When Heather Willett's son Ross is set to graduate from college and she realizes that she's no longer happy in her marriage, she rents a cottage on beautiful Nantucket for the summer going to find her happiness again. Ross' girlfriend Kaillie and her family live on the island running a construction company that builds mansions for the super-rich. Instead of going into business with his father like planned, Ross moves to Nantucket to learn the construction business. Heather and Kaillie never got along from the start and Kaillie sees Heather coming to the island as keeping an eye on her son. Then something happens that brings them all together and work through their differences.
I love this author's descriptive style of writing though at times at can be a bit over the top. The island descriptions make you feel like you're really there soaking up the sea and sun and relaxing vibe of a summer in Nantucket. The characters were well developed and I could see the viewpint of each woman's differences. Grab a copy of this perfect beach read for yourself!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Nancy Thayer has long been a favorite author of mine. She continues to be after reading this book.
Heather Willette is a dynamic character who realizes that her marriage is no longer working and longs for a new and different lifestyle. Of course, there are issues because there are always issues to overcome in these situations. But she decides to take some time and rents a home in Nantucket for the summer. This story takes place there - mostly. Her son, Ross, has graduated from college and is moving up there.
Heather's husband places a relatively minor role. However, he is important to the storyline for several reasons. Essentially, all these characters are involved in Heather's life in Nantucket - along with several she meets along the way.
All in all, I loved this book. The story was well-written and thoughtful considering that the primary character was in her 50s. (I applaud all writers who write a story featuring age-appropriate characters.) I was caught up in the story from the start and the author kept me reading until the end.
Thank you to NetGalley and Ballentine Books for the opportunity to read and provide an honest review of this book.
A marvelous story of love, commitment, and survival after loss. Heather leaves her husband after 20+ years and spends the summer on Nantucket in a rental. Her son graduated from UMASS and instead of working with his dad in the family business in Concord, opts to work for his girlfriend's father's construction business on Nantucket.
Now Kailee thinks his mother moved to the island to keep an eye on Ross. Their relationship is on shaky ground until a secret is revealed and a devastating accident occurs, changing the course of everyone's future.
A wonderful story of resilience, adaptation, and following your dream. A 5 star read that you're going to want to add to your beach bag.
Although I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Love Nancy Thayer’s books…they take my mind right to the beach and make me feel so happy. All the Days of summer brought me to the beautiful island of Nantucket which is certainly bustling during the summer months. Thayer’s characters mimic people you may know which makes them so very authentic. Heather, a mother with Ross, an adult son, is going through a divorce and decides to stay in a small cottage on Nantucket for a few months to figure out her future. Her son’s girlfriend, Kailee, is also from Nantucket and he chooses to spend the summer there without the knowledge that his mom will be there.
It is a summer that changes lives forever. This read is complete with family drama, love, and definite life changing events, all so well written. Heather’s transformation gives hope for a new life after a divorce. A perfect read…especially for those planning a beach vacation.
Many thanks to Nancy Thayer, Ballantine Books, and NetGalley for affording me the pleasurable opportunity to read an arc of this heartwarming read being published today. Looking for more reads by Nancy Thayer in the future.
A beautiful mix of characters that are the a mix of warm and like-able contrasting with their imperfections and irritating character traits that lead to a more complex story. A story about family connections, starting over, and continuing to grow into our best selves as our lives evolve.
A perfect spring/summer read.
This book mainly is set on Nantucket. We meet Heather, a 40something in a marriage that no longer is thriving. Her son, Ross, is just finishing college and is in a serious relationship with Kailee. When Heather and Kailee meet, things do not go well.
Heather tells Wall she wants a divorce, and a tiny cottage on Nantucket all but falls in her lap and she decides to rent it for the summer and take time to reflect and decide where to go from here. Ross is living in Nantucket and working for Kailee's family, and Kailee feels that Heather has followed him there.
Not going to lie - Kailee annoyed me through much of the book. She was whiny, spiteful, jealous and clearly spoiled.
Heather adopt a dog and meets a man, and her life seems to be going well.
Some tragedy hits, not Heather directly, and it makes Kailee look at Heather and life differently.
A great summery type read!
Thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing - Ballantine for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
All the Days of Summer is a wonderful story takes place once again on Nancy Thayer’s the much-loved Nantucket Island. Heather Willette moves there for the summer. Soon afterwards her son goes to work there with his girlfriend’s family construction company. Lots of family drama, new dreams, new friends and building new relationships.
Not all is smooth sailing for Heather, her son, Ross and his girlfriend, Kailee. Heather and Kailee’s perspective are both given with makes for a more complete read. This story has the beautiful setting so vividly described, but it is the characters’ relationship that take center stage. Even the love for the island is built and honored by the characters in the story working together. Bumps, ups and downs and sad times as well as loving happy ones are all done in the Nancy Thayer way.
A wonderful beach read that is right whether you are sitting in you backyard or on a beach somewhere.
An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
All the Days of Summer explores the collapse of a marriage, motherhood, young love, friendships, family, romance, and new beginnings. It follows Heather who has left a loveless marriage and is finding her place in the world. Lovely descriptive writing with some unexpected turns. A wonderful summer read filled with hope and renewal. I enjoyed this.
This newest beach read by Nancy Thayer centers around two families. Heather Willette is in the process of divorcing her husband Wall. She moves into an adorable little house on Nantucket for the summer while the divorce goes through,, and they sell their home in Concord, Massachusetts. Their son Ross, also announces he is moving to Nantucket to be with his girlfriend, and future wife, Kailee Essex. The other family is Kailee and her parents. The island has always been their home, and they are extremely rich, and extremely proud of their heritage. They run a construction company that is responsible for building all of the huge mansions all over the island, and it has caused a lot of bitterness among the locals.
I really liked Heather. She didn't let anything get her down....not her ex-husband, her worries about what the future would hold after the summer was over, not even her bratty soon-to-be daughter-in-law. She took everything in stride, and made a perfect place for herself. Kailee was someone I could not stand. She was rich, entitled, spoiled, rude, and just generally a brat when she didn't get her way. She had a lot of growing up to do. Wall was a jerk, and Heather was so much better off without him. Kailee's parents sometimes seemed nice and sometimes seemed entitled, so it was hard to get a read on them.
Overall, this was a great read, that would be the perfect addition to your beach bag. It definitely put me in the mood for summer!
The first third of the book was slow and I found all of the characters unlikeable. The book felt cliqued with Heather renting a summer home on Nantucket to essentially "find herself" after deciding to divorce her husband of more than twenty years. I decided to look past the glorification of throwing away her marriage as the characters grew apart, as many novels do.
The characters developed more in the second two-thirds of the book, and I was able to enjoy the story, although it still followed many of the cliques, such as Wall dating a significantly younger woman, and then begging to get Heather back at the end of the book. If the couple had truly grown apart such that the marriage ended, it would have been nice for each to separately go his own way in peace. Women don't need the "satisfaction" of an ex husband begging to have them back, and it's quite insulting to think that we do. While the characters did "grow" throughout the novel, they remained unlikeable and immature. It was hard to connect with any of them.
Finally, the scenes on the pregnancy, and whether or not Kailee would "keep" the baby were over the top and unnecessary, rubbing the author's pro-choice agenda in the reader's face and trying to normalize that it was Kailee's "choice." Not a fan of political agendas in novels. There were certainly many other ways this could have been written without it being so extreme.
As soon as I finish writing this review, I’m packing my bags for Nantucket. In All the Days of Summer, Nancy Thayer describes the setting so clearly that one can see the little cottage, the quaint town, and even the flowers in bloom.
And what a delightful story. Forty-seven-year-old Heather faces the fact that her marriage is over and packs her bags to spend the summer at the shore. Her son, Ross, newly graduated from college, is serious about a new girlfriend, Kailee. Her aristocratic, privileged family runs Nantucket. And, as luck would have it, they all end up on Nantucket for the summer, creating the perfect atmosphere for Thayer’s best writing. Her strength is delving into family relationships, the familiar ones that bring both the greatest joy and the deepest heartaches.
The characters are well-developed and true-to-life, especially spoiled Kailee. The author adds touches that weave happiness throughout the story: a rescued puppy, a second chance romance, and a new baby. Nancy Thayer’s books have been described as satisfying, like the dessert at the end of a delicious meal. Pack this one in your beach bag. It’s a great read.
A good beach read set in Nantucket. Heather finally has decided it’s me time! Her marriage to Wall has lost it’s passion, more like roommates then husband and wife. She decides to divorce him and rents a small cottage in Nantucket. Her son Ross girlfriend is from there and as things are getting serious between the two when after graduation they both also move there. Ross has accepted a job from his future to be father in law. Things get tense between various characters and feelings are hurt, but love will shine thru.
Very realistic and the way we all may have felt at times. Love the description of Nantucket and now on my bucket list. Thank you NetGalley for this eARC. I am voluntarily posting an honest review after reading an Advance Reader Copy of this story. #NetGalley #AllTheDaysofSummer
I was super excited to get an advanced copy of Nancy Thayer’s new summer release, All The Days of Summer and devoured it in two days. Set in my favorite book setting of all time, Nantucket. Heather Willette is ready to move on from her marriage now that her son has graduated from college and is going to work for his girlfriends father. Prior to knowing Ross’s summer plans, Heather rents a Nantucket cottage for the entire summer. Only to find out it looks like she is following her son and girlfriend to meddle in their lives. I loved this story of Heather trying to find her way in a new town and deciding if this could be a permanent move. Really enjoyed and I’ll remind everyone when it comes out on May 2nd.
Heather has decided to change her life- her marriage to Wall is dead, her son Ross is graduating from college and she needs to find her next act- so she rents a cottage on Nantucket for the summer. Turns out Ross plans to spend the summer (perhaps the rest of his life) on Nantucket working for his girlfriend Kailee's father. Kailee isn't happy that Heather is going to be on the island but Heather's got her own thing. This is classic Thayer, told alternately (in the third person) by these two women as they navigate the summer and major life changes. Heather integrates smoothly into town, rescues a dog, and meets a guy while Kailee struggles a bit with her own mother and her own expectations. There are good atmospherics (and recognize that these are very privileged people). The characters ring true and you'll root for them. Except for Wall. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC, Light reading prefect for the beach.
I really loved this story Heather , who has decided her marriage is over and she wants a divorce. Her friend Christine suggest renting a cottage that one of her friend has in Nantucket. They go for a weekend and Heather decides that is what she is going to. Having met her son Ross' girlfriend Kailee, she figures that she and Ross will live in her house as he is coming home for the summer to work with his dad. Well, that backfires as Ross has decided to work with Kailee's father and she is also working at his construction business.. So off she goes to Nantucket. Kailee thinks she is stalking Ross but she made that decision before Ross told her. Heather makes a lot of friends there, gets involved in the community. THIS IS A MUST READ. So much happens and does Heather decide to by the cottage and stay in Nantucket.
I always enjoy reading a Nancy Thayer book! I love the setting of this book-Nantucket. Such beautiful descriptions, giving a sense of being there. Heather is such a strong character that I was surprised that we were to believe that she could stay in such a loveless marriage, for so long. That being said she did turn her life around, some by her doing and some by wonderful opportunities given to her. Her future daughter in law, Kailee is a very immature, selfish young woman. She does become more likeable as the story goes on, but still definitely not an admirable person to me. Which, of course, adds more depth to this story. An enjoyable read!.
Lovely story!
Things I enjoyed about this book:
- Heather is a strong female, able to make difficult decisions for herself without being selfish
- the beautiful setting of Nantucket and it’s small town atmosphere
- strong sense of family
- Evelyn’s dedication to preserving Nantucket’s environment
There was probably only one thing that I didn’t care for, and that was Kailee’s immaturity throughout most of the book. I understand that it was probably written that way on purpose, but there never was an aha moment when she changed.
I always enjoy books by this author, and I think you will too.
Thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book, but my opinions are my own.
Heather has been stuck in a loveless marriage but now that her son has finished college, she decides to leave her husband. A friend finds her a small cottage to rent for the summer and she is off to Nantucket. Her son Ross, who was slated to join the family hardware shop in Concord, decides to spend the summer working for his girlfriend’s family’s construction company, also on Nantucket. Heather doesn’t like Kailee, the girlfriend, and the feeling is mutual. As Heather and Ross settle on the island the story takes twists and turns. Though Heather and Ross try to give each other space, inevitably their orbits intersect. In addition to a great beach read, Nancy Thayer raises the issue of habitat destruction in favor of beach homes. I love all things Nantucket and this was no exception. I thank NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I liked this more than some of Nancy Thayer's most recent books but something still felt missing. First, it has been awhile since I have detested a character in a book as much as I detested Kailee. Second, even though it was alluded to, I'm not sure I liked the ending. Third, there was perhaps one too many cliches in how the story progressed. As always, I love the setting of Nantucket and Heather was fantastic. I would be interested in reading another book about this family set 20 years later. . .
All the Days of Summer comes out next week on May 2, 2023 and you can purchase HERE.
Kailee gave herself a moment to breathe in the afternoon air. It was warm, but not hot, and beds of blue hydrangea lined the front of their house, with pink and white petunias winking from the soil. How could her mother do it all, Kailee wondered. Evelyn did have a gardener and a housekeeper, but Kailee was certain she'd never be able to accomplish this network of perfection. Her mother's plans for the Essex Nature Foundation were complicated. Kailee doubted that she could work for her mother and learn about her father's business, too. She knew her mother needed help, but Kailee hadn't studied in order to plan parties. She's studied to learn how to run Essex Construction, and she was eager to start.
Nancy Thayer’s writing about Nantucket is an excellent novel for summer reading. I love how descriptive the island setting is in the summertime.. with it’s beautiful, aromatic flowers in bloom.. along the brick-paved streets with its centuries old Ivy covered homes.. and miles and miles of sandy beaches—how perfect for a private retreat.. a dream getaway. ☀️🌊🏖🌾🐚
The story follows Heather Willet who finds there’s no longer any love in her marriage.. it has run it’s course.. and she is looking for something more in her life. What that is she doesn’t know. Her friend tells her about a cottage for rent on Nantucket and falls in love with it the moment she sees it. 🥰🏠
After just completing college, her son Ross decides against working for his dad in their hardware store choosing instead to live on Nantucket with his girlfriend Kailee. Her family lives there and owns a construction company where Ross will work. They build mega-homes for vacationing millionaires. 👷🏻♂️🔨🏘 Many islanders are unhappy with the construction of these homes. 👎🏻🚫
Heather and Kailee’s first meet got off to a bad start. Heather worries her living on Nantucket will cause Kailee and Ross to think she’s following Ross which is not true. She gets involved with a church there, finds a job, and the possibilities of something more than friendship with her new hot boss 😘. Heather is happy, absolutely loves Nantucket and wants to live there full time. But what will Ross and Kailee think about that? A surprise change in plans arise for the couple 🙂, and then they all go through something heartbreaking.💔
This explores the complexities of marriage, motherhood, friendship, romance, fate + new beginnings.. and most importantly it centers on finding your own place in this world.♥️
It’s a beautiful, wholesome + heartwarming story filled with hope and renewal. Enjoyed! ❥ 4.5 stars — Pub. 5/2/23
