I received a copy of this book through Netgalley. This is my honest review.
This book was selected as part of a Top Ten Tuesday roulette game where I had my kids pick books that they would want to read for me to try and get approved for. So this isn't a book I would typically have selected for myself. The story is told from the perspective of the three Peach children, so the language is very juvenile and fairly simple, with explanations of words that maybe stretch the vocabularies of the expected readers. We rotate through their perspectives, with each kid getting a chapter before moving on to the next Peach.
Each kid had different interests and strengths that ultimately helped them in the Frozen Olympic event the Frozen Hotel put on for the contest winners. This doesn't mean they always won the competitions, but they certainly gave it their all. I wasn't particularly invested in the story until right near the end, and even then it was really just a passing interest, but I'm also not the target audience.
This would be a good book for a younger reader, or for reading a chapter before bed as the chapters are on the short side, and each chapter changes perspective so every night you'd have a different character's perspective to read through. But ultimately this book was mostly a bust for me personally, so I give it 3.17 out of 5 stars.
This novel is third in a series about the Peach family. Dad and Herb, Freddy and Lucy have navigated several adventures and traumas, including the loss of their mom, and now have an opportunity to visit the world-famous Ice Hotel in Sweden. Here, the family learns more about running a bed and breakfast, and they meet families like them from across the US. Each child also discovers their talents and learns new skills as they compete in the Frozen Olympics.
I didn't read the previous books in this series and didn't need to in order to understand the story. The author does a great job of incorporating the backstory. But I wish I had read the previous books because this family is delightful.
I also appreciate that the author includes tough topics like grief, insecurity and competitiveness. She normalizes these common challenges many kids face.
The author also explains big words like liability. The definitions flow, though, and feel natural.
I can't wait to read more books about the Great Peach Experiment. I'd read more books by this author, too.
I have enjoyed Erin Downing’s Great Peach Experiment series very much but this one is the best so far! Lucy, Freddy, and Herb are endearing and very realistic kids who, with their father, have crossed the continent in a pie-making food truck, renovated a dilapidated home into a lucrative Bed and Breakfast, and have now won a trip to Sweden’s Ice Hotel with other B&B operators for a special visit focused on helping them boost their business. The focus is on Herb, the youngest of the Peach kids, and he is the catalyst for the final outcome. But Lucy and Freddy have great experiences as well, and even Great Aunt Lucinda gets more time on the page and she is a hoot. Downing’s descriptions of the hotel, snow/ice-focused activities and more are fabulous and would provide much material for ELA teachers in areas of sensory language, visualization, and literary devices. And readers will ALL want to hop a plane for Sweden as soon as they close the book. To that end, the author’s note does make it clear that not everything is based on the actual Ice Hotel and surrounding areas and details a few of the differences. Outstanding series for grades 4-6 and all should be on libraries’ “first choice” lists. Representation: the Peach family presents as Caucasian but race of other characters is unclear; one other winning family has two dads. Text is free of profanity, sexual content, and violence.
I LOVED the Peach Experiment #3! The Peach family is going to Sweden's Ice Hotel (on my bucket list!) and the adventures continue, from the packing preparations to the airplane to the Ice Hotel -- readers will love this story.
I received an electronic ARC from Holiday House through NetGalley.
The third book in this series continues the humorous and tender story of this family. Freddy entered them in a sweepstakes and they won a trip to Sweden to stay in their IceHotel. While this should be a wonderful time together as a family, readers learn more about their individual struggles. In particular, Lucy gets caught up in her competitive spirit and misses some of the joy. In the end, they figure out how important this time together is regardless of any other events going on.
I appreciate how the author captures the scenery and helps readers feel they to are sleeping on ice beds or leading a dog sled team or performing Shakespeare on stage. This family will touch hearts as they continue to heal after their mom's death and find new memories and ways to be a family of four.
I loved this newest Peach family installment! This book revolves around a trip to Sweden’s ice hotel - full of adventures. I love this endearing, wholesome family- looking forward to reading more!
The Great Peach Experiment Series is one of my favorite middle grade series, and the third book's setting is right up my alley. I enjoyed seeing new sides of the kids as they explore the freezing terrain and watching them explore their various interests. The plot is engaging and the shenanigans are fun! My favorite parts was the journey to the ice hotel and the descriptions of it and what it's like to work and live in such a cold climate.
However, a bit of the magic was lost in this book. It feels like the family have less moments together and the side characters in this book couldn't quite liven up the pages in the same way the side characters did in the previous books. I would've loved to see the kids bonding more with Aunt Lucinda instead of their dad and to have that one emotional moment that's there in the other two books.
It also felt as if Lucy received the short end of the stick as her brothers have clear interests while she's mostly focused on her competition with another girl in this book. It's not particularly fun to read about and I think there was a missed opportunity there for the two girls to bond in a more meaningful way.
That being said, the book was still enjoyable to read. I loved the drawings, as always, and the dogs were adorable. The descriptions of the landscape, the weather, and the various competitive stages the Peach family has to go through in this B&B contest were pretty fun for the most part though I think the competitors and shenanigans could've been even funnier.
Overall, it's still a good book in a heart-warming series about a family picking themselves up. I'm absolutely going to pick up the next book in the series!
I have been a big fan of the Peach family and their adventures since book one in The Great Peach Experiment series. Each time a new story comes out I can hardly contain my excitement! I was so happy to dive back into their world with an advanced copy of book 3, the frozen peaches. This new wintery, icy, setting brought interesting adventures and events for the Peach family and I enjoyed every minute of being invited into it. From winning the sweepstakes to begin their journey to participating in the Frozen 0lympics in efforts to be declared the Frozen Best, there is lots of fun to be had, including snow building, ice carving, sledding, winter hikes, sleeping in Ice Hotels, the Northern Lights, and more. There is of course some competition and a few obstacles to overcome. Most of all, the characters are endearing as always, and the book is filled with heart and hope. I also spy a recipe I want to try, so that’s always fun, too! The Frozen Peaches does not disappoint!
Who doesn’t love the Peach family? You’re going to have a delightfully chilly time with them this time!
Thank you to the publisher and Net-Galley for the e-ARC of this middle grade novel.
The Peach family is back! This third installment of the the Great Peach Experiment sends the Peaches to the Ice Hotel in Sweden. This time around, they're competing as a family as they learn to dogsled, carve ice, and enjoy the cold! I liked this one and think kids will love all the elements surrounding the Ice Hotel. It wasn't my favorite of the series, but I did enjoy it, and think kids will be excited for another book in the series.
“Frozen Peaches” is the 3rd middle grade novel in “The Great Peach Experiment” series by Erin Soderberg Downing.
I received an eARC from NetGalley and Pixel+Ink. This book will be released on April 4, 2023.
“Frozen Peaches” takes the Peach family to Sweden after Freddy enters a contest to travel and stay at the Ice Hotel. The family experiences many adventures through a competition with other sweepstakes winning families including: dogsledding, ice carving, snowperson building, a cooking competition, and sledding.
This book was exactly what I have grown to love and expect in the “The Great Peach Experiment” series. I was so excited when it appeared in NetGalley!
Best news- a “The Great Peach Experiment” book 4 is in the works… “Duck Duck Peach”!
I recommend without hesitation “Frozen Peaches” and the entire “The Great Peach Experiment” series for middle grade readers.
