Wow this was a messed up group of friends lol. I loved this audio about a group of old friends reunited on a remote island off the coast of Irelanr to celebrate the life of one of their friends who died some years ago. When a storm hits the island cutting them all off from everywhere and when one of the friends is found murdered it’s left to Cara, the only police officer on the island to find out what happened and solve the case whilst ensuring everyone stays safe. As things take a dark and dangerous turn everything Cara thought she knew about her friends is turned on its head. Great audio and a great ending.
What an excellent narrator! I think having the audiobook made this an extra enjoyable experience. Getting the correct pronunciation to the Irish names, words, and phrases was great because I know I would have butchered Sorcha and Daithi had I not gotten to hear them said properly.
The Snowstorm was a decent semi locked room kind of thriller. The start was kind of slow and the twists were a bit predictable for the most part. The cast of characters weren't as fleshed out as I would have liked. I really could not stand Ferdia oh my goodness. The ending wasn't great or awful, but that's kind of how I feel about the whole book. A very solid "alright" 3 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this arc in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you Bookouture Audio for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. This was a fun listen especially during a snowstorm.
The Snowstorm by Tríona Walsh Narrated by Jacqueline Milne was so good I ended up listening to it in one sitting. It was an absolutely gripping, pulse-pounding thriller packed with lots of twists and turns that just had you hooked from the beginning till the very end.....WoW I loved it. This book was fast paced and just had you sitting on the edge of your seat.
It’s an icy New Year’s Eve. Snow blankets a windswept Irish island as the wild Atlantic Ocean rages. Brrrrrrr
Six friends gather. It has been ten years since the tragedy that tore them apart. A lot can change in a decade…
Childhood bonds are now lifelong secrets.
Dear friendships have twisted into deep jealousies.
A happy reunion is shattered by a dead body.
The celebrations have barely begun when one of the guests goes missing. As the snow thickens, the body is found.
Then the storm wreaks havoc on the island. Everyone is trapped – there is no way out. No electricity. No phone signal.
Do they all survive this storm and live to tell the tell the story.........WoW this is so good!
I highly recommend this book and the Narrator Jacqueline Milne was excellent.
Amazing read, seriously suspenseful, friends trapped in a blizzard on a small island. The killer can't get away... and no one is who they seem. So many twists!
Friends, death, 10 years, friends, death, snowstorm....
I had a real hard time caring about any of the characters or even getting into the book. The narrator was good and did help me keep with the story but eventually I just wanted everyone dead. The writing wasn’t horrible I don’t think this book was for me but it will be for someone else who can truly appreciate it and that is why I’m giving it three stars instead of one or two.
I started listening to the book at normal speed then eventually ended up at 2.7 speed.
What an awesome debut novel from Triona Walsh.. Cara and five of her friends are reunited to celebrate New Year's eve and the 10 year anniversary of her husbands death on the Aral islands off the coast of Ireland. Where they have become completely cut off from society when no one can leave the island. When a brutal snowstorm cuts off all contact from the mainland. when a body is found in the sea, Cara becomes wrapped up in a murder investigation. With no one able to arrive or leave the island, Cara begins to unearth long buried secrets and to question all she knows, even about her closest friends
First I want to mention how incredibly lucky I was to have both the audio and book version as I would have never figured out how to pronounce those Irish names. Jacqueline Milne did such a good job with the narration of the story. I appreciated her Irish accent and enjoyed the audio version as much as I did reading the story.
On the 10 year anniversary of her husband’s death, a group of friends meet to remember Cara’s husband. This really did give me vibes of a Ruth Ware book. That slow burn, set on an atmospheric island in the middle of a snowstorm. Since no one can get on or off the island, there are only so many suspects when one of the friends turns up dead. As the facts start to unfold, it seems the friend had a secret she wanted to tell Cara, that Cara works so desperately to figure out.
Layered and complex, the story slowly unfolds during a snowstorm that is almost like a supporting character. The friendship is at the root of this story and while I was a step ahead of the story in figuring out the culprit, it is the atmosphere of the story that the author focuses on.
If you like slow burn mysteries and are a fan of Ruth Ware, you should check this one out. And you can always google the names if you aren’t an audiobook reader.
Cara is a Garda Síochána on the remote Irish island of Inishmore, where her friends gather to memorialise the death of her husband. Strangely one member of the group does not appear, but due to a large storm it is assumed they are held up. The next day a body bound in rope is washed up in a historic cove, called The Serpent’s Lair.
As the only officer on the island Cara must try to ascertain what has happened without experts or backup. Having not been born on the island she is viewed by the islanders with distain and suspicion, so when she tries to investigate what could have happened it is hard to get co-operation. However it soon becomes apparent that the victim was seen after the last boats to Inishmore had come and gone due to the storm, so the culprit must still remain on the island.
A gripping thriller which gives a great sense of place, with many tragedies and lies being unveiled between what each believed to be a close knit group of friends. This is elevated by the excellent narration and character reading.
All of them plan to meet on the NYE & the 10th death anniversary of a dear friend but one of them meets an end!
Cara, the only garda on the island meets with her friends on NYE & the 10th anniversary of her husband and a beloved friend to all in the group. When one of the friend fails to show up no one takes it seriously until they hear about a dead body being found!
As Cara investigates she unravels more and more secrets of the people close to her. The more deeper the story went I was totally grabbed by it and I had to know what was happening. There’s jealousy, mystery, suspense, love and hatred in this book!
The wonderful narration by Jacqueline Milne was through and through the best!
Thanks to Netgally, Bookouture Audio and Triona Walsh for approving the digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.
2/5 stars. Fairly confusing, ended up not finishing for that reason, but didn't hate the storyline or where it was going. Wasn't engaged in the story.
Six friends are trapped
One of them is dead
One of them is the killer
What a tagline! It totally sold it to me along with the cover and title. Which I found was rather fitting for the weather that we have been having over here in England. This book is a perfect winter read. I can't believe it is the author's debut book either…..It’s so good!
Welsh sets the scene when we are transported to the coast of Ireland. Six friends reunite after a tragedy that happened ten years ago. A body is found….With no electricity and no telephone signal, a storm. The six friends find themselves trapped but who is the killer?!
It is a story full of twists and turns. It is a gripping atmospheric read and gets you questioning all the characters… you can’t trust anyone. I was totally hooked…..I couldn't stop listening to it and finished it in two days. That's pretty fast for me with it being 9 Hours 57 Minutes long. I loved the narrator who has done a superb job of bringing this story to life.
Triona Welsh is definitely an author I will be reading more of. It ticked all the boxes for me.
Thank you to Bookouture for an ARC of this audio all thoughts are my own and not biased in amyway
Huge thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the chance to read and review this book. For me, this book was a little slow at first, but quickly picked up. I love all the details the author incorporated in the book. I was able to visualize where they were and thoroughly enjoyed the book. I highly recommend.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this ARC! I enjoyed the narrator for this story and felt like they added a nice effect. The Snowstorm is a slow burn thriller that fell flat for me. I felt it hard to keep up with and the twists to be boring.
This was my first read by this author, but I’d read more in the future.
It's been ten years since the death of Garda Cara's husband, Cillian. She and five or her and Cillian's childhood friends gather for the anniversary, on a remote Irish island.
Things soon take a turn for the worst when one of the friends turns up murdered as a winter storm rages leaving the island cut off from the rest of the world.Cara as the only Garda on the island is left to investigate until back-up can arrive from the mainland, knowing the murderer has to still be on the island.
The group went their separate ways ten years ago, and being together again brings back old feelings and resentments.
In many ways this is a classic closed circle mystery, but the setting is one not seen much giving this trope a fresh spin.
This was a very enjoyable read, made much better by Jacqueline Milne's excellent narration.
The Snowstorm turned out to be a bit different than I hoped, and not really in a good way. It started off well enough, but I expected something closer to everyone being stuck in the same place, as in the same house, rather than everyone running around willy-nilly all over the island. However, I could've overlooked that if the rest of the mystery weren't so convoluted and if it hadn't been so easy to figure out despite that. Some things were just mentioned too many times for them not to play a part in the reveal, which like the rest, would've been more effective if Cara had been a little more adept at her job. Instead, she seems to just do a lot of running from point A to point B and back again.
Jacqueline Milne narrates this one, and she is the better part of the story for me. She does give a satisfactory performance, and a few times, the narration is all that kept me listening when I otherwise may have given up because the pace had slowed.
I also liked the setting, and I could've enjoyed this one more if it hadn't been quite so predictable. As it stands, I'll just have to chalk this one up to not the story for me. I do think there are a number of readers/listeners out there that would enjoy this book. I just prefer something a little grittier. Something that challenges me a bit.
“The Snowstorm” is a perfect book for winter: if you are snowed in (or just want to imagine that you are) this thriller will keep you entertained. The story takes places on a small island off the coast of Ireland in the days leading up to New Year’s Eve, when 6 friends gather to reconnect and remember a friend who died in an accident on that night 10 years earlier. But, one friend disappears, and over the course of the next few days—as the storm rages and cuts off communication—one of them tries to determine what happened, and who killed her friend. I listened to the audiobook, and the voice of the narrator made the action come alive. The voices of the characters were beautifully differentiated and I loved hearing the correct pronunciation of Irish names and words. While there were a few predictable outcomes, there were also some aspects that were less obvious, and even though I guessed who the killer was before the end I was still engaged. I loved the interesting setting, quick pace, and the unveiling of secrets. Thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to review this audiobook.
The Snow Storm
Triona Walsh
Friends since high school the six of them gathered from far and near on the icy shores of the Atlantic Ocean to memorialize one of their own. Ten years ago, on New Year’s Eve Cillian died in a boating accident. Cara was a day later joining the friends; she was working on the mainland and had to take the ferry from Galway. Once she was back on the island she and Daithi headed to the Flaherty house where Seamus and Cillian grew up. Socha, Ferdia, and Seamus were already there however Maura doesn’t show up. Cara, the Island Garda Sergeant, receives a call about a body in the Serpent’s Lair; she is devasted to discover it is her best friend, Maura.
A snowstorm hits the island cutting it off from the mainland, no ferry, no phone, no Wi-Fi and no power and a murderer on the loose. It is up to Cara to investigate on her own. She doesn’t know who she can trust; could one of her friends have murdered Maura. Cara pieces it all together and discovers she doesn’t really know any of her “friends.” They all have secrets.
I enjoyed this tale. The Irish brogue is challenging but fascinating. I listened to the audiobook and had a bit of trouble discovering the spelling of the names. The narrator, Jacqueline Milne, was very good and her voice added to the tale. There were plenty twists, turns and red herrings. I was guessing to the end. I had no idea who the murderer was. While this story starts out at a slow pace it soon picks up and moves at a brisk pace. Kudos to author Triona Walsh!
A group of friends is stuck on an island in Ireland when one of their group is found dead during a snowstorm. Cara, local police and friend in the group, investigates the locals and her friends, looking for the guilty party. She unravels secret after secret of the people she thought she knew best. A quick moving mystery, with a fantastic narrator keeping us on the edge of our seats.
'The 'Snowstorm' is the first book I have experienced from Triona Walsh, and I enjoyed this as an audiobook.
The book is set in a rural Irish Island. It is told from the perspective of Cara, a widow and the sole police presence on the Island. The narration in a lyrical Irish accent is perfect, in that I found her to be a very credible 'Cara'. It is the 10th anniversary of the tragic fishing accident that resulted in the untimely death of Cara's husband, Killian. For the anniversary, friends of the couple meet up from various faraway locations to mark the occasion, having not seen each other since the accident.
The scene is nicely set, with a snowstorm that sees power go out across the island. When Cara is called out to a suspicious death, a chain of events is set in motion that rocks the friendship group and sees suspicion cast in all directions.
I enjoyed this book, finding the pace was about right for an audiobook, such that it was able to hold my attention throughout (Im not sure I would have been so engaged had I been reading).
Overall, a very enjoyable audiobook in the mystery/thriller genre.
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this audiobook in exchange for an advance copy.
