The plot set up for this instantly had me intrigued as I love the snow storm, locked in mystery whodunnit theme. Except stranded on an island with no chance of back up… Luckily Kara is a cop and she’s on the case to discover what happened to her friend.
It was a little slow to start and pick up, and with me being largely ignorant and unfamiliar of Irish names, it did add an extra layer of difficulty when it came to keeping hold of all the threads and who was who. But the further on I got the easier it was to assign the people to who they were. .
That being said it didn’t take too long to get going and pique my interest. I’d occasionally space out and need to get back into the story but the narration was fab and really helped me to be immersed. Occasionally there was slow bits with injections of exciting and intriguing clues that I couldn’t wait to get to the bottom of. It was a convoluted plot with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings so I certainly didn’t guess the killer!
I couldn’t have stopped as I needed closure as to what happened and it wasn’t a bad murder mystery all in all.
This is the story of 6 friends. On the 10 year anniversary of the death of a beloved member of their group, they've been reunited at the same family cabin. Things are pretty nostalgic until one of the friends doesn't come back after an outing.
That friend is eventually found murdered, and since the island is cut off from the rest of the world due to icy weather, our main character who's also a police officer, has to investigate the death herself and it's way too close to home, literally and figuratively! It will be 3 days before any of the experts get there so she has to act fast to find the evidence before it disappears.
It's a small community and not easily accessible on a good day so there are a limited amount of people who could be the killer. The more our main character investigates, the more she thinks the killer could be among her friends.
I listened to the audio of this and the narration was great. My only issue is the language barrier. I read a lot of books not set in the US and the Irish ones are usually the hardest for me. I could not tell you how to spell the name of one character in this book, so it made it a bit harder to review because the names aren't written in the summary. It was really hard at first because of this AND there are a lot of characters, so you can't gloss over it, you have to learn who they are. So it isn't the easiest to follow if you're not from there, for that reason.
If you like Clare Mackintosh and Alice Feeney, this may be an author to put on your radar! It reminded me of The Last Party by Clare Mackintosh somewhat. It wasn't a knockoff, it just had a similar vibe and I liked that. This is one of my favorite book styles and formats.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to listen and review! This snowy mystery will be available in February.
3.5 stars
This one was okay but wasn’t quite what I was hoping for/expecting based on the initial description. I was hoping for a suspenseful locked-room (or building) thriller, but it was more of a cop drama, which isn’t my favourite genre. Some of the twists/fake-outs/reveals felt a bit over the top and unbelievable, but overall, it was fine and still an entertaining enough story.
This book was a bit slow paced but a good read. I really liked the narrator and the setting of this story. It’s set in Ireland in a big storm. If you enjoy murder mysteries it’s a great book.
First off, this book takes place in one of my favorite places in planet Earth - the Aran Islands. In fact, I spent an afternoon sitting on the cliffs at Dun Aengus back in 2005 during a weekend trip to Inismór. *slips into nostalgia*
Ahem, sorry. This story about friends whose paths in childhood and later on in adulthood takes the reader on a murder mystery adventure. They hold dark secrets and deep jealousy that rears it’s ugly head just as a wild storm hits the island. Unfortunately, one person does not survive. How would you handle murder and heartbreak knowing someone else close to you may be at fault?
Parts of the book felt long-winded. But eventually the pieces fall in place.
A netgalley audio arc from a new author - well done, and a quick read. The Snowstorm by Triona Walsh had shades of Ruth Ware who is shades of Agatha Christie. Set on an island in Ireland, the weather and the setting are characters in this reunion book where friends gather, a missing friend's body is discovered, and they cannot leave the island.
I enjoyed the story, and always appreciate when the location is critical to the plot. My one troubling problem was the narration. As an audio book, with the lilt of the Irish narrator, I had a disconnect. Listening was not pleasurable because I had to work to understand and process. This is a me problem - I'm older and dealt with a brain injury from 9 years ago - and accents can either work for me or not. This was a not. I can give it a 4 star however because I would not hesitate to read this in book form and would definitely read more by Walsh.
The Snow Storm by Triona Walsh
Many thanks to Netgalley and to Bookouture audio for the audio ARC of this awesome read!
I read hundreds of police procedurals a year, and I love psychological thrillers, this novel fills the bill for both quite nicely.
The Snowstorm is a well-written, engaging novel that (through character development) delves into weighty subjects such as familial and friendship dynamics and growth. Maximum entertainment value is maintained throughout each page of this novel, and the author provides us with a labyrinth top-quality mystery to attempt to unravel (you won't be able to do so, but you will have FUN trying).
Fans ranging from those of Ruth Ware, Jane Harper, Jo Nesbo and Lars Kepler should find reading this new (to most of us) Irish author's novel a pleasure - personally I can't wait for her next offering, and I dearly hope she makes a series featuring the Superintendent from this novel.
Chose your friends carefully and stay safe out there! ;)
Until next time.
Started a bit slow, but gradually picked up. Well written, but the plot was run of the mill in my opinion. Narration was stellar.
Cara is a police officer on the tiny Irish island where she spent summers as a child. As a blizzard blow in, Mara and her childhood friends gather together to remember the lost member of their group. Mara’s husband was drowned in an accident at sea and now the remaining crew of friends and family gather together to pay their respects. When one member of the group doesn’t appear, they aren’t concerned, until the next day when her body washes up on shore. Cut off from the mainland by the blizzard, Cara is left to suss out who killed her friend, and if the killer is someone she knows and loves. Mine’s Irish lilt makes listening to this claustrophobic tale a delight
Thank you for providing me the opportunity to listen to “The Snowstorm”. I am appreciative and leave my sincerity review voluntarily.
The Snowstorm by Triona Walsh and narrated by Jacqueline Milne is an atmospheric thriller about a group of friends that reunited for a 10 year anniversary of one of their friends' tragic passing. One of them is found dead.
Overall, I liked it. I thought it would be more of a locked room mystery but it ended up being more of a locked island whodunnit. It's a tiny Irish Island, almost Christmas time, the big snowstorm is brewing. The electricity goes out, no way to leave the island. The main character, Cara, needs to find out what happened to one of her closest childhood friends. I thought the thriller/mystery aspect was interesting and the plot is fast-paced. I was suspecting everyone and I didn't guess what actually happened, so I didn't think it was predictable. I would recommend this book to fans of Lucy Foley and Alice Feeney.
I really enjoy audiobooks set in Ireland when the narrator is good because otherwise I'd have no idea how to pronounce the names. Jacqueline Milne did a fantastic job with this book. She really made me enjoy this book more due to her narration.
Note for the publisher: I really think that I would've enjoyed the book more if it wasn't marketed as a locked-room mystery. I love those and this book is great, it just doesn't fall into that category. Maybe there's still time to change it before the release. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio, for an advanced copy of this audiobook for my voluntary review.
Love the setting of an island in the Atlantic. Bunch of friends meet up again after 10 years and there's a past and present death. We've all read this book before and I will continue to read every one. Love the characters, plus its snowing out, and it was great to listen to
The Snowstorm Audiobook by Tríona Walsh
Narrated by Jacqueline Milne
A group of six friends gather on a cold and icy New Year's Eve. Ten years have passed since the tragedy that separated them. Much has changed between them. Childhood bonds are now hidden secrets. Friendships that were once close have deteriorated.
One of the friends is missing just as the celebrations are about to begin. On a snow-covered beach, a body is discovered. There is no way to leave the island as the storm approaches. Having no electricity, no Wi-Fi, and no phone signal, no one knows who to trust. Each of them has a hidden agenda and one is a killer.
The Snowstorm Audiobook is available on February 2nd.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for sharing this thrilling audiobook with me! Your kindness is appreciated.
Cara and five of her friends are reunited to celebrate New Year's eve and the 10 year anniversary of her husbands death. A storm approaches and no one can leave the island. Now a murder happens and Cara must investigate who among her friends is a murder.
I loved the narrator and the creepy atmosphere of a storm and being stuck on an island provides the perfect spot for murder.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of this Audiobook!
A classic tale of a group of friends that haven't seen each other in years coming together on a remote island during a huge storm that won't allow them to leave the island for days... and there's also a murderer on the loose!
First off, the narration on the audiobook was pretty good. I typically listen at 2.5x and even at that speed I could still follow along well. I liked narrator Jacqueline Milne and would like to hear another from her. This is the second book with a similar can't leave the island plot that I've read this month, so maybe I was just a bit burnt out on the theme, but this book just wasn't it for me. In the beginning there were so many similes and metaphors that it distracted me from the actual content of the story. Towards the end there was a plot point that made me go "Um what? Why is happening? That was the most random thing they could throw in" which really ruined the ending for me.
Although I wasn't feeling this book, I think I'd try another from the author in a different setting to see if that changes my mind a bit on her writing.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
A slightly complicated but great book. I love a good murder mystery set in a storm, especially when you’re stuck on an island or on a vacation.
So this book was right up my alley. Lots of people and storylines that all come together for a great great ending that I was surprised with.
I read the written version and also listened to this audio version as well. Enjoyed both. Narrator did great.
A snowstorm cuts off a remote Irish island as 6 friends gather together to remember a friend who died 10 years ago. What can go wrong?! I love locked door murder mysteries in remote islands and this one did not disappoint! Add in that one of the 6 friends is a strong policewoman and I was hooked. The audiobook was well narrated and I stayed up past my bedtime listening to this one! I highly recommended checking this one out!
Thank you @bookouture and @netgalley for allowing me to listen to this audiobook ahead of publication in exchange for my honest review.

The narration of this book was fantastic! She nailed all of the characters and was still easily understandable with her Irish accent! The story was about a group of friends staying together during a snow storm and one of them never makes it there. A murder mystery ensues and I love all the set in Ireland in a huge storm! I found the characters complex and interesting and I love how everything turned out in the end. I would definitely recommend to anyone who likes murder mysteries dealing with a close knit group of friends.
