The women of Selling Sunset haven't resorted to killing each other yet, but if they did, it might look a lot like To Die For. The producers of that show might consider bringing Lisa Gray on for the sharp way she communicates the competitive but glamourous world of high-priced, high-stakes California real estate. What a fun trip!
This book threw in lots of suspects, but it wasn't immediately clear who the body in the pool belonged to (at least to me). It had a lot of before and after time jumps, but I managed not to get confused. I didn't see the final twist coming either. I thought everything was known, then..........(no spoilers)!!
I really liked this book! I'm a Lisa Gray fan through and through - loved her Jessica Shaw series and loved this book. The characters were easy to relate to. It was a fun easy read, but what you expected was not as it was. There were quite the twists!
Who wouldn't want to be Andi Hart with a $50 million dollar Malibu listing to sell! A murder master set in the Richie Rich of Los Angeles. I love how this book was written, each chapter was from a different point of view and Lisa Gray did a great job at summing it up where all stories tied together. Recommended!!
thank you to netgalley and to the publisher for this review copy.
a great thriller with a big prize
Thank you to Lisa Gray, Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the ARC!
Just how far would you go for a million dollars? When five real estate agents are given the listing for a beach house in Malibu, they are faced with just that question, because whoever sells the house will make a million dollars in commission. Each agent has their own reason for wanting that money (and honestly, who wouldn’t?!) and when push comes to shove, their behavior becomes a little unethical to say the least. But a million dollar is at stake! The home is beautiful, modern, luxurious and the views are to die for. And at the brokers’ open house, there is actually someone dead in the pool! Has someone taken things too far for that million dollars or is there something more sinister going on here?
What an entertaining, character-driven mystery! Told in dual points of view, I enjoyed getting to know each character and learning their story. I found myself both laughing and shaking my head at some of the stunts they pulled to try to make each other look bad. I will say Verona was my favorite by far, she deserved every penny! The setting of LA and the glamorous beach house added to the scene too. This domestic thriller was truly a story of rich people behaving badly and I was here for every bit of it! The final twist was one I didn’t see coming. I loved Lisa Gray’s previous novel, “The Dark Room”; this has solidified her as an auto-buy author for me. She is one not to miss! “To De For” releases August 1, 2023. This review will be shared to my instagram blog (@books_by_the_the_bottle) shortly.
I found myself completely drawn into To Die For. How far would you go for a million dollars? This is the question faced by five Hollywood real estate agents as they compete to find a buyer for a Malibu beach house. They all not only want, but need the money and as the competition hots up it seems some are determined to do whatever it takes to win. This novel features secrets, lies, grudges and a dead body. It’s compulsive reading that I couldn’t put down. Thank you to NetGalley, Amazon Publishing UK and the author for the chance to review.
Never hearing of this Author before I dived right in to this book. I found it to be a page turner with short sharp chapters. These chapters were told in PIV of six people, told before and after the incident. However, the storyline was easy to follow and I didn’t get muddled with any of the characters.
I liked the way the storyline panned out and the way it finished off nicely at the end. I didn’t like any of the characters though, although that was probably to be expected. Would you be a nice person if you could earn a million pounds against others?
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this ebook in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to Net-Galley and Amazon Publishing UK for the e-arc of To Die for.
If you enjoy;
Million dollar listing
Selling Sunset
Then you will enjoy this book! I rated this book 3.5 stars, I enjoyed it but it didn’t have the twists and turns that I enjoy in a good Mystery/Thriller. I loved that the book was written in multiple character POV’s and it was actually easy to follow along and remember each character. Definitely a great summer beach/lake read.
‘You Can Die’ asks the question what would you do for a big pay check? Five Hollywood real estate agents are tasked by their boss to find a buyer for a fancy $50 million Malibu beach home. Whoever does, gets a cool million dollar bonus. Let the competition begin between the five real estate agents. And boy does it. Talk about ruthless, the epitome of the stereotype of a real estate agent. And each of the five agents has a very specific reason they need that bonus.
But when a dead body is found during an open house, things start to take a dark turn. Is one of the real estate agents a murderer or are the agents about to become victims themselves?
I’m a big fan of Lisa Gary, I enjoyed her ‘Jessica Shaw’ private investigator series, so I was really pleased to be approved for an ARC for her new book. But I struggled a bit with ‘You Can Die’. The multiple povs were confusing and hard to keep track of. I needed a good chunk of uninterrupted reading time to be able to really get into the story and understand what was going on and with who.
Overall, I found ‘You Can Die’ to be an interesting, frustrating but intriguing murder/mystery read. 3.5 stars from me.
Money money money, must be funny, in the rich man’s world… 🎶
To Die For is a riveting mystery thriller that takes a classic Agatha Christie scenario - a bunch of rich people all have motives for a murder committed in a luxurious mansion - and sets it in contemporary Malibu. I’ve read and enjoyed the author’s Jessica Shaw series, wasn’t so keen on her other stand-alone, but liked the sound of this one. Most of the characters are deliciously awful, but she does a good job with the twists and I didn’t guess the victim or the perpetrator until they were revealed.
Andi Hart is a young real estate broker agent hoping to set up on her own after problems at the swish agency she currently works for. Then her employers reveal they have been commissioned to sell a 50 million dollar beachfront property, and the successful agent will receive one million dollars. Suddenly the gloves are off, and each of Andi’s colleagues is desperate to win the prize - but will they resort to murder?
I started out despising almost all of the characters here - they claim to have money worries, yet drive ridiculous cars and most of their problems are self inflicted. The story is told from various perspectives, including Aribo, the detective leading the investigation - about the only sympathetic personality in it, so I hope Gray brings him back in future books. We don’t learn who has been killed until quite far into the book, although the various possibilities are gradually eliminated. This plot device has been used a lot in recent crime fiction, but it was well done here and I didn’t feel cheated by the various reveals. Overall, an entertaining holiday thriller with a satisfying ending.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the ARC. I am posting this honest review voluntarily.
To Die For is published on August 1st.
A million dollars at stake drive people crazy. I loved how the characters are portrayed in this story. Money can buy you a lot but it can't buy you happiness which they will soon find out the hard way.
How far would you go to make a million dollars? Me, I am not sure but certainly I would not be stooping to the level of these Real Estate Agents!
To Die For is set in Sunny California. I really enjoyed the scenic descriptions of the book, could almost feel the humidity upon me while in the dead of winter here in Canada. lol
Saint Realty agents Andi, Hunter, Krystal, Myles & Verona are tasked with a huge assignment. Sell a 50 million dollar beachfront home in Malibu. The agent who sells the home will make a one million dollar commission. No sooner than the task is given, do the dollar signs start floating in everyones eyes. What a difference it could make to each of them for their own reasons.
The book took me a bit to settle in to because there were so many POV's - not just the Real Estate agents but the detectives as well and let's throw in a random POV later as well for good measure. The POV's told each of their stories, their secrets and their need for the one million dollars.
At an invite only Broker's Open House to show off the immaculate mansion, a body is discovered in the pool and there is a murder to solve. We read about the events leading up to the open house party and how some agents are not beneath being vindictive and malicious to try and get the sale.
Overall, the book was an attention holder. I liked the fact the setting and characters were a bit different. I did not see the end twist coming which is unusual for me! lol
A new author for me. Although I do have a book on my kindle by this author - I haven't read yet. Thanks to net galley for this free read. I really enjoyed this fast paced murder mystery which takes place in the world of the 'realtor' selling very expensive properties in Malibu and Beverly Hills areas. It is literally a cut throat industry! I read this book really quickly as I needed to know who had committed the murder. It was a great plot with lots of twists and turns and revelations that I did not expect.
I will be having a look at that book I have on the kindle for more great reading!
I really wanted to love this one or at least like it, but unfortunately it wasn’t for me. It all seemed to convoluted and I didn’t care enough about the characters to finish.
To Die For by Lisa Gray is a surprisingly great book! There are numerous plot lines running through the story - some revealed early and some at the very end. There are good guys (and girls) and there are very evil ones too. A fast, fun read with lots of twists and turns.
Thanks to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing UK for the opportunity to read this ARC.
This was truly a rollercoaster ride! Who knew the real-estate business was so deadly!
The mystery, and plot, build up slowly with alternate perspectives. Took a few chapters to keep everyone straight, but not difficult. There are a lot of twists and turns, a few WOW moments, and a clever ending. Lots of little sub stories that completely enhance the plot. This was another great story by Lisa Gray! Highly recommend.
I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Loved loved loved this book! I was hooked from the first page. This book kept me up late at night because I couldn’t stop reading! Filled with money, drama, and revenge. Highly recommend. Thanks NetGalley
This is perfect if you just finished binging Selling Sunset and you need something juicy to sink your teeth into. this is such a guilty pleasure book.
A dead body is found in a swimming pool at an open house and the suspects all work in the luxury real estate business in Malibu. The story revolves around the star agent Andi Hart and along with her colleagues, they compete to lock the sale of a $50m house with a $1m commission for whoever sells it. The characters are well written and in classic whodunnit style, all are possible suspects. The backdrop of glitzy Malibu is authentic. To Die For is engaging and no doubt will be another bestseller for Lisa Gray.
I really enjoyed reading this book but the amount of points of view was overwhelming and confusing. It's a bit too much.
While I couldn't relate to any of the characters, I loved getting to know them and discovering what they would do with the money they would receive for selling the $50m house.
