This was so much fun but hard to do from my phone so I do think the physical version will be so much better and I will probably buy it.
This wasn't a particularly long collection, but proved to be a decent look at word puzzles from a decent compiler. When we get standard puzzles, like a cross-fit or a word-search, they've been themed well, as in the case of the former using a third of the alphabet only. Elsewhere we get puzzles that are welcome for not being too common, such as code cracking ones, and a page of clues using the consonants once each only, with two of every vowel, and so on. I am not too sure of the use of bad dad jokes as the solutions to code posers – they are so obvious the answers to the actual clues are right there in front of us.
Best perhaps is the chance to revisit the old thing of 'find as many smaller words in the letters making…' type, as here for once the letters are reusable, allowing us to find an eleven letter word in the letters making MOTHER. Me being up to temp by then it really didn't take long, but it was pleasing to do so. All told I guess this could have done with more variety, but it was fresh enough, and pitched at a good level. (By nature I don't do American crosswords, partly as they are very different to British ones, and potentially culture-specific. But elsewhere most English speakers should be capable of almost all here.) Given a greater spread of puzzle types, and a content making it on par with newsagent puzzle magazines for value, and this really would have been something to write home about. I wouldn't put anyone off it, as it is.
I enjoy puzzles and games that keep my mind active. This was a fun filled book.
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.
As a constant puzzler I was looking forward to this. The idea of an ARC and a puzzle book seems to be quite contrary, but with my iPad I sat and started marking up the pages. I found these puzzles fun but very easy. I consider them beginner puzzles that I would absolutely use in my classroom. If you like a fun little busy puzzle or are fairly new, you will find this enjoyable. These are not for the challenge seeking puzzlers. I really liked some of the puzzles I am use to doing as number puzzles that were changed to word puzzles. And I love a substitution code.
