The Night it Ended is a fast paced read that will have you trying to solve who murdered Charlotte at the exclusive school for troubled girls.

Dr Madeline Pine a criminal psychiatrist is asked by a private investigator Matthew Reyes to help him out with the case by interviewing the remaining four students.

The girls all have their own secrets and all deny knowing anything about the murder.

Who if any of them can Madeline and Matthew believe.

The atmosphere is dark and twisted and the tension mounts with each page you turn.

You can feel the cold winter wind and with every twist and turn in the story you will be looking over your shoulder.

The ending will surprise you and blow you away.

The Night it Ended is a fantastic debut novel and I am preordering for my daughter.

I cant wait to see what journey Katie Garner takes us on next.

Thanks to NetGalley and Harelquin Trade Publishing, MIRA for a nail biting read.

This book was a little hard for me to get into, but at the same time there was a question in the back of my head about where it was going and what had actually happened to Charley. The ending to me is what saved this book from a 2 star review.

Dr. Madeline Pine gets a call asking if she could come help Detective Matthew Reyes work a case at a remote all girls school up north. A girl was found dead, and he has been hired to determine if it was an accident or if something malicious happened. It is referenced in the call that Detective Reyes found Madeline through her book, and her work with a case called the Strum case from the year before. Madeline agrees, and so the story begins.

Detective Reyes wants Madeline to interview the remaining 4 students that are at school for winter break. He apologize for keeping her away from her family during that time to which she responds they are at her in laws. Once the interviews begin, all of the little clues come into place that all is not as it seems at this school. There is something going on, and they will get to the bottom of it. Honestly, the ending is what saved this book from a 2 star book for me. It did feel like all of the revelations were thrown together, and I had to re-read the ending to make sure I understood all of the twists but once I confirmed I would say WELL PLAYED!

The writing in this book was a little challenging for me. It writes like Madeline is having psychotic episodes. There are a lot of references to people hurting themselves, anxiety and depression in this book. There is also this weird possibility of a romance aspect that was unfulfilled between Madeline and Matt. I think what hooked me was the police interview that kept popping up from the year prior with absolutely no explanation of who was being interviewed and for what until the very end.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Dr. Madeline Pine, a criminal psychiatrist, helps PI Matt Reyes investigate the case of a girl found dead at Shadow Hunt Hall, a boarding school for troubled girls. Hidden secrets and lies are revealed. This was a very gripping read with some major twists and turns. I really wanted to enjoy this one, but if fell flat for me...I think my biggest issue was that none of the characters really felt "real" to me...They were all just so odd. It is also hard for me to get into a book when you don't have any likeable characters, which I found true here...the main character was just...odd...and not in a good way...I would give this author another try, but this just wasn't the one for me.

Wow! What. a. ride! This is only maybe the second book I've read in the "dark academia" realm, and I LOVED it! First of all, I am here for a good unreliable narrator. When done well, they can add a whole different level of suspense to a book and this one delivered. While I knew that she was an unreliable narrator due to hints throughout, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why she couldn't fully be trusted.

I'm typically pretty picky when it comes to suspense and thrillers. I don't enjoy when I can guess twists or what happened/is going to happen. That was not the case here. I couldn't figure out a thing. My jaw dropped at every twist. This was truly original and gripping. I would say it's pretty medium paced until the action picked up (and then it was very fast), but I could not put it down because I just had to know what happened so it's certainly an easy binge read.

The only reason this wasn't a full 5-star read for me is that there was SO much going on at the end that it got a little muddled. I found myself having to pause to keep up with everything.

CW: self harm, murder, minor/adult relationship, infidelity

4/5 stars: Thank you to Harlequin Trade publishing, Katie Garner and NetGalley for an e-ARC of this debut novel!

Tragedy strikes at an all girls school for troubled teens during break when only a handful of students remain. A private investigator is hired by one of the mothers and he brings on criminal psychiatrist, Dr. Madeline Pine, to help him dig into case and the girls at the school.

I felt like there were a couple slow spots throughout the book, but for the most part it was twisty, dark and kept me on my toes! I absolutely did NOT see the big twists coming at the end and cannot wait to see what Katie comes out with next!

Dr. Madeline Pine is called to help with a case at Shadow Hunt Hall, a boarding school for troubled teens. One of their students, Charley, was found dead in the woods in her pajamas. The police believe that this was an accidental death that happened as a result of sleep walking, but Charley' s mom doesn't believe it. She wants more answers. Since Madeline is a criminal psychologist, her expertise is essential in finding out what happened to Charley by interviewing each of the girls at the school that knew her. Soon it becomes quite obvious that Madeline is struggling with her own life. During her stay at Shadow Hunt Hall, she begins to hallucinate. She believes someone has been in her room moving her things around so she can't find them. She has severe anxiety and panic attacks. Is Dr. Pine in the right state of mind to help with this case, or there more going here?

I am so happy that I had the opportunity to read THE NIGHT IT ENDED. This was such a great thriller that kept me entertained and was just what I needed to get me out of my reading slump. The book opens with an interview that was done one year prior to this investigation. We don't know who the people are, but it becomes obvious as you continue reading the story. I loved the mysterious setting of the remote boarding school and the interviews between the chapters. I was on the edge of my seat until the very end of it. If you are looking for a story to escape into for a day or two, I highly recommend grabbing a copy of THE NIGHT IT ENDED. This was a fantastic debut and I can't wait to read more books by Katie Garner.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing (MIRA) for my ARC!

This was such a gripping read and will hook you from the very beginning! The Night It Ended is a twisty dark hard to put down thriller. It is set in an creepy remote boarding school for troubled girls.
When a student named Charley is mysteriously found dead outside in her pajamas with no shoes on, psychiatrist Madeline Pine, is asked to assist in the investigation by interviewing other students to help get information that could solve the case.
She was told the police think the death was a sleepwalking accident but the girl's mother does not believe this and asked that it be investigated further. She quickly realizes that things seem very off about the school and the student's death.
Madeline has her own secrets and seems unreliable at times which leaves you with even more questions.
The books alternates between the investigation and an anonymous interview that took place a year before. All of this comes together and leads up to a shocking ending that you will not see coming! I read this book in two sittings and found it hard to put down. There were a few parts during the school investigation that thought were longer than they needed to be but the ending was exactly what I look for in a great thriller! It's hard to believe that this is a debut novel. I will absolutely be looking to read other books by this author in the future. If you love twisty thrillers that will keep you guessing, then you definitely need to add this one to your reading list!

I thought I would enjoy this based on the blurb describing dark academia. I was mistaken. Nobody in this story was believable or likable and there was so much that could have been edited out. Sad to say this was dud for me.

Dr. Madeline Pine is a criminal psychiatrist who specializes in the female mind. When she receives a call from PI Matt Reyes asking for her help on a case, she isn’t sure she’s in the right head space to be of help, after a case nearly destroyed her last year. She agrees to help, heading hours north to Shadow Hunt Hall, an exclusive boarding school for troubled girls. A student has died, and while the police have ruled it an accident, the girl’s mother isn’t so sure. Dr. Pine will be tasked with interviewing the girls at the school, in hopes of learning the truth.

Intertwined with the story at Shadow Hunt Hall is a transcript of an anonymous interview from a year ago. There, a woman is recalling the story of an affair gone very wrong.

I enjoyed this book from the start, but at around 40-50% started to get bored with the boarding school plot. I wasn’t too interested in the story there, it missed the mark for me. I actually wish there was more emphasis on the anonymous interview, as I liked learning the truth about her story way more than that of the boarding school.

Overall I enjoyed the twist in the end but I wish there was less boarding school and more anonymous interview.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

The story reads like a locked room mystery. Dr. Madeline Pine, a psychologest, is asked by a private detective, Mathew Reyes, to help him invest a death if a student at a private school. Police say it is an accident, but the mother of the victims wants better answers. I could not put this book down. I wanted to find out what happend so bad. Then odd things started to happen and the book took me down a rabbit hole I didn't even see coming.

Thank you NetGalley, Kate Garner and the publisher Harlequin for letting read the arc coppy of The Nigqht It Ended

Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own.

While I really enjoyed the premise of this book (dark, creepy school, dead student, troubled psychologist), the execution wasn't a great fit for me unfortunately.

I appreciated the need to demonstrate that the main character had mental issues that would make her a very unreliable narrator - but there was a tad too much repetitiveness on this front for me, and I found myself skimming chunks of the narration just to avoid it. The disjointedness of her character made it hard to follow where I was in the main plot (solving if the student death was an accident or homicide), how much time had elapsed (sometimes it was just suddenly the next day without context), or the whereabouts of the other characters (for only a handful of characters, it was impossible to actually get to know any of them or understand their relevance easily).

The end does pull together a lot of the threads really well, and with good payoff (enough that it bumped me up a star on my rating). Overall it just didn't quite hit as much as I had hoped it would, for my personal tastes.

Ok this one snuck up on me and the ending kinda flipped my entire rating on its head. It was kind of an odd reading experience for me. I was initially into it, things started off pretty good and the setting was strong. The whole isolated boarding school on 300 acres thing was a pretty creepy vibe and then it flipped back and forth between Madeline’s viewpoint and a year prior with a transcript between two anonymous people. As I really settled into the story I did get a little frustrated though, there were lots of things about Madeleine that irritated me, it was the whole damaged female character who doesn’t know if she can trust herself because she takes meds schtick that I’m getting real tired of. But I pushed on despite this and the slow burn because I just had a feeling it may pay off. It mostly did I guess? The ending was pretty shocking and definitely not what I was expecting, it verges on banana’s territory but it surprised me, so I’ll take it. If you have patience with this one I kind of feel like the ending makes it worth it.

The Night it Ended had good bones but I didn’t get pulled in until the last third of a book. I wish the girls would have been the focus; not the psychiatrist. She was not believable even for someone taking it.

💥H O O K E D from the very first chapter … “The Night It Ended” by Katie Garner is an absolute page turner with one hell of a BANGER twist that will send you on a downward SPIRAL 🤯

BOOK REVIEW: 🖤🖤🖤🖤/5

Shadow Hunt Hall is a boarding school for troubled girls located in the deep, dark woods. Many of the girls are there for rehabilitation after facing abuse, inflicting harm on themselves or being harmful to others. One student (Charley) has been found dead in the woods in the dead of winter barefoot and wearing only her pajamas. The police figured that she slept walked into the woods and fell and hit her head, but her mother thinks something more sinister happened to her daughter 🌲

The mother reaches out to Detective Matt Reyes to investigate her daughter’s case more thoroughly. Matt Reyes also seeks help from Criminal Psychiatrist Madeline Pine to come with him to the school and interview the girls one on one to find out if Charley had any secrets 🤫

“I try to shake away the feeling of unease but fail miserably. Something about this place … the cool, stone floors. The whistling cries the lead panes windows make every time the icy wind blows. The scent of ancient, cold decay. It doesn’t remind me of any school I’ve ever seen. It reminds me of a prison”

For fans of The Broken Girls, Sharp Objects and The Girls in the Garden, this novel will completely catch you off guard in the best way! It is impossible to decipher who is telling the truth and who is not … and what sinister secrets have stayed locked up behind the gates of Shadow Hunt Hall!

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC of this book. This was a great read! The story was suspenseful with great twists. Highly recommend

This was a good thriller with a solid, exciting twist that I didn’t see coming. I found the story a little slow in some parts, and occasionally felt my mind wandering, but generally it was twisty and psychologically engaging. The last few chapters were really something, and I’m glad I stuck it through some of the duller parts. All in all - read this!

WOW! I just finished this and my head is spinning, which is great! This is such a suspenseful, twisty, psychological thriller that I consumed! Now that I have finished it, I plan to re-read it to see the bits I missed! Its rare that I have a book sneak up on me at the ending like this one did...the ending is so shocking...and its not just one thing but several things that shocked me and caught me by surprise!!! I love it!!

Dr Madeline Pine is a successful and published psychiatrist with a daughter and husband. She is contacted by a PI regarding a mysterious death of a young girl at a private boarding school. The police have ruled it as suicide without interest in pursuing it further, but the girl's family has hired the PI to dig into the case as they are not convinced. While Madeline is exhausted by her recent cases, she cannot say no to this one and agrees to help.

This one has everything I could want in a juicy psychological thriller. Its frantic pace plunges you into a world where women’s machinations, conspiracies, anger, and violence rule all in their path.

Expected publication June 27, 2023

You will want to buy this one when it comes out! HIGHLY recommend!!!
