The Soulmate is one of those thrillers you can easily read in one sitting. In a genre that is quickly becoming oversaturated and predicable, I was pleased that this book both changed the style by including the perspective of the victim after the victim's death as well as offering a conclusion that I did not see coming. At times the plot got repetitive with the same lines quite literally being repeated between scenes. But overall, a good read that is refreshing and unique for fans of the physiological thriller. 3.75/5
This was my fifth book by Sally Hepworth and it was a definite page turner! From the start, I was captivated by the setting, a beautiful home that backs up to a cliff with a history of it's own. Without giving too much of the story away, the story is told in twists and turns throughout. There are dual timelines and points of view by two female characters Pippa and Amanda, both married to very interesting men with a connection. The connection reveals itself when their lives intersect at the cliff.
I was fortunate to receive an advanced audiobook for review and the narrators were fantastic.
Barrie Krenik and Jessica Douglas-Henry were outstanding narrators that brought the book to life.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for an early copy of the audiobook for review. All opinions are my own.
Thank you to Macmillan Audio for my complimentary audio book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am starting to come around to listening and reading thriller/mysteries, all thanks to Sally Hepworth! This is my second novel and I was not as scared as I thought I would be while listening to The Soulmate.
(Bit of a backstory, I tend to shy away from thrillers as I am a scaredy cat. I dread the month of October and it took my three tries to watch Hocus Pocus)
Anyway..... Sally tends more towards mystery and for that I am extremely grateful. The story moved along quickly, and the narrators did an amazing job with the voices. The chapters were short and I found myself listening long into the night. The story grabbed my attention from the first chapter and it would not let me go.
Pippa and Gabe have quite a unique marriage. Through multiple ups and downs they have stuck together. But can they survive this latest setback?
I really enjoyed the chapters narrated by Amanda. It was a unique POV and it made the story that much more interesting.
I was surprised (as usual) at the twist, but that is why I like mysteries, anything is possible! What a great ending. Looking forward to reading/listening to more of Sally's work.
I really enjoyed the mystery behind this book and trying to figure out what was real or not. Definitely would recommend this to friends
Wow! This was my first book by this author and it did not disappoint! The story kept me captivated while sprinkling small twists in as she set up the whole story. Told in dual timelines and with a dual POV it was a fast paced read. Both narrators did a great job and I enjoyed hearing both perspectives. Sally does a great job at providing the mystery as well as covering infidelity, love, and mental illnesses. I thought the mental illness aspect was portrayed beautifully and really shows the impacts of it on the person and their loved ones.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martins Press for the advance listing copy in exchange for my honest review
Thank you, Macmillan Audio, for the audiobook!
One of my favorite things is when you hear many people talk about an author, and you finally read them, and the praise holds up. THE SOULMATE by Sally Hepworth was so intriguing. And I have to say that it has been a very long time since who a narrator was in a book surprised me, but I absolutely loved that choice!
At first, I wasn’t sure how I felt about this book. I thought it was going to be another whodunit thriller involving a family and one part of the couple not knowing who they married. This story was anything but that. There were so many twists, turns, and revelations that I couldn’t stop listening - it’s all I wanted to do! And I did, haha. I finished it in a little over a day. And anything I thought would happen, I was so wrong. But that’s okay because it was better and more interesting.
A shout-out needs to be made to Barrie Krenik and Jessica Douglas-Henry! They were exceptional narrators that really brought this book to life.
I can see now why people love Hepworth’s books. The plot is thought out and twisty, there are characters you want to know more about, and it is very atmospheric. A definite win for me, and I can’t wait to read her backlog and anything new she writes!
CW: suicide, mental illness, infidelity
3.75 Twisty Stars
Pippa and Gabe had recently moved into their dream home. The only issue, the cliffs in their backyard. It was a well-known spot for suicides. Knowing that Gabe had made it his mission to help stop people from jumping. He never failed until now. The weird part was, from Pippa's standpoint, it looked like he pushed her. Did Gabe push her? But why would he?
This audiobook had me hooked. I finished this in three sittings. I was intrigued and dying for the truth. The story had a lot of twists I didn't expect, but not all were good. I didn't like how the mental health aspect was handled and Pippa's denial/blindness to it. Other than that, it was a great read. The author did a great job of keeping the readers in suspense.
Would recommend to those fans of domestic thrillers and suspense.
***Thank you to NetGalley, Sally Hepworth, and Macmillan Audio for graciously sending me the audiobook to review. As always, all thoughts are my own.***
I’ve got the Monday Blues. Don’t be mad but I think I’ve learned that Sally Hepworth is not for me. I’ve read a handful of her stories and have been underwhelmed. Sadly The Soulmate was the latest disappointment but I couldn’t resist this cover.
When an old acquaintance dies, it dredges up demons from the past that threaten to unravel a seemingly perfect marriage.
Here’s what I liked: dual timelines and multiple POVs. Can we talk about how cute the cover is?
Here’s what I didn’t like: the story was slow paced and the ending was lackluster. I finished and was like That’s it?
Thanks to @netgalley for the E-ARC and to Shelby @whimsyreadswithshelby for letting snap a pic of her book. 🤪
I have really come to look forward to any Sally Hepworth new release. Her books tend to go a bit beyond the typical domestic thriller genre, almost becoming more a family drama and this book is no exception. Although we have a mystery (or several mysteries, I should say) surrounding an apparent suicide of a woman, the story is also just as much as mental illness, marriage dynamics and interpersonal relationships. I appreciate that about Hepworth's books but that is not to say that this book doesn't contain some surprising twists and turns - it definitely does! I would recommend this to anyone who likes thrillers, family dramas, contemporary lit - it ticks a lot of boxes. Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's press for an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
As with all of Sally Hepworth books, The Soulmate is full of twists and turns that kept me wanting to read/listen to just one more chapter. I was never sure who to trust so I didn’t figure out what had really happened to the woman on the cliff. The audiobook with an Australian narrator adds even more to Hepworth’s ability to write evocative settings. I will continue to read everything Sally Hepworth writes!
Wowzers! I couldn’t put this one down. The story is told from the dual POV’s of two main characters, Pippa and Amanda., or I guess Amandas’s ghost. Through these characters we get the backstory of what lead up to the death of Amanda. This book has great twists and kept me guessing until the end!
Wow! I do love a twisty plot! I felt so smug thinking I had predicted what was coming, but oh I certainly did not. No spoilers in this review, since the surprises are what makes this thriller a tingling delight to read. It’s super fast paced and I read it straight through until 2:00 am. Around midnight I tried to put the book down and go to sleep, but I was so amped from the suspenseful plot that sleep was impossible.
So, without giving anything away, I will summarize by saying that the narrative focuses on two married couples in Australia. Gabe and Pippa are raising their two young girls in a beachfront house by a cliff—bad idea. Never buy a house on a cliff! People regularly try to end their lives by jumping off the cliff. Gabe and Pippa are on constant alert for jumpers and, really, who needs that kind of stress?
Amanda and Max are childless by choice and very wealthy. They have an interesting and complex relationship. Max’s family has a history of suicide and bipolar disorder, so Max uses his wealth for good, giving lectures and supporting charities that focus on mental health.
Everyone’s lives intersect and there’s a whole lot of tension, mental illness, insight, compassion, and love. I have only a little complaint about the novel, which is that the author gets a little too self-helpy at the end and her characters all start talking like therapists even though none of them are. That’s holding me back from rating the novel a full five stars. I am giving it 4.5 stars and I always round up.
Thanks very much NetGalley for the free audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This was an EXCELLENT thriller. Any thriller lover knows it can be hard to be “wowed.” This one will wow you.
I always enjoy Sally Hepworth’s books and this was no different. The fast-paced, short chapters and excellent narration made it easy to follow and fly through on audio. This started out tense and I was really intrigued, but the twists were underwhelming. Some decisions the characters made throughout were questionable, but I appreciated the representation of mental health. I’ll most definitely continue to pick up anything this author writes in the future!
Enjoyed:
- Bingeable
- Dual POVs
- Numerous timelines
Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for this ARC.
First off, I have loved Sally Hepworth's work for some time, but this title BLEW ME AWAY! I went into reading this really not knowing much about it and if you can do the same, I highly recommend it. The audio version is so well produced and has the best narration. I honestly could not wait to continue listening to it and got bitter when I had to take breaks.
We meet Gabe and Pippa. They live in a gorgeous seaside town and have a home with a beautiful view, but a deadly drop that attracts people looking to end their life. Since their short time in the home, Gabe has literally talked several people off the ledge. Their bliss comes to an end one day when a mysterious woman comes to the cliff and things do not proceed as they normally would---and she jumps. Or does she?
The novel is told in a witty way in that we hear from the woman that dies in alternating chapters. We also learn about how Gabe and Pippa met, and their not-so-blissful past. This is one book that will keep the reader putting the pieces together until the very last page. And I could not have loved it more.
Thank you so much to NetGalley for access to the advanced listening copy of this title.
A family that everybody should be jealous about. But the surface can be very scratched upon closer look. Everything seemed perfect until one day mysterious women show up on the cliff behind the family's house. She jumps. She takes a secret with her. The secret that is uncovered will bring all buried hurts to the surface.
This thriller, about murder and secrets, was smooth and engaging. I was not very shaken by the solution, nor I was especially connected with the characters. The multiple points of view add to the experience for sure, but one of them - being from out of a grave - did not agree with me, tho I see why it was there. I am not a big connoisseur of this genre. I could say, I'm dipping my toes in a vast pool of thrillers. But as this book was given to me as an audiobook, and at the same time is a March choice for Book of the Month, I admit it was not a waste of time for me.
Featuring ~ dual 1st person POV, dual timeline ~ now and then & before and after, suicide, infidelity, mental illness, short chapters
Pippa narrates in the now and then. Pippa is known as the helper and husband Gabe the hero since he's saved 7 suicidal people from taking their life near their house that sits on a cliff. Until he doesn't save one...in steps Amanda as she narrates in the before and after, but talking as if dead ~ what's up with that? Not sure, but it worked well to slowly reveal, in a fast paced way, all the secrets and betrayal.
Sally is quite the storyteller giving us some nice twists. I was kept engaged and was able to bust it out at 2x in just one day.
Narration:
Barrie Kreinik, Jessica Douglas-Henry ~ 7 hours 44 minutes ~ both did a fine job.
Side note ~ this is one of my favorite covers.
Okay I am a huge Hepworth fan. Unfortunately this book fell a little short of her usual suspenseful thrillers. I was hooked from the beginning but I think there was too much backstory that made the book a little muddy and the ending didn’t live up to the start.
However I will read every word she ever writes as I love her as an author!
Sally Hepworth does deliver a good story--and fans of hers will love it! I do enjoy this author but I didn't find the story overly gripping. Good, yes but in a more "connect the dots" family drama kind of a way. Throughout the story, there is secrets and lies revealing motives of our various characters. The narrative is shared across “Now” and “Then” (Pippa’s Pov) and “Before" and “After" (Amanda’s PoV). And with this, we are introduced to the love story of the characters, their struggles, their marriage issues, and the ultimate connections. Th e voice of a dead person works within this story.
Pippa and her husband Gabe live on a cliff where people do tend to seek the end...but Gabe seems to talk them off the ledge. However, this last woman he failed to save but as Pippa watched what transpired, she's not convinced. Then it turns out, they knew her! She is the wife of Gabe's former boss. Why did he lie? And She wanted to talk to Pippa. Was Gabe really protecting his wife? What other secrets are there? Everyone has them.....hmmm. Pippa starts to look back at her marriage as does Amanda. revealing some startling surprises and hasty conclusions. This is family drama at its best and there is A LOT of drama 4 stars
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the audio version of the story.
This was a fun domestic thriller. The twists weren't expected which I appreciated. Nothing super memorial but a fun time while reading.
