimately allows the family to have the conversations they need to move on. Olivia’s resistance and then succumbing to hanging out with the other youth on board the ship, and developing a relationship with fun, sweet Sebastian takes up equal plot time. The “shipping it” theme is enhanced with celebrity romance speculation as well as the drama with the circle of new friends, fandom and 21st century digital culture and media. Like a cruise, the story is quick-paced and comes to it’s inevitable end.
I received a free advance reader’s review copy of #WeShipIt via #NetGalley courtesy of #HarperCollins.
Unfortunately, I just don’t think this story was for me. It was a cute YA with an interesting plot, but I felt it fell short in areas & I struggled to maintain interested. I found the characters unlikable & irritating sadly.
Thanks to NetGalley & the publisher for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Olivia is an overachiever who wants to spend her spring break researching. Her family wants her to go on a cruise instead and the only reason she agrees is because one of the stops is a country she promised to visit with her brother. He passed away 6 years prior and she sees this as her opportunity to honor him and continue her research. I liked the premise of the book but I read another book with a somewhat similar plot (Wishlists and Roadtrips) this fell a little flat for me.
What a wonderful story. It hooked me from the start, and I loved every page. The imagery was great and made me want to go on a summer cruise.
We Ship It by Lauren Kay is a fun and heartfelt young adult romance. Olivia, the main character, has her life meticulously planned out. Enter a summer cruise, the last thing she ever wanted, and a cute British boy named Aiden. This unexpected adventure throws Olivia's plans off course, but in the best way possible. We Ship It combines the thrill of a meet-cute with the awkwardness of first love. The story also tackles themes of grief and self-discovery. If you're looking for a romantic comedy with a dash of coming-of-age feels, then We Ship It is a great choice.
This is such a fun summer romcom. I loved the setting and plot of this book. Definitely recommend picking it up.
Overall, it is a cute summer book. a lot of it doesn't really make sense. A theater kid afraid of looking uncool in front of others is just not fitting. The writing just seem weird and cringe at times.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for this ARC for an exchange for an honest review.
Wonderful book, had fun reading it.
I'm so sad that this book didn't come anywhere close to my expectations. I expected this to be a light beach read and it was truly anything but. There were so many heavy topics discussed and I'm not sure they were all done the best way possible. It was just not an enjoyable experience for me.
nothing i love more than a vacation romance and this was so fun! exactly what i love and need in a cutie little rom com. the ship vibes were so great and i can’t wait to reread this in the summer time!
This story was fun to read but I have a few issues with the mc being pressured to drink. Overall this was not really the story I was expecting
This was requested when I first found out about NetGalley and I had requested so many ARCs that I could not get to all of them before they were archived. I really wanted to get to this one, as it seemed interesting. If I can find this somewhere for a reasonable price, I will try to get it! I am giving this book three stars, as I don't want to give it a good or bad rating, since I did not get to it.
first off this cover is perfect and instantly made me want to pick this one up ASAP. This book was cute and enjoyable if a little simple and surface level. The character growth with Bolivia was amazing and probably my favorite part of the overall story.
I like it when a book billed as romance surprises me by being something a little different, and this one definitely succeeded in that. I was never quite sure where it was going, and I was delighted to find out where the main character ended up, which I hadn't anticipated at all despite the many hints dropped. I did see where things were going with the reveal about the character's brother, probably earlier than most would have caught on because of its links to my own life, and I greatly, GREATLY appreciated the author's treatment of the condition discussed. She did a wonderful job of capturing the shame, denial, uncertainty, and betrayal that can be wrapped up in that condition, and she portrayed the reality of it -- for those directly involved and the way others perceive it -- in a very true-to-life way that was painful in its accuracy. Finally, she did an excellent job of portraying the twists of grief and how it affects us, and I was grateful for the way she allowed the protagonist to gradually stop hiding in her "future" and start to explore and experiment and discover who she is and how she fits into her life and into real life in general.

This book was written so well. I love how Olivia handles the death of her brother including finding out the secret information so well. She is such a relatable character. I liked the setting of the cruise ship which you don’t see often.
The plot was well-developed and cute, perfect for a YA book! There were a few places I felt it was just too rushed but overall it was a fun read and I loved the personalities of each character.
The standout in this novel was the setting - what a fun way to make this story unique! This was a really cute read, but it took me longer than normal to get into it It wasn't immediately compelling, but picked up swiftly about a third of the way through. I'd recommend it for a high school audience.
