Jess' mother was murdered when Jess was only 2 years old. Now, in her twenties, someone approaches her to tell her that the suspected murderer was not the real killer - it was someone else.

Kathryn Croft's writing unfolded into a wonderful story with multiple twists. Just when you think you've figured it out, she surprises with another. I enjoyed the audiobook of this and was enraptured by how the author and narrator were able to pull the reader into Jess' head balancing confidence with a touch of anxiety/paranoia based on the story she'd been told about her mother.

The dual points of view from both Jess and Lori (her mom) were done well and left me wanting to know what would happen next. The character development was spot on in complexity, involvement of supporting characters, and shifting perceptions.

Thank you to Kathryn Croft, Bookouture Audio, and NetGalley for the Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Thank you Bookouture, Kathryn Croft, and Netgalley for this audio in exchange for an honest review. I thought Tamsin Kennard narrated the story quite well. She was fantastic. The plot of the story made you want to hurry to find out who killed Jess’s mom. Though I figured out who killed her, it was a fast paced, kept your interest throughout the book. Kathryn Croft is one of many go to authors when I need a book that I know I’ll like. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 solid stars!

Oooooooh! This was a damned good one. I was hooked. Thoroughly enjoyed it right up until the last page.

For me the pace was set perfectly in this novel. A dark, twisty domestic thriller that I was so so sure I had worked out right up until I was wrong. Jess our protagonist is likeable, a hard exterior has been built to protect the vulnerabilities that have been developing throughout her life after she witnessed her mothers murder when she was two years old. As we pass between two timelines, now and in the run up to Laurie’s murder the story flows seamlessly and we soon find out that everything has been a secret of a lie. Just when I had recovered from the twist in came another. Absolutely loved it! Highly recommend and the narration was great too.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the Opportunity to listen to this audiobook in return for an honest review.

Book Title: The Suspect
Author: Kathryn Croft
Narrator: Tamsin Kennard
Publisher: Bookouture Audio
Genre: Psychological Thriller – Family Drama
Pub Date: February 8, 2023
My Rating: 3,5 rounded up

The book blurb starts off with . . .
My family said he killed my mother. They lied…

Jess was just two years old fast asleep in her stroller, when her mother Lori was killed.
She was too young to remember anything.

Story is story from the POV of Jess-Present Day and Lori-1993.
Jess is now thirty and is approached by a man who tells her that he is innocent of killing her mother ~ someone else did it.
Jess is sure that someone is trying to keep the truth about her mother’s death hidden.
She is hopeful her family can help. She has been raised by her dad, step-mum and half-sister, Zara. She is sure they and especially her father will assist in finding the truth; but no one is willing to stepping up. ~ Hmmm

The audiobook narrator Tamsin Kennard did a great job in performing the characters and has such a pleasant voice. Story was slow at times but the narrator kept me interested.

I found most of the character unlikeable but hung in there- I wasn’t expecting any big surprises but I sure was curious.
Guess what? The ending was a surprise thus my 4 Stars!!!

Want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for February 8, 2023

It has been twenty years since Jess lost her mother to a brutal murder. Only two at the time, Jess has no memories of that devastating loss. Always curious about the loss of her mother, she becomes obsessed about finding out what happened. Her mother was named Lori. One day Jess is approached by a stranger who insists on talking to her so that he can tell her that he was wrongly accused of her mother’s murder. Now Jess really wants to know what happened, once and for all.

The first person she goes to is her father. After all, wouldn’t he want to know the truth as well? Shockingly, he tells Jess to leave things alone. He is unwilling to discuss things further. Adamant even. This pushes Jess even further. She has so many questions and the more she wants to know, the more she learns. She begins to unravel a web of deceit, lies and secrets.

This is a dual timeline story. We have Jess now, in the present. But then there is Lori, before her death. There is a story to be told and Kathryn Croft does it perfectly. She pulls the reader into both the story of the present but also the story of the past. The twists were many, and the ending was truly shocking, thus making her The Suspect a well-written, captivating story. I was able to listen to this thrilling book that was smoothly narrated by Tamsin Kennard, making this an even more compelling read.

Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.

It feels like years since I have read a book by Kathryn Croft so being a big fan of her writing you can imagine how excited I was to get my hands on her lastest release The Suspect Croft Certainly doesn’t disappoint. This story is filled with Suspense……I wanted to know has much as Jess what the truth was!

Croft drip feeds us information when we meet Jess and follow a story alternating from different timelines of the pass and present piecing a tragic story together. When a man appears in Jess’s life, who she believed was her mother’s killer but this man claims he is innocent!

OMG what a book! I can not begin to tell you how addictive it is. I found myself listening to it any moment I could. The narrater is brilliant and has done an awesome job bringing this story to life. layer upon layer The Suspect will have you guessing until the end.I loved the characters and every thing about it. It is an extremely captivating story which has been well thought out. With so many twists and turns it will have you hooked from start to finish.

Croft ceratinly hasn't lost her touch! This book is what a psychological thriller is all about and more! I cannot recommend it enough giving it all the stars.

Thank you to Bookouture for a copy all thoughts are my own and not biased in anyway.

This was both a psychological thriller and a whodunnit mystery rolled into one. Jess is a young woman in London who has her life turned upside down when she is confronted by her mother’s murderer, Nathaniel, from many years ago— when Jess was only 2 years old. The man insists that he was wrongly accused of the murder and desperately tries to convince Jess that she is in danger from the real killer and shows Jess an old picture that makes her question everything and consider that he may be telling the truth. By the time Jess finally agrees to listen to what Nathaniel has to say, he goes missing. There seems to be danger and suspects all around Jess as she tries to figure out what happened to her mother when Jess was just a child. Some of the most suspicious people are her own family members! I feel like I suspected almost every character in the book at one point or another! The book does start to get a little slow in moments where the author goes out of her way to create additional suspicion with all the characters, but the book was definitely a fun and interesting read. I got wrapped up with the characters and was excited to find the resolution. Overall, a very entertaining book that will keep you guessing whodunnit until the very end!
Enjoyed #thesuspect Thanks, #netgalley

This was almost a great domestic thriller with some great twists at the end. It just took too long getting there. I listened to the audiobook and found myself losing interest in the middle. The book was told from dual viewpoints-Lori in the past and Jess now. This was an effective way to tell what had happened to Lori when Jess was an infant. Now Jess is an adult when a man from her mother's past shows up and wants to talk to her. There were several candidates for murderer and I thought I had it figured out. The author did a good job casting doubt on several characters. I received a copy of this audiobook from Netgalley and this probably kept me listening past the point I would have had I not felt I needed to review it. I am glad I finished it. The ending redeemed it a lot for me. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

The Suspect drew me in right away and I really loved the concept of this novel. I will say that the story lost momentum for me on the backend but picked up again at the end. I loved being surprised by the ending and would recommend this book to friends. This was my first Kathryn Croft novel and I am definitely interested in checking out her backlist.

This was a ride!
Jess is in the park when she is approached by a man. Not just any man, but the one who everyone believes murder her mom Lori. Of course, he claims his innocence, which leads Jess to start searching for the truth.
Dual timelines between Jess’s mom leading up to her murder, and Jess present day looking for answers.
The more Jess tries to unravel the truth, the more she herself is at risk. Most of the suspects are members of her own family and she can literally trust no one!
The ending was kind of insane, and although I found this to be a page turning book, the big reveal was a lacking for me.
The narrator for this book Tamsin Kennard, is terrific though and although I was a little disappointed in the ending, I would still recommend this domestic thriller.

Thank you to NetGalley and Boukouture Audio for this audiobook in exchange for my honest opinion.

I finished this one January 31st. This book 📕 was such a quick read, I finished it in about a day and a half. I loved the narrator, she did an excellent job. This one kept me guessing the whole way through. I would suspect one thing, and the next second I would suspect something else. I did not see the ending coming!

Kathryn Croft just does not disappoint. I loved this book and the narration by Tamsin Kennard was spot on. Usually I multi-task with audiobooks, but this one hit a point where I literally couldn't do anything but sit and listen- chores and sleep be damned. I was so invested in the characters and story. I loved that the book had subtle and not-so-subtle red-herrings that easily could have been responsible for the death of Jess' mother. I would have one theory and then a short while later, I was back on another. Every suspect and lead had just the right amount of hinting and believability that I was just itching for the conclusion. I couldn't put it down! 4.5/5 stars from me!

Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture audio for an ALC for an exchange for an honest review.

This was a wonderful book. I enjoyed listening to it. Thank you to NetGalley and the author for allowing me access to it. It’s crazy what lengths family will do to keep a secret buried. And who they will hurt in the process to keep it hidden! I was hooked straight away and couldn’t get through it fast enough. And what I thought I knew I most certainly did not. It’s a must read!

This book is a psychological thriller/mystery/family drama, which I found really enjoyable and interesting.

The story, which is told in two different timelines, is about a woman called Jess and her quest to find out who killed her mother Lori many years ago. When Jess is approached by the man she has been told killed her mother, he tells her that he is innocent, and this is what leads her to try to find out what really happened to her. As she pokes and prods at events surrounding her mother's death, she uncovers a lot of secrets, and there are people around her who are not happy at what she is doing.

The audiobook narrator was fantastic and she told the story of the two female characters beautifully. I enjoyed listening to both Jess and Lori's stories. I loved how passionate Jess was.

This is a very good book, which I highly recommend.

Many thanks to the author, narrator, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.

The suspect - Kathryn Croft

Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture Audio for an eARC of the captivating psychological thriller / mystery.

I read hundreds of books in this genre a year, and I have read every book available by Kathryn Croft (which means I was extra excited to get approved for a pre-released copy of this audiobook). As always, Croft excels at her....um CRAFT as writes the Pringles of thriller novels (you just can't put it down, just ONE more page, chapter, book)!

Kudos to the narrator, she did an excellent job in a challenging role.

My favorite Croft book to date, in runs the full gamut of emotions as the main character, Jess, works to uncover the truth about her mother's vicious slaying.

Croft skillfully weaves her web and holds us captive as she navigates from the past to the present jti unveil heartbreaking details in the characters* lives, particularly when she describes a soul that longed to trust others, who was buffeted by cruelty every time she did so... I just wish that Jess' mother would have taken her daughter and fled, rather than waiting for until she had 'all her "ducks in a row" thereby restricting her options.

Can't WAIT for the next story from Kathryn Croft!

Keep reading and stay safe (sleep with one eye 👁️ open around certain family members and chose your friends carefully)!

Until next time...

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for gifting me an audio ARC in exchange for my honest review of the latest thriller by a favorite, Kathryn Croft, the audiotape wonderfully narrated by Tamsin Kennard - 4 stars!

When Jess was small, her mother was murdered in front of her while they were at a neighborhood park. Now, a man who was a suspect in her murder approaches Jess out of the blue, saying he didn't kill her and knows who did. Jess' family tells her to stay away from him, but Jess wants to know the truth. Then he is found murdered as well.

The book is told in two timelines - Jess in the present and her mom in the past. This is a well-crafted thriller with intriguing characters - I felt so bad for Jess' mom. All of the characters are keeping secrets and at some point I suspected everyone of the crime. I do love a book that will keep me guessing until the end.

The Suspect by Kathryn Croft is a domestic thriller that follows the story of two women twenty years apart. Lori—a young mother and the events that lead up to her tragic murder. And Jess—Lori’s daughter now grown is suddenly approached by the man she believes murdered her mother.

Nathaniel France was convicted in the court of public opinion (the police didn’t have enough evidence) and is now seeking out Jess to proclaim his innocence. Who is lying? Who is telling the truth? What really happened to Lori and who can Jess trust? All will be revealed! Or will it??

The story immediately drew me in and I was invested, which I love! I found the middle to be a bit slow and repetitive, but it’s worth getting through for the ending. As an avid thriller reader, I predicted the big twist, but the author’s heart-wrenchingly dramatic telling was just as enjoyable as if it were a surprise. That said, I DESPISED the epilogue. I am not a reader in search of a HEA nor do I need every story to be wrapped up in a big red bow at the end, but seriously?! THAT?!?! You’ve got to be kidding me???? Clearly, I’m invested, lol.

The audiobook production was outstanding. I found the editing and mastering to be crisp, clean, and seamless. I do think this particular story would have benefited from two narrators given the dual povs, however, that is in no way a criticism of Tamsin Kennard’s narration, which was excellent and I look forward to enjoying her work again in the future.

A HUGE thank you to NetGalley & Bookouture for an advanced copy of the audiobook for an unbiased review! 3.75 stars rounded up.
