Every once in a while, I enjoy reading a children’s book. I was drawn to the book by the author, Susan Meissner, because I’ve always enjoyed her adult novels. The illustrations in this book are beautiful. What do you do with pumpkins after Halloween is over? Why you donate them to the animals in the Zoo. This delightful story story is told in a poetry format. I think this book will probably be a favorite with many children.
There are so many things to love about this book. The story about a trip to the zoo on pumpkin day is delightful and fun to read aloud. The illustrations are captivating and offer many fun things for the reader to discover on each page. So much action is depicted that a child will want to pick this book up over and over to explore the detailed illustrations even if they cannot read the words. This book would be a great accompaniment to a family or class trip to the zoo in the fall.
This book reminded me of another book I love reading to my children. The cadence is calming. The images are sweet. I really enjoyed this book and it is a great read aloud for all elementary students. #netgalley
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of "Pumpkin Day at the Zoo". All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oh my goodness. This book was radiating cute animals and fun rhymes! I am in love with the expressions that the animals displayed and their playful mischieve that is being had. Finding the two chipmunks on each page was fun! I appreciate how the author let readers know about donating your uncarved pumpkins to zoos.
This was such a cute book! My 5 year old loved it. The illustrations were so colorful and the story was so cute.
This book took me right back to memories of trips to the zoo during a pumpkin weekend. My daughter enjoyed this story, as she remembered seeing similar things during our trip! The pictures added great detail to the story. I was happy to see the amount of animals named in the story!
The language is very kid friendly, with some fun and creative descriptive words! Such a very cute story!
This was a fun rhyming book. What puts us back over the top is the illustrations. They are bright. They are colorful, and they are funny. The way the various animals are drawn, their facial expressions, it all adds up to a perfect fall read that is sure to be a staple at story time for years to come.
My 8 and 6 year olds read this book with me, and both absolutely loved it and told me to “give it 100 stars!”
The story is told in rhyme, as zookeepers deliver pumpkins to the zoo animals for a snack on an autumn day. The animals are shown digging in to their snack, and the illustrations are perfect and add so much to the story. They are vibrant, cartoon style pictures of the animals, making the kids giggle as we read the story. A great variety of animals are shown.
The author notes at the end that many zoos will take pumpkins in the fall, a great reminder to not just throw pumpkins in the trash!
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson Children’s for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. We will definitely be adding a copy to our shelf this fall!
Could this book be any cuter? First of all, I will be purchasing this book for my school library and also for myself. I already have a cute idea to do a lesson using this book as my read aloud for K-2 kiddos in my library.
This is the cutest fall book inspired by the zoos giving pumpkins to animals to see what they do with them. I love seeing those pictures on Instagram and the book brings it to life for kiddos all over!
I especially enjoyed the rhyming words and the adorable illustrations. It’s a safe book for all members of your family and perfect for any kiddo!
This is an adorably illustrated picture book that would make a great fall read with your kids! The rhyming story is about the residents of the town bringing their uncarved, unpainted pumpkins to the local zoo for all the animals to enjoy. Before reading this cute story I did not realize that zoos and wildlife organizations accepted these kinds of donations so thanks to Susan Meissner for bringing it to our attention in such a delightful, fun way!
Thanks to Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to check this one out!
Very cute little book for the kids to see how animals in a zoo would interact and eat a pumpkin. Font plays into its words which can be fun.
I absolutely loved this book. It's such a fun and adorable story. The illustrations are spot on. You can tell how much fun the animals are loving and enjoying the pumpkins that were brought in for them.
The note at the end about checking with your local zoo to see if they will accept your pumpkins is great.
Definitely recommend!
This was a great book and an instant favorite with my 2,4 and 6 year old.
The pictures were great and so were the variety of animals in the story.
After reading it my kids asked to read it again and wanted to go learn more about the books in the book. Well done!
Thank you to Netgalley for a free digital download in exchange for an unbiased review .
It's a special day at the zoo and the animals as so excited. It's fall and the local farmers are bringing their left over pumpkins to the zoo to share with the animals. We see all the different zoo animals enjoying their pumpkins. There are good descriptive words used to describe how the different animals enjoy their pumpkins. Lovely illustrations. Young children will really enjoy reading about the animals and their fun day at the zoo.
This is an adorable story with beautiful and vibrant illustrations. I think kids of all ages will love this book and all it's fun pages.
I was able to read this story on Net Galley before it was published. The illustrations are absolutely wonderful and make this book even more fun to read. Getting to see the animals be silly or crazy with the pumpkins bring the words to life. My 2.5 year old daughter loved the colors and pointing out how the animals were eating the pumpkin. This is such a fun preschool age book to read with kids who love animals and going to the zoo. The kids and adults can enjoy picking out the animals they recognize while also learning the names of new ones. It is written rhyme prose which is great for little ones to help expand their vocabulary. I also enjoyed the last page of the book where they added that a lot of actual zoo's will take pumpkins.
This was a very cute story about zoos using leftover pumpkins as treats for animals. I thought the illustrations were well done, and that it could be a fun fall book to read with kids.
Cute children’s book about zoo animals getting a tasty snack! Pumpkins! Lots of colors and animals to keep your little entertained while you read.
“Hooray for pumpkin day at the zoo!” I wish my local zoo had a pumpkin day too! 🎃🦍🐒🦁
Pumpkin Day at the Zoo is adorable and features so many zoo animals! The illustrations are vibrant and dynamic, and the rhyming verses are catchy with the perfect amount of words on each page for me to memorize quickly (one of my favourite things about the books I read to my toddler). I especially liked how certain words are in a larger font, and different colours, catering to slightly older preschoolers that are learning to read.
Thanks NetGalley, Susan Meissner, and for the arc copy to read and review voluntary.
As a former animal keeper, I'm quite familiar with the wonders of Pumpkin Day(s). This book does a great job of showing how great these gourds can be for just about every animal at the zoo.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the ARC!
