8 love Sally Hepworth's books and this one was another great one. The past and present unfolded well as the 2 narrators flipped back and forth, telling the back story little by little to leave pieces a mystery. It was a fun read with great narrators and a satisfying ending. And I loved that one of the narrating characters was someone who was dead- interesting perspective throughout the story! Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC.
The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 4.5
Format: Audiobook ARC from Macmillan Audio through NetGalley
You may know Sally Hepworth‘s work from her bestseller, The Younger Wife. In her newest mystery thriller, The Soulmate, Hepworth leads her readers to question just how far can a couple bend for each other before they break.
Gabe and Pippa’s relationship has been star crossed from the very beginning. It has always seemed that fate destined these two for each other- at least it seemed that way to Pippa. Now living in their dream home with their adorable daughters, they are the picture perfect family. But their home has a dark history. Set on the picturesque Australian coast, their property abuts a steep cliff, known to locals as an infamous scene for lost souls seeking to end their lives. Gabe, ever the charmer, has been able to talk many back from the ledge. But when a woman goes over the edge with Gabe as the sole witness, it is clear to Pippa that her soulmate is hiding something. With a torrid history in their wake, and a new investigation into old wounds, Pippa must decide if her loyalty to her soulmate will be enough to protect her family.
Author Sally Hepworth is back and better than ever in The Soulmate. With a fast paced plot, short chapters, and multiple POVs and timelines, this book is a very fast read or listen, though it does require your full attention so that you don’t miss any of the many twists and reveals. But don’t let that dissuade you- a domestic thriller of this caliber will have no problem holding your focus right until the very end.
Special thanks to MacMillan Audio and NetGalley for an audio ARC in exchange for my honest review of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth, which hits shelves April 4th. Pre-order your copy, put it on your wishlist, place a hold at your library- you will not want to miss this!
When Pippa and Gabe find their dream home in a sleepy coastal town, Pippa thinks it’s the new beginning they both need. However, their new home is located near a well known suicide spot called The Drop. At first it seems that Gabe has found a new purpose after literally talking several people off the ledge. However, Gabe can’t talk everyone down and when a woman he knows commits suicide, Pippa must face the truth that some things can’t be ignored and the love of her life might be a liar.
The Soulmate is a complicated murderous love story that you won’t want to put down! I love how Hepworth was able to spin a suspenseful tale while also bringing awareness to the importance of mental health. As always, her characters are quirky, genuine, and endearing. Pippa and Gabe reminded me a little of Lily and Ryle from It Ends With Us. I had lots of feelings over the ending of this one. The story isn’t wrapped up neatly and the characters have to make some hard choices to protect the ones they love. You might need a few days to think about this one!
There is an unexpected twist in the way this story is told and I thought it was really interesting. Hepworth takes a bit of a risk in the way she told this story and I’m really glad she did because it was a great addition to the novel.
I listened to the audiobook after reading the novel and I thought the narrators did such a good job of bringing the story to life! The novel is told from multiple points of view with each being voiced by a different narrator. Berry Kreinik voices that main character and I absolutely love her! She narrates quite a few of Hepworth’s novels and she has the best voice! This was the first time I have heard the second narrator, Jessica Douglas-Henry but l thought she was fabulous as well.
Sally Hepworth is at the top of her game with this latest domestic thriller! The Soulmate is a complicated murderous love story that you won’t want to put down!
This book was one of my favorites this year! It was hard to put down! So many twists that I never saw coming. I enjoyed the story being told from different peoples perspectives. The ending tied everything together. Definitely a 5 star read! Thanks NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the ARC!

This review will be for the audio and ebook version
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio and St. Martin's Press for the ARC and Early listen! Loved this story. Both in ebook and audio. I did listen to most of it. Loved the story and the mystery surrounding the characters. Great character development. A story you don't want to stop listening/reading. It grabs hold of you from the very beginning. Author is a fabulous story teller and the narrator did a great job telling the story and giving the characters life.
Highly recommend!
There is a cliff near Pippa and Gabe’s home where people come to jump. Babe has knack for talking them down. Until the day he can’t. And secrets begin to come out about the woman who jumped.
This is standard Sally Hepworth fare where there are family secrets and lots of drama. I love her books, and this was no exception.
The premise of this book was promising, but it missed the mark for me. The characters were hard to connect with. They were very hard to like.
The book is told in dual POV, which I enjoy. I liked the unique perspective of Amanda’s point of view. However Pippa’s character was so weak. I feel that none of the characters were developed enough to care about them.. There seemed to be a lot of plot holes that I will not list out so that I do not spoil anything from the book.
I wouldn’t call this a thriller. It was more of a domestic drama than anything.
The story, while unique, fell flat for me and left a lot to be desired.
This is the first book of Sally Hepworth that I have read. I have a few of them on my TBR. I will definitely give her other books a chance because I do think there is talent there.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This story was interesting and had a very unique storyline. Honestly though, there were so many different characters it was hard to keep track by the end what exactly was going on in the subplots. I got the main idea of the story but the smaller pieces were hard for me to understand.
How far would you go to protect the love of your life? Sally Hepworth weaves a story with twists, turns, and surprises in The Soulmate leaving the reader to wonder the same. This book was un-put-down-able! I was led astray by red herrings and kept trying to guess who was really doing what and why. This book delicately broaches various aspects of mental illness and suicide without reinforcing negative stigmas. The voice acting was well done and the audio production was nicely edited without noise artifacts, odd pauses, or other quirks that can sometimes be annoying for audiobooks. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone that enjoys suspense.
** I was provided an advance copy of the audiobook version in exchange for my honest review. **
Thank you so much to Macmillan Audio & Netgalley for this ALC of The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth!
Hepworth continues to secure a spot as one of my top domestic drama/suspense writers. The Soulmate might be my new favorite by her.
Once I started this I knew I wouldn’t be able to stop listening. The pacing? Perfect. The dual POV + dual timelines for each? Amazing. The juicy twists and secrets? Chef’s kiss. Give me more. I don’t know what Sally’s next book will be, but I’m already counting the days until I can devour it.
This book will keep you on the edge of your seat. I loved that it was not predictable like other Mystery & Thriller books. I listened to the audiobook version and really enjoyed both narrators, Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry. I enjoyed the way the book went back and forth between Pippa and Amanda. I would definitely recommend this book.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan Audio for the opportunity to review this book.
I was able to listen the The Soulmate on audio as an ARC, thanks to NetGally! I enjoyed the storyline as it provided a much different plot than I first would have expected when seeing the title with the word, “Soulmate,” in it. Instead, I was able to be sucked into the story by hearing the background of each character as it was read in first person pov of an individual character each chapter. I was pleased that the chapters were short, as it made it easy to follow along. I rate the book as three stars. Enjoy!
The Soulmate is a domestic thriller that tackles the normal issues of trust, marriage and betrayal. But it does it in an engaging manner that kept me involved throughout.
The story revolves around Pippa and Gabe, a couple that own a cottage by a particularly dangerous section of a cliff known as The Drop. The Drop has become a place where numerous people have come to end their lives. Up until the start of the story, Gabe has been able to literally talk everyone down off the ledge. But not that night. And what Gabe says happened doesn’t quite coincide with what Pippa thought she saw.
The story is told from Pippa’s and Amanda’s POVs. Amanda is the woman Gabe didn’t save. The story goes back and forth from before the event through the event and into the future as the police investigate what happened.
Hepworth takes her time setting up the story and introducing each of the characters. She gives just the right amount of suspense. Pippa at times seemed a little dense when it came to Gabe. Or maybe she’s what I’d call “blind and in love”, willing to overlook the little niggles. I like that Hepworth isn’t afraid to tackle the ripple effects of mental illness.
Hepworth doesn't disappoint with lots of fun twists and turns. The ending worked without being OTT which is my major complaint with thrillers. I tore through this in a single day.
This made for a super audio experience. I thought both Barrie Kreinik and Jessica Douglas-Henry did great jobs as the narrators.
My thanks to Netgalley and Macmillan Audio for an advance copy of this book.
I listened to this as an audiobook. This is my first Sally Hepworth book and won't be my last. That plot twist at the end was not at all what I was expecting! The narrator was good, better than others I've heard. The characters were well developed throughout the book.
Sally, Sally, Sally, you have my whole heart.
This is my third book from [author:Sally Hepworth|8123141] and she is now an autobuy for me.
Soulmate is another psychological thriller that pulls down layer after layer after layer as the pages turn. I enjoy how she gives you just enough to think you have it figured out and then thriows a wrench into it. Even when I know who done it, I still never figure out why or how till the very end.
Absolutely love her work and can't wait for more!!!
Much love to NetGalley & Macmillan Audio for my DRC.
Sally Hepworth is the queen of writing solid slow-burn domestic suspense novels. I love how her situations and characters are never what they appear to be on the surface. She slowly and deliberately peels back layers revealing more and more information as you turn the pages. And that's exactly what she's done with The Soulmate. The story is told from two alternating POVs and moves back and forth between the past and the present in such a way that it connects the storyline effortlessly and moves the plot along quite smoothly. The narrators did a fantastic job with this one! This is another Hepworth gem!
Reader beware: this book contains several hot topics (suicide, mental illness, infidelity) so it might be a good idea to check trigger warnings before reading.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the ALC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
This was my first book by Sally Hepworth and it won’t be my last! This twisty psychological thriller is told from dual POV: Pippa, wife, mother, and owner of the house that sits next to the cliff, a popular suicide spot, and Amanda, wife to media mogul Max and the most recent victim of the cliff.
This was one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a while. The back and forth between Pippa and Amanda really made the plot twisty as you got to see multiple sides of characters.
This book contains several hot topics, like suicidal and mental illness, so it might be a good idea to check trigger warnings before reading.
Thank you to NetGalley and MacMillan Audio for the ALC. This review is voluntary.
Thank you to NetGalley, Macmillan Audio, and Sally Hepworth for an advance copy of The Soulmate in exchange for an honest review! I always have to remind myself that “thrillers” aren’t always thrilling throughout the whole book. I was invested halfway into the book but when the last 20% hit, I was SHOOK! My god, how does Sally keep me wanting to figure out what is happening even with a slow build?! I was shocked with the twists and how this one ended- I’ll also add that I thought this would be 2-3 stars for me and after finishing it, it was an easy 4-4.5 stars!!! I can’t wait to see wait Sally has up her sleeve for us readers next! I believe this one is out on April 4th, 2023!
Another really solid work from one of my must-buy authors. On its face, this book and many of Hepworth's other books are thrillers. But they're so much more than that: they're often insightful portraits of complex, well-rounded women, who have husbands, children, careers, mental health issues, dreams, and conflicting emotions. The "climax" of these books don't tend to pay off in a big bang like many other thrillers, although there usually is some mystery that you're waiting to have solved. You come for the fast-paced writing and time/perspective shifts and stay for the fantastic character studies. The Soulmate was no different, although I didn't like it as much as I've liked some of her other books. Regardless, I'll read anything Sally Hepworth writes.
This was my first Sally Hepworth novel and I did enjoy most of it. There was just something about how the mental illnesses in this book were treated that didn't sit right with me. It felt like medication was treated as a cure to all ills, and that certain plot elements were caused purely by it. That being said, I really enjoyed the narration and the tension that was built over the multiple PoVs. Having an Australian narrator really helped keep me focused on where the book was set, and only added to the ambiance. There's so much trauma built into this book from the premise alone, but we also get to explore the relationships in the family and their sordid past. Pacing was excellent, just hoping for a little more sensitivity in her next book.
