Where do I start… this book was so captivating from the beginning. It starts out with our FMC Kit, a home health aide, returning to work after being investigated for the death of her patient. And if that’s not bad enough she’s then given a new patient that just so happens to be Lenora Hope, who was accused of killing her parents and sister over a decade ago. Now frail, and in need of care there’s no way she can be dangerous or could she….

I enjoyed hearing Lenora’s story and how Kit overcame her fear to make sure the truth was uncovered. I do think parts of the story dragged on a bit but it all came together in a twisty way of course.
I could definitely see this becoming a movie!

I gave this book three stars because it just didn't grab my attention the way his other books have. There were plot holes and unreasonable and incomprehensible actions by so many people. It was a little frustrating to read. And a little confusing when the "twist" was revealed. The characters were only okay. I didn't connect or care about any of them. the best character was the house.

A solid thriller, but too many twists near the end. I am continually impressed with Sager’s ability to write female characters!

I LOVED this creepy, gothic thriller!! From the single point of few of Kit who I connected with from the first chapter. This was about unsolved triple murder from the late 1920s. The author gives you just enough creepy to make it hard to sleep and the perfect amount of bread crumbs to keep you guessing. And the twists at the end!! Wow!! I didn’t see ANY of them coming!

Riley Sager has quickly become one of my favourite authors, and "The Only One Left" is among my favourite books of 2023. A gothic domestic thriller that will consume your thoughts well after the final page. In 1929 the Hope family was murdered and everyone suspects the only surviving family member Lenora. Police were unable to prove the case and Lenora denies her involvement and lives her life locked away in the family mansion. Fast forward to 1983 Kit McDeere is hired as the latest home-health aide to Lenora. Lenora is in ill heath and unable to speak or move after multiple strokes. She is confined to a wheelchair and communicates through a typewriter. Lenora types out one sentence that shocks Kit to the core "I want to tell you everything". Can Kit trust Lenora, as her story unfolds and secrets are revealed, Kit starts to wonder if this harmless women could be far more dangerous than anyone could imagine. This novel is the hallmark of excellence as a domestic thriller, with dueling timelines, unreliable narrators, and a atmospheric setting. Thank you to Netgalley and Penguin Group Dutton for the digital ARC!

This book is one of Riley’s best in my opinion. It was full of surprises and I don’t think I saw any of the twists coming

"At seventeen, Lenora Hope
Hung her sister with a rope
Stabbed her father with a knife
Took her mother’s happy life
'It wasn’t me,' Lenora said
But she’s the only one not dead"

This is the chilling nursery rhyme born out after a brutal massacre at Hope's End in 1929. Since then, Lenora hasn't spoken a word about that night.

In 1983, Kit McDeere is hired at Hope's End to care for Lenora after the previous nurse left in the middle of the night. After a series of strokes, Lenora can no longer communicate verbally, but when Kit helps her access an old typewriter, Lenora types, "I want to tell you everything."

In true Riley Sager fashion, you'll have to wait until the very end for all the twists and turns to be revealed!

I loved this book! Sager books can be a hit or miss for me, but I am pleased to say that this might be my favorite book of his! I loved the premise, the setting, the 80's vibes. Yes you have to suspend belief when reading this book, but I found it to be entertaining and I didn't guess that twist!! Would highly recommend

I have read every book Riley Sager has written to date, and this is in my top 2. I feel like he went outside of his typical bubble, and tried something new, and it PAID OFF!

This book has one of my favorite elements... a creepy house. And oh, did the creepy house deliver. There was so much lore to the characters, and so many twists and turns I didn't see coming - ugh I devoured it. It was perfect to read during spooky season, and would make an incredible movie (fingers crossed).

5/5 Stars!

[Ebook gifted by Dutton and Netgalley - but all opinions are my own. Thank you!]

While this falls somewhere in the middle of Riley Sager's books for me, it was solidly fine. It is frustrating when a book "clicks" so late in the story like this one did for me, because you'll lose readers making them wait for that moment, and I had to flip back a couple of times to clarify a couple of points and make sure I was following correctly. But, all told, I was really invested in what happened in that house and what culpability or not Lenora Hope had. I thought the ending was unexpected and creative, and I'm certainly going to continue reading the author's books.

This is quite possible the best yet of Riley Sager's works. I've been following him since FINAL GIRLS and this is one of his best efforts.

WOW. WOW. WOW. Now I LOVE Riley Sager, like he's in my top 3 favorite authors, but this book of his might just be my favorite!! It was paced just right, kept me turning the pages....loved the characters, and he aboslutely NAILED the twists!!!! Honestly, the twists and turns were some of the most jaw-drop worthy of ANY books I've read, not just of Sager's. If you only read ONE of his books, let it be this one!!!!
If I couldl give this 6 starts, I would!!! DO. NOT. MISS. THIS. BOOK!!!!
Thank you to Riley Sager, Dutton and NetGalley for the ARC of this fantastic book!!!

I’ve only read two other RS books - Home Before Dark, which I enjoyed and House Across The Lake which was just fine. This one just may be my fave so far!! It was so wild and had me hooked instantly. The twists were twisting and the gothic vibes were vibing. This has me so excited to go back to his earlier books and see if there are more I love!

Exactly what I've come to expect from Riley Sager. I find his books perform best when their 'trick' aligns with things the reader is most uncomfortable with. Those who struggle with haunted houses will have a great time with this one.

After the House Across the Lake, I worried Riley Sager had jumped the shark. This was much better. I loved that it was a retelling of a familiar story and from a new perspective. The non-contemporary timeline was believable and added ambience, especially the typewriter. Most of the twists were surprising without being totally out of left field. I didn't find it very suspenseful and wasn't too curious about the ending, which is a big problem with a thriller.

I will probably keep reading Sager regardless, but I think he'd do well to revisit some of his earlier work and take his time with his next one.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for a digital copy of this book in exchange for my review.

Sager has let me down the past two books, so I was really hesitant with this one. I can’t say I loved it, but I didn’t want to hurl my kindle across the room like with The House Across the Lake, so there’s progress. This gave me big Verity vibes in that I didn’t believe Lenora was truly injured but couldn’t figure out why she would lie. I didn’t fully see the twists coming at the end, and in this case I enjoyed them. I wish I would have experienced a stronger “creep” factor because it fell a little flat. It’s very rare a book scares me though, so if you do get the heebie jeebies with them, you might really enjoy this one.

Always a fan of Riley Sager, I waited too long to read this book! This book kept my interest from start to finish. The characters were interesting, and the story kept me guessing throughout. I absolutely thought I had it all figured out, but it turns out I didn’t. Excellent read— you won’t be disappointed!

Finalllllllly I feel like Sager is back. THE ONLY ONE LEFT is definitely a winner from him! I loved it so much. This is an engaging story about Kit, a home healthcare aid and her experience caring for Lenora who is believed to have murdered her parents back in 1929. But one night Lenora offers to tell Kit what REALLY happened. After that, shit hits the fan. The suspense and twists kept me reading way past my bedtime and I ended up loving how it all came together.

If Sager's past books were a miss for you like they were for me, I recommend picking this one up because it has the potential to be one of my favorite thrillers this year!
