This was average. I was slightly bored. I was expecting my drama and exciting. I was left a little disappointed
I read this one very quickly. I've read several Sally Hepworth books and she does a fantastic job of reeling you in, and keeping you engaged. The characters were all pretty likeable even though they had some indiscretions, I was still rooting for them. Overall I think some of it fell a bit flat for me. Maybe it was the story seemed a little unbelievable. Maybe I needed some more character development to care about the outcome in a deeper way. .
I always enjoy Hepworths novels. They’re quick bingeable reads with twists I rarely see coming. This one is definitely near the top of favs for me. I enjoyed the premise and honestly couldn’t predict anything. I will absolutely be buying a physical copy!
Thank you NetGalley for the early access!
Gabe and Pipa’s dream home is a cottage on a cliff, but living on the cliff comes with the daily occurrence of people going to the cliff to commit suicide. Gabe has successfully talked everybody away from the cliff, suicide attempt, after suicide attempt, only this time, Gabe can’t talk a woman off the cliff and she jumps. Or did she? Pipa keeps replaying the scene over and over in her head; something isn’t right. Can Pipa trust her husband? Will somebody’s past come back to haunt them? The book has dual narration with the woman who jumped and Pipa, giving the book a little ghost element, which I loved. Sally Hepworth never disappoints and does such a phenomenal job of keeping you engaged, guessing, and reading frantically (or listening in this case) to find out what secrets will unravel next in this psychological thriller.

Thank you to Macmillan Audio and @NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book!
Special thanks to MacMillan Audio and Netgalley for the digital ARC of this book.
I always love Sally Hepworth. I wasn't sure about the narrator, but by the 4th chapter, I really enjoyed her.
This book is about Pippa and Gabes marriage. It brings you back to their relationship at the start and where it ends up.
I also adored Pippa's sister Kat. It's a great story. I always love audio but sometimes it goes slower than reading, so I always read a book and listen to another.
I've read Sally Hepworth's books and she always gives us a great story. and thanks to Sally Hepworth for bringing.mental health into the story. Many of us suffer with it in silence.. 4 stars!
For this one I did a combination of the audiobook and the kindle. As often happens when I have both I hit a point in the suspense where I can’t keep going so slowly and have to switch to kindle to binge it all and know what happens. The narrator grew on me. I didn’t love her in the beginning but as the story went on I think she did a great job bringing it together. This is a story about love and marriage and lies and mental health. I really liked the way past and present came together. Pippa and Gabe have moved to a cliff side home and Gabe finds his calling as being able to talk those suicidal folks who come to jump off their cliff away. Until the night he can’t. What follows throws their relationship and future into question. The only part I had a hard time believing was Gabe’s initial mental health diagnosis. I did like how that storyline ended up though. Overall I gave this one 4.5 stars rounded up for being such an engrossing story.
Addictive and all-consuming is the best way to describe this book. From the moment I started it until I finished, I couldn't stop thinking about the story and trying to figure out what was going on with these crazy characters. I was fortunate enough to receive both an early copy of the ebook and the audiobook -- so when I couldn't sit and read, I was listening. I was completely obsessed.
Our main characters, Gabe and Pippa are living the picture perfect life in an ocean front home with their two precious little girls. But is everything as it seems? Or are there lies hidden underneath the pretty surface just waiting to be told? This book is full of secrets and betrayals but you won't be sure just who is lying to who until the very end.
When you start this gem, carve out a chunk of time because you won't want to put it down. Buckle up and enjoy the ride.
AUDIOBOOK REVIEW: The narration was wonderful. It really pulled me into the story and helped me to feel immersed. I lost myself in this book and the audio was really part of what helped me to do that. 5 stars!
Thank you to NetGalley for early copies of both the ebook and audiobook. I voluntarily chose to read/listen to and review them and the opinions contained within are my own.
What should be the core tenet at the heart of a marriage? Many couples would say fidelity or trust, but for Gabe and Pippa, the answer is loyalty. The Soulmate delves into their lives, and that of another couple, exploring how the foundation of a marriage can be the linchpin or the undoing of that relationship when "for better or worse" skews worse.
Pippa and Gabe live a lovely life in a cliffside cottage with their two young girls. The cliff is a popular suicide spot though, and now Gabe has developed a knack for preventing such tragedies. But when the wife (Amanda) of his former boss (Max) shows up on the cliff and does go over the edge, all kinds of questions arise about both couples, their history, and what really happened at the cliff's edge.
The book is told in dual POV - Pippa narrates her marriage and life with Gabe, and Amanda tells her version of events while she is in limbo after dying. I loved the Australia setting and it reminded me of Liane Moriarty's domestic thrillers. The characters in this are complicated, and there's reasons to doubt the motives and honesty of each of them. I enjoyed how the book jumped around in a non-linear timeline to fill in the backstory. Hepworth's writing is clear and easy to follow. The audiobook narration was really well done.
There are a few twists along the way that I could see coming, but the bulk of the climax surprised me and kept me furiously speeding up the audiobook pace so I could find out how it was all going to wrap up. I'd definitely recommend this thriller for anyone who enjoys unreliable narrators, family drama, unconventional marriages, twisty relationships, mysteries, and ripped from the headlines style thrillers.
Secrets, Lies and Murder. This book is full of all of these. In this book we start off with Gabe trying to talk someone (we later find out it’s Amanda) from jumping off a cliff near their home. However she jumps, or does she? The story has twist and turns and plot twist and honestly it was pretty interesting. This book is the first by Sally Hepworth that I have read and it was really good.
Thank you for a free copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review. This was my first Sally Hepworth book and I enjoyed it! It was a pretty solid mystery and less so a thriller, but that didn't bother me. You're following two characters' perspectives in both the past and the present. As they tell their stories, the plot weaves itself together and works up really nicely. I enjoyed getting the back story from this set-up and felt like I had a full picture of them as characters because of the details being presented in this way. I also liked the atmosphere of the secluded cliff house, although I thought the setting was going to be more prominent, especially considering the premise of the book. I guess I just wanted MORE ambiance. The audio book was nice to listen to and it kept me going, with the short chapters and unresolved events at the end of each one. It left just enough to wait for and not be frustrated when switching perspectives. My only real complaint is that I could have used a bit more excitement, like twists and turns to increase my star rating. Overall, though, solid enjoyment and a quick read. I would try this author again.
I really enjoyed The Soulmate. I truly feel like Sally Hepworth’s books should be listened to. The Australian narrator really puts you into the story. I didn’t expect many of the twists so it was suspenseful and “page” turning for me. I love a book with a dual perspective and this delivered. Amanda’s point of view was different and interesting. Highly recommend!
This was an intriguing plot told from different points of view with two wonderful narrators. Each narrator exhibited their character personality and perfectly narrated the twist and turns each character went through. They both did a wonderful job telling this story in a way that made me feel empathetic towards the characters, but also felt distrust with them as well.
I never knew where the story was actually going and my guesses lead me to wrong conclusions. It’s the kind of book you devour because you want to know what happened and why. Each person has a secret and the consequences lead to unfavorable outcomes. Don’t be surprised that if you start this, you are unable to put this down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for this ALC
Book Review: The Soulmate
Genre: Mystery
Key Details:
- Mental Illness
- Infidelity
- Self Harm
- Family Drama
- Unexpected death
Thoughts: This book had a lot of tough topics in it. It was heavier than I thought it would be when I started reading it, and I don’t know if it addressed the seriousness of the topics enough. I almost felt as though this book used mental illness to add a depth of mystery to the situations, and that just gives me an uncomfortable feeling. Yes, mental illness can effect people’s actions, thoughts, and/or feelings, but that doesn’t automatically make people with mental illnesses untrustworthy. I don’t think the author was trying to imply any negative bias about mental illness, but it was something I thought was worth mentioning. There were some really well-thought out twists and turns throughout the plot, and it’s definitely a book that unravels as you keep reading. I can tell Sally Hepworth is an amazing mystery/thriller writer, but this just wasn’t the book for me. I am glad I finished it though! The ending was worth getting to, if you start reading it.
Rating: ⭐️⭐️.5
There’s a cottage on a cliff. Gabe and Pippa’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Night after night Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge. Until he doesn’t.
When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral...Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate...lie?
Told in multiple timelines from multiple people, this novel is suspenseful, interesting, and compelling. This book is narrated by Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Doublas-Henry, both of which really add to the multiple person narration. Pippa and Amanda both detail their relationships with their husbands, their soulmates, but what if neither woman has found her soulmate? I recommend this novel.
**I would like to thank NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, St. Martin's Press, and Sally Hepworth for an ALC of this book! This is available as of 10/25/22 and the Audiobook will be available 4/4/23**
I rated the book itself as a 4/5, but the audiobook is a 5/5.
Gabe and Pippa are a couple that have recently relocated to a house that backs up to a cliff. This cliff area is a notorious destination for people jumping to end their lives. Gabe has made it his mission to try to save people's lives by literally talking them off the ledge. He has a very high success rate of saving people, until one day he doesn't. And so unravels the story of the day one woman goes over the edge to her death. Did she jump? Was she pushed? Would Gabe actually lie to Pippa? Would Pippa lie to Gabe? How well do they really know each other?
This book was the kind that it's pointless to make predictions of what will happen next; you truly just need to sit back and enjoy the ride as it unravels.
Initially, I was worried the suicide/mental health aspect would be overwhelming. While it was prominent, it wasn't too "heavy" (I guess as non-heavy as those topics can be).
I didn't anticipate the ending which I loved. I hate a predictable ending. I can't say I love everything that happened. It felt a little "try-hard" in regards to all of the twists, but the author did a great job of bringing them all together regardless. Towards the end, I felt ready for it all to wrap up because it started to feel drawn out.
The audiobook was great. The dual narration was awesome and brought an additional layer to it. I didn't love Max's voice, but that's mainly me being nitpicky lol. The audiobook didn't effect/hurt the shock factor aspect at all. I definitely recommend this audiobook if the book interests you.
What a thriller!!! I was hooked from beginning to end. I love the multiple POV and before/now/after changes with each chapter. So many plot twists, some I saw coming but most had my jaw dropping! This was an audiobook arc and I am so.glad I was granted the opportunity to read and review this book. Even my husband who does not read enjoyed it. That says a lot!
What happens when love pushes you to the edge? That’s exactly what Pippa and Gabe find out in “The Soulmate”. Nobody has the perfect marriage, regardless of how it seems on the outside. What secrets are Gabe and Pippa hiding? You’ll have to read and find out.
This thriller had me locked in from the time I got the ARC via audiobook and again whenever I got the hardback copy from my BOTM box. So many twists and turns that I never saw coming. My jaw dropped several times and I found myself holding my breath more than once. The last two chapters were the most surprising of them all.
The narrator for the audiobook was very pleasant to listen to and very easy to understand. It was very enjoyable to listen to the narration.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you like thrillers and sitting on the edge of your seat.
Kudos to Sally Hepworth for yet another compulsively addictive domestic suspense novel. So cleverly written, this one is packed with compelling characters, a gripping plot dysfunctional relationships, family drama, suicide, mental illness, secrets and some crazy twists and urns. I enjoyed the unique narration of this story, dual point of views but one in the voice of a deceased woman. The structure allowed for a slow suspenseful burn as bits and pieces slowly reveal the events that lead up to the death of the woman. I was immediately drawn in and couldn’t put it down.
Hepworth has fast become a favorite author of mine. I highly recommend this to those who enjoy domestic or psychological suspense thrillers (e.g. B. A. Paris, Alice Feeney, Sandy Jones, Lisa Jewel) or those looking for a fantastic bookclub selection that would lead to great discussion. The narration by Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry was fantastic and really brought these characters to life!
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to listen in advance of the 04APR2023 release date. It is my pleasure to leave an honest review.
I’m not really sure what to think of this book. I always look forward to a Sally Hepworth book. The Australian setting and listening to an Australian narrator always make her books feel more exciting than American thrillers to me. I’ve heard a few people say this was a fresh domestic thriller but I felt like it seemed the same as many I’d read except Australian. There’s not necessarily anything wrong with that, but I just wasn’t blown away. There were definitely a few twists that I didn’t see coming though! I really did enjoy myself, but I think my expectations were set too high so I felt a bit let down.
The narrator did a great job. I honestly wouldn’t want to read this any other way because I was transported right to Australia.
*Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an Advanced Listeners Copy in exchange for my honest review.
A fast fresh read. It will leave you guessing. The character perspectives were fantastic - with excellent character development.
Narrators were well chosen and help bring the story and characters to life.
Big thanks to Net Galley, Sally Hepworth, and St.Martin Press for the opportunity to review this audiobook production.
