With the sass of the Golden Girls and then cleverness of Murder She Wrote, Peg and Rose are some of my new favorite sleuths!
Even though this is the second book in the series, I feel like I was able to pop in and know what was happening, and who was who within the first few chapters. The dialogue was well done, I LOVED the banter between Peg and Rose. They reminded me so much of the Golden Girls and I want to have cake and solve crimes with them!
AS far as the mystery goes, I thought it was well done. I had a feeling it was one of the scorned ladies, but I just couldn't figure out who until just before the reveal!
Overall I can see this becoming another favorite series of mine, I can't wait to read more!
I always love a cozy mystery and especially the ones that feature seniors or "pensioners" who are the amateur sleuths solving the crime. In this case, again sisters-in-laws Peg and Rose return to solve the mysterious death of Nolan, a gentlemen friend of Peg. Talked into getting back into the dating scene by Rose, Peg meets Nolan through a dating site. While he seemed quite the gentlemen, surprises abound when they go to his funeral and meet several other women who also were "friendly" with Nolan. But Peg and Rose felt that she needed to solve his murder and when they start asking questions, they may have asked the fifth question to the wrong person which puts they life in danger. A delightful story but highly predictable. Still, it's a good read on a rainy day and even in a murder mystery, it gives you some chuckles with the dynamics between Peg and Rose. 3.5 rounded up to a 4.
Many thanks to #netgalley #pegandrosestiruptrouble #laurienberenson for the opportunity to read and review this book.
This is a delightful series featuring a couple of irresistible and strong willed women who join forces as they try to build again a relationship after years of disagreements.
This is an excellent mystery, solid and full of surprising twists. Peg and Rosie are well rounded and likeable characters as the rest of the characters, both human and pets.
I strongly recommend it.
Many thanks to the publisher for this ARC, all opinions are mine
Peg and Rose know how to get into trouble. The death and possible murder of their acquaintance, Nolan is just the ticket for these two to investigate. Rose was onto the truth.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and NetGalley. This in no way affects my opinion of this book which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
Sisters-in-law Peg Turnbull and Rose Donovan are still exploring their newly found friendship when Rose, a former nun who left the convent to marry her husband Peter, decides that Peg has been mourning Rose’s deceased brother Max for long enough. In Rose’s opinion, it’s high time that the widowed Peg found some new romantic companionship. To this end, she signs Peg up for Mature Mingle, an online dating service for their senior age group.
Peg’s first few dates are nothing short of disastrous, so she’s thrilled to eventually connect with the handsome and urbane Nolan Abercrombie. After an e-mail exchange that charms even the somewhat cynical Peg, she’s eager to finally meet in person. But, as she confides in Rose, she’s reluctant to make the first move for fear of seeming aggressive. Rose is disbelieving:
QUOTE
“This isn’t like you at all. You’re never hesitant about anything. And you’re certainly not shy. So what’s really going on?”
Peg sat back. “In case you haven’t noticed, this idea of yours yanked me totally out of my comfort zone. So excuse me if I’m still struggling to find my footing. But truthfully…?”
Rose nodded.
“I don’t want to be disappointed again. What if Nolan turns out to be deadly dull in person? Or if he’s only looking for a hookup?”
“Then I’d imagine you’ll deal with him the same way you do with everyone else,” Rose replied. “Indomitably.”
“Indomitably.” Peg let the word roll off her tongue. She liked the sound of it. “Is that how you see me?”
Rose laughed. “Are you kidding? That’s how everyone sees you.”
END QUOTE
Peg and Nolan finally go on a series of dates, and at first everything goes amazingly. Nolan even introduces her to his sister Barbara, who is just as delightful as he is. But after Peg brings Nolan to a dog show, and Rose gently points out several of his flaws, the heat under their burgeoning romance downgrades to a simmer. Even so, Peg is distraught when Nolan becomes the victim of a deadly hit and run shortly after.
His funeral raises far more questions than it answers, as many of the mourners seem to be women of about the same age as Peg and Rose. After it becomes clear that Nolan was something of a lothario – and worse, that he was a conman to boot – our intrepid duo realize that he was likely the deliberate target of vehicular homicide. But who of his many victims hated him enough to kill him?
Peg and Rose’s sleuthing soon brings them to a club, of sorts, of his former flames. These scorned women almost unanimously agree that the world is better off without him. Once in their cups, they even begin to speculate rather disturbingly on how they might have better dealt with him in life:
QUOTE
“What we should have done was make a plan and then take care of him ourselves.”
“All of us together?” Connie sounded skeptical.
“Yes, that’s why it could have worked. Since all of us would have been equally guilty, no one would have been able to figure out who the real culprit was.”
“That sounds familiar,” Gina said. “Didn’t some famous mystery author write a story about that?”
“Agatha Christie,” Aimee piped up. “So that’s out. Because who wants to be derivative?”
Seriously? Rose thought. That was her problem with the plan?
END QUOTE
These women aren’t the only ones holding a grudge against the deceased, however. Disgruntled family and less than savory associates also have plenty of reason to want Nolan permanently out of the picture. With almost too many suspects to sort through, will Peg and Rose be able to figure out whodunnit before one of them becomes the killer’s next victim?
Our sleuthing duo are an absolute delight to spend time with, especially as their once prickly relationship continues to blossom into a sweetly supportive friendship. They’re such opposites, yet share a core of steely determination that compels them both to uncover the truth, whether separately or together. The subplots regarding Peg’s life as a dog show circuit judge and Rose’s work running a women’s shelter were also very absorbing, and I loved the resolution of the handyman story. Peg and Rose might be stirring up trouble, but they’re also clearing up obfuscations and freeing the innocent of suspicion or worse, as their series goes from strength to entertaining strength.
Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is a cute comfortable cozy filled with
charismatic and stubborn seniors who it seems are always in the wrong place at the
wrong time. It’s comedic, sentimental, heartwarming and suspenseful all rolled
into one. Oh, and we can’t forget about the dogs!
Peg Turnball and her sister-in-law Rose Donovan have put their past issues
behind them. They are beginning to get comfortably reacquainted with each
other. So much so that Rose convinces Peg to put herself out there and create a
profile on a senior dating site. First item on Peg’s list…must love dogs, of
course!
Although Peg is really doing this for Rose, she does go on a couple of
dating misses, but incredibly, the third times really is the charm. She matches
with a very handsome senior who loves dogs, Nolan Abercrombie. As they begin to
get to know each other Peg actually believes Rose was right, but all good
things must come to an end. Noland has a fatal accident.
See…Peg knew it was too good to be true! And now it seems the accident may
have actually been a homicide! What Peg and Rose soon discover is not only was
Nolan hiding things about himself, but he seemed to be charming the money out
of many women which leads to a long list of suspects! It seems Nolan was an
enchanting con man!
So once again the two friends find themselves involved in a murder. But when
Rose is almost killed, the situation because even more urgent as to who killed
Nolan. Clearly Rose and Peg are getting too close to the truth.
Peg and Rose’s chemistry makes for a terrific combination with their witty
banter and headstrong determination. Dogs, dating and death. Who could ask for
anything more in a cozy!

What a delightful read! I love seeing older women in feisty roles. The characters are well drawn and memorable, the plot is nice and twist6 and the craftsmanship is superb. Highly recommended! I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next in the series. I received a complimentary copy of this book and chose to write a voluntary, unbiased review.
Oh how I wish I had read the first book in this series first! Though I loved it regardless, it is always nice to know how the characters came to be.
I enjoyed the humorous banter and competitiveness between Peg and Rose and the fact that the amateur sleuths are two older women. Peg and Rose couldn’t be more different, and that’s what made it work. It reminded me a lot of The Golden Girls (which I love).
I’ll have to go back and read the first book now!
Thank you to #NetGalley and #KensingtonBooks for an ARC in exchange for an honest review
I enjoy this author and this book in her new series. The mystery kept me guessing and I like the characters.
Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review
Another well-crafted mystery from Laurien Berenson. I love the Melanie Travis mysteries and I love her cameos in these books; I just wish they were longer. Peg is still not my favorite character but she is growing on me. I loved the vulnerability shown as she navigated the craziness of online dating. Rose is so cute with her naïve views of the world and how she blushes at just about everything. The mystery itself is well paced and i enjoyed following along with them as they figured out who killed Nolan. Looking forward to seeing what they get up to next.
Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is the second book in the Senior Sleuth series by Laurien Berenson.
I really enjoyed the first book in the series, [book:Peg and Rose Solve a Murder|59947216] and this one was equally as wonderful.
Rose is in charge of the investigation in this book and Peg isn't too pleased but is going along though not without bickering. I love their relationship.
The mystery was so well written, it kept me guessing the whole way through.
The characters are fun, complex and well fleshed out.
I can't wait for more books in this fun series!
This is the second in the senior sleuths mystery series and I will definitely be going back to read the first book.
I was I traduced to both characters in this book and immediately fell in love with both of them. I got a very good feeling about their sunny/grumpy relationship and just did not want their adventure to end.
Although this book is number two and is actually a spin off I had no trouble diving right in without any previous knowledge. A cute cozy quick read that is perfect for a relaxing weekend or beach read.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Cozies for this advanced ebook in exchange for my honest opinion.
Rose Donovan is in a happy marriage and would love to see Peg Turnbull, her former sister-in-law, in a similar situation. She signs Peg up for a singles dating site for seniors and after a few disastrous dates Peg finds the ideal man in Nolan Abercrombie. The first dates were wonderful. Peg’s chief requirement is that he must love dogs. Her first doubts arise when she invites him to a dog show with Rose tagging along. Peg is a breeder and a judge, yet Nolan steps in to wrongfully explain some of the sights to Rose. Peg has just decided that Nolan is not right for her when she hears the news that he has been killed in a hit and run. Paying respects at his funeral, she discovers a number of women there who had all lost money or property to Nolan, a con man. Now her curiosity is aroused and she convinces Rose to help her investigate his death.
Peg and Rose are an odd couple. Peg is impulsive and demanding. Rose is a former nun who left the convent to marry Peter, a former priest. They now run a women’s shelter. She is soft spoken and often proceeds cautiously. Peg and Rose had a falling out and did not speak for thirty years. Now they have renewed their friendship, but there are times that they still wish to kill each other. Despite their differences they work well together and will charm the reader. I would like to thank NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing this book for my review.
Shrew older ladies solving a murder? SIGN ME UP!
I loved the first book in the series and the follow up was just as cozy and such a fun read.
Peg and Rose still bicker and are exasperated with each other but you can really tell that they are becoming closer and really do care about each other. I really liked that you can see their relationship grow! I did like that this book follows the murder of a man that Peg was in a relationship with, it made for a fun mystery with lots of suspects.
This book is definitely for you if you love:
-unlikely crime solving duo
-miss marple like older ladies
-poodles and dog shows
-light drama/cozy
MY REVIEW: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/5
👉 While this is the second book in the Senior Sleuths series, I didn't read the first BUT didn't have a hard time getting right into it.
👉 It wasn't action-packed per se, but was fast paced and thrilling! Lots of twists and turns and sleuthing 🕵️
👉 I also loved the relationship between these two women—They're sisters-in-law, but don't quite get along anymore BUT they're really working hard at it and pleasantly surprise each other throughout the book.
👉 If you're a fan of cozy mysteries, dogs, and a lot of cake, definitely pick this one up!!
I was excited to see another novel in this spin off series available and could not wait to read it. I was not disappointed!
Peg and Rose's relationship is delightful as they poke at each other. Rose talks Peg into joining a senior dating website (which in itself just made me laugh) and after a few dud experiences, Peg meets a man who seems to be perfect. Of course he was too good to be true, and when he is killed in a hit and run, much comes out about his background as Peg and Rose investigate.
In the meantime, there is lots going on with poodles, dog shows, a new kitten for Rose, and a neighbor with a disruptive grandson, not to mention a visit from Peg's niece Melanie, who is a bit put out that she' isn't involved in helping solve this murder.
I was kept guessing until the end who the murderer was, which is always a good thing! Highly recommended for those who enjoy cozy mysteries, fans of the author, and fans of Murder She Wrote.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read and review this novel.
Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble
Laurien Berenson
July 25, 2023
Peg Turnbull and her friend Rose Donovan decide that perhaps after years of being a widow, Peg should attempt a dating site for seniors. Sorting through the different options became a bit too trying for Peg so Rose decided she would take on the task, then show her what she composed. Peg continued on with life, judging dog shows and caring for her champion Poodles. In the midst of it all she started receiving texts and calls from gentlemen who suggested they date. Peg chose a handsome, polished man and went on a few dates with him. She hadn’t shared with anyone but Rose so when her niece Melanie heard of her aunt dating she was extremely surprised.
Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is another of Laurien Berenson’s Poodle series where mysteries are solved but usually not by the police department. It will be published on July 25, 2023 by Kensington Publishing Corporation. They allowed me to read and review the ARC via NetGalley. Her books are always fun to read. This latest series with Peg and Rose brings in the senior crowd yet usually has activity with Melanie and her family. It’s an excellent choice for a light, delightful book to read. They are humorous to devour especially after reading a heavy suspense or mega-fiction novel. Her characters are a joy to encounter. Do enjoy!
Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble by Laurien Berenson is a delightful story to read. Peg and Rose are quite a pair. I laughed often while reading their latest adventure. Rose has decided it is time for Peg to date and puts a profile for her on a dating site for seniors. Peg is shocked when the matches start rolling in. Peg is even more surprised when she finds one man with whom she would like to see more than once. When Nolan, Peg’s gentleman caller, ends up dead, Peg and Rose set out to find his killer. I like how Rose and Peg bicker back and forth. They even argue over who is going to drive. I like Laurien Berenson’s writing style. It is friendly and engaging. The characters are realistic and developed. I had gotten to know Peg from the Melanie Travis series. I was happy that Melanie and her family were included in the story. Peg and Rose are alike in some ways and dissimilar in others. Their strengths and weaknesses pair well for solving a mystery. The mystery was interesting. Rose keeps Peg on her toes. Peg likes to believe she does not miss a thing, but it turns out some things do escape her notice. It is a good thing Rose was on hand. The pair soon discover that the suspect list is quite lengthy. Nolan might have misrepresented himself to Peg (raise your hand if you are shocked). I was able to identify the guilty party early on, but I had fun following Peg and Rose as they investigated the crime. The mystery is neatly wrapped up at the end. While Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is the second A Senior Sleuths Mystery, it can be read as a standalone. Personally, I think that Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is better than Peg and Rose Solve a Murder. Peg’s poodles are front and center of course. Poodles are smart and lovable. I like that we get to learn about different dog breeds, dog shows, and dog show judging. It is amazing how one little thing can take a dog out of the running for the big prize. I look forward to Peg and Rose’s next adventure. Peg and Rose Stir Up Trouble is an entertaining tale with squabbling sisters-in-law, precious poodles, a dog show conundrum, a dead date, an excess of suspects, and scrumptious cake.
Peg Turnbull, who is a dog lover and a supporting character in the author's excellent Melanie Travis series, has her own series now. She is joined by her sister-in-law Rose Donovan from whom she had previously been estranged in this fun series. This is the second book in the spin-off series but works fine even if you are new to this one or the original series.
Peg and Rose couldn't be more different, but they're able to find common ground when solving crimes. This is the second book featuring Peg and Rose and the story starts out with Rose signing Peg up for a dating website! Peg is surprised when she gets several matches, but the guy she likes just may be too good to be true. Before Peg has the chance to find out what he may be up to, Nolan Ambercrombie is murdered and it appears there are plenty of female suspects! Peg and Rose once again team up to catch a killer. Their strengths complement each other and the two women are learning to like each other in spite of their past differences. As always, I enjoy the dog show scenes (Peg is a judge) and the humor throughout the book. I rated it 4.5 stars.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the advance copy of this ebook. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
Rose convinced Peg to try on line dating and she met Nolan- and was happy. And then someone killed him in a hit and run. Rose and Peg, "mature" sisters in law who have a, ahem, sometimes challenging relationship make a dynamic investigating team as they set off to find out who murdered Nolan and why. Of course, and regrettably, they discover that Nolan was not the man Peg thought he was and there are a number of suspects. No spoilers! The charm of this new series lies in the relationship between these two and, I gotta admit, all the animals (even if Rose doesn't get the appeal). Thanks to netgalley fro the ARC. This is a delightful spin off from the Melanie Travers series and perfectly fine as a standalone.
