Thought it was a bit slow to start with but once it picked up i loved the way the story unfolded and would highly recommend
The Suspect was a great read by Kathryn Croft. When Jess was a little girl, her mom Lori was killed while she was asleep in her stroller. Twenty years later a man walks to her on an empty street. She recognizes his face from pictures in the newspaper, he was the man who killer her mom. He tells her that he is innocent and that the police got it wrong. Her father and sister tell her to stay away from the man but she is shaken when the man is found dead. She is on a mission to find out what he wanted to tell her and starts investigating herself. I enjoyed reading this book and cant wait to read more by the author.
Loved loved loved this! A brilliant thriller. I listened on the way to work and it was fab. Even stayed in the car a little too long Crazy twists and turns. Brilliant crime good characters a perfect mystery thriller
As usual, Kathryn Croft created a suspenseful and entertaining read with an unpredictable twist! This twist has layers, so just when you think you have it figured out, there is another surprise. I didn't love the dual timeline (perspectives in the past told by the mother, perspective in current day told by the grown daughter) - it felt a little choppy and would have loved the story told from the daughter's perspective alone. But otherwise, I really enjoyed this book! The narration was excellent.
What a gripping read. i was hooked in from the first few chapters and couldn't put it down.
4 star read.
This is a rollercoaster ride from beginning to end! This is a new author to me, and I was not disappointed at all! This is one of those where even though you have stuff to do or want to go to bed, you will lie to yourself and say, "I'm just going to read one more chapter," and then it's 3 AM.
So I will say this, Croft does an insanely outstanding job at keeping you guessing though out the story. Just when I think I solved this thing, something would happen, and I would be completely wrong!
Lori is out for a walk with her infant daughter Jess, and while it seems like everything is good and nothing unfortunate can happen, the most sinister thing does! She is murdered. Nathaniel is the main suspect in the murder; they did not have enough evidence to hold him, let alone convict him. Now, years later Nathaniel finds Jess and states that he did not kill her mother and that she needs to get to the bottom of who killed her mother. The story spans between the present day with Jess and 1993.
While Jess is hunting for her mother's killer and looking into the past, she finds out that many of her family members have been keeping secrets. Will she get to the bottom of who killed her mother? Read this one full of twists and turns and an adventure!
I listened to the audiobook; it was compelling and kept my attention the whole time! I loved it! The narrarator was a perfect fit for this mystery! I want to extend my gratitude to Negally and Bookouture Audio for this extraordinary adventure full of twists and turns!
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for an audio arc in exchange for an honest review.
Jess was a toddler when her mother, Lori, was brutally murdered in the park one morning. Twenty years later the man suspected of the violent deed approaches her on the street professing his innocents. He claims that he was in love with Lori and that he would never of hurt her, all he wants now is to clear his name and for Jess to know the truth. As Jess begins to question everything she has believed all her life the lies her family have been keeping start to unravel.
The mystery is told from duel perspectives and timelines; Jess in the present and Lori in the past. It was a pretty good psychological thriller that slowly reveled the truth. I was more connected to Jess as a character but questioned her immediate trust of Nathaniel over her parents. There were a couple of side storylines that felt unnecessary and never amounted to much, like the new boyfriend. Overall this was a good domestic thriller. I had the audio version read by Tamsin Kennard who is a solid narrator and I enjoyed her performance.
A woman in her thirties is approached by a man everyone believes to have murdered her mother. He claims he is innocent but before she can get any details from him, he dies in mysterious circumstances. The woman sets about trying to find out if he was telling the truth and her family were lying to her all this time. Good plot, a little slow moving at times and the characters seemed to have a hard time grasping the obvious, but all in all quite enjoyable. Well narrated with good accents.
It usually takes me a chapter or two to get into audiobooks as I need to find the rhythm and a feel for the narrator, but this one was engaging from the off.
A clever suspenseful novel full of twists that keep you wanting more. The plot builds, the suspense is tense and the ending is not one you see coming.
I would definitely recommend this book to friends.
This character driven thriller drew me in immediately. Jealousy, betrayal and deception come together to create an enticing mystery. Jess is confronted by her mother’s supposed killer. When his body is found later, her world is turned upside down. Everything she has been told about her mother’s murder is put into question. Has she been lied to by the one’s closest to her? If so, what are they hiding? Kathryn Croft expertly crafts a mystery that kept me guessing until the unexpected conclusion. The narration added an element of intrigue and suspense. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
Really enjoyed this book. It took a while to get going but the pace speeds up and leaves you guessing right until the end. The dual timeline was really clever and made the story for me. Loved the narrator - would love to hear more books narrated by her. Really enjoyable book.
I have a huge fan of psychological thrillers and had high hopes for this one. I wouldn’t say it was a disappointment, as overall it was an enjoyable read, but I do feel there was some plot holes and the pacing was a little slow at times. I enjoyed the characters and the premise and will definitely look out for the author in the future as I’m sure I will enjoy other books by her.
The audio was a little hard to listen to with no enough character variation
This is the first book I read/listen from this author. Although I didn’t like the narration very much, I think the plot was very good and it delivered a good ending. Even thought it’s more a slow burn than I fast paced thriller, I would like to read more books from this author in the future.
Over twenty years after her mother- Lori is killed, Jessica is approached by the man who police always suspected. He insists that he is innocent and was in love with Lori. This interaction sets Jess off on a quest to discover who actually killed her mother. Along the way, she uncovers a whole bunch of secrets about her family and could just be in danger herself!
I’ll be honest- I don’t have many thoughts on The Suspect. This was a quick, easy listen; I devoured it in one day over Spring Break while supervising my kids. But— it wasn’t memorable and never really roped me in. Plus- there were all kinds of silly plot holes!
Thank you to Netgalley for a ALC of The Suspect in return for my honest review.
All her life Jess has had to deal with her mother’s death that happened in front of her while she was sleeping as a small child. She was told one thing by her family and the killer never really paid for his crime. One day she runs across the man that she recognizes as her mother’s killer and he tells her that he did not do it. Then later on he is found dead. This puts Jess on a journey to try and really find out what happened to her mother.
The Suspect was a bit slow moving at times and I listened as I was driving, so I caught myself losing some interest in it. I did want to know what really happened to Lori, Jess’s mom. We have two timelines, present day with Jess and the past with Lori. Jess is pulled in to try and really find out what happened to her mother that day and along the way she finds secrets and lies aplenty. The ending was a bit predictable for me. Though far from perfect, I would give Croft another try. The narration by Kennard was very good!
Many thanks to the publisher Bookouture for granting me an audio copy to listen to and review!
Jess’s mom, Lori, was brutally murdered in a park while walking Jess in her stroller. There was a suspect, but due to a lack of evidence he was never convicted.
Now, more than 20 years later, the suspect approaches Jess and tells her he was not only innocent, he was madly in love with her mother. She wants to investigate his claim further, but he is killed before she can. Her entire family encourages Jess to let it go and let sleeping dogs lie.
But it’s soon clear to Jess that there are secrets in her family and she continues in her quest to arrive at the truth. Narrated by Jess in the current day, and in the past by her mother, the story began to drag with a lack of suspense and no real reveals or new information, despite a lot of red herrings and foreshadowing.
The book ended with a confession monologue and an epilogue that had a nice twist, but while it kept me interested enough to continue reading, in the end, it had too many plot holes and unlikely circumstances to make this a memorable read.
First time I have attempted a novel by this author and have to say I really enjoyed this audio book - kept me guessing right through and despite the twists and turns I was convinced I knew who the killer was - I was totally wrong! A great book and would recommend
Narrated by Tamsin Kennard ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Story by Kathryn Croft ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I've tried a few Kathryn Croft books before and this is by far the best of them yet.
This book in my opinion can best be described as a slow burning story until about the 70% mark where it becomes a Babushka doll giving lots of twists.
It was twenty years ago that Jess's mother was murdered when Jess was in her stroller taking a walk in a local park. Her mother, Lori, was a single parent although very much attached to the father of Jess. However, a secret sends Lori into a tailspin and might eventually have led to her death.
The story reverts back and forth between the now, which is Jess's story, and the then which is Lori's. It all comes to a head when a man named Nathaniel contacts Jess with a claim he is not the man who murdered her mother. Although no evidence exists to say Nathaniel did, it was believed he was the killer so Jess is terrified. As she investigates, she is dragged into the past and she herself feels the brunt of lies which have been fed to her for ages. Her sole goal is to find the truth, but can she as she becomes embroiled with deceitful characters and feels threatened by what she once held dear, find the answer she seeks?
Being raised by her real father and his "new" wife has generally been a fine experience for Jess even though tension comes crashing down upon her as she learns the extent of her family's secret.
The book starts slow and there are some plot holes but overall it is a satisfying story that is easy to read and offers a challenging question to the reader. Who killed Lori and who is lying?
Thank you to Kathryn Croft, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for a copy of this story which has already published.
Twenty years ago, Jessica was in the park with her mother when she was attacked and killed. Now, Jessica encounters a stranger who turns out to be the prime suspect at the time. He reveals some hidden secrets and Jessica starts looking into the circumstances of her mothers death.
Told from .Jessica and her mother, Lori’s point of view over twenty years apart, the plot soon builds up into a gripping domestic thriller. Plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing what really happened on that fateful morning. Lots of details, build up a great picture of each character. A well written book and as a first from Kathryn Croft, I look forward to reading more by her.
