When I requested this one, I had no idea this was a. part of a series, but it only took getting halfway through the book to notice that. So, here's my recommendation for you, you could 100 percent start this at number 15 in the series, and it will still shock you. I am very thankful to Linda Castillo, NetGalley, and Minotaur books for granting me an advanced copy of this fast-paced thriller that is sure to drop jaws.
How could you not love the Amish world of Kate Burkholder!!!???!!! Love, love, love this series. Great read :)
An Evil Heart is the 16th book in the Kate Burkholder series. I have read this series from the beginning and love this series. It starts with Aden Karn riding his bike to work. He is confronted by a man with a crossbow who shots him with a bolt. The man comes up to him and withdrew the bolt and then puts another one in his mouth and fires. He withdraws the the bolt.
Kate Burkholder, chief of police in Painter Ridge, Ohio, is at her sister Sarah's house being fitted for her upcoming wedding in a dress that has been in the family. Kate is not Amish anymore but her brother has agreed that she can be married at the family farm. She is marrying John Tomasetti who is an agent with Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Kate has left the Amish faith when she was 18. While there she gets a call of a dead body found by Julie Faulkner taking her children to school.
Upon arriving at the scene Kate finds an Amish teen who she recognizes as Aden. She knows his parents, She does not know what happened. She calls Doc Coblentz the coroner. Upon seeing the body he thinks that the victim was killed by a crossbow bolt. After the autopsy it is confirmed that it was the method of his death. Kate and her deputies start the investigation of why he was killed. Mike Rasmussen; sheriff of Holmes County is also brought into it. Later there is another body found. A woman named Paige Rossburger.
This story has so much going on that it is hard to put on paper. I will leave it to the reader to follow and enjoy. The story comes to an exciting conclusion with the attack on Kate when she finds out who killed Aden, The story also ends with her marriage to Tomasetti.
I look forward to the next book in this series and what is next for Kate and Tomasetti.
Thank you NetGalley and Minotaur Books for this ARC.
Another solid one by Linda Castillo. I love diving into Kates world and this one was no exception. The plot is fast paced and there is always a twist. The relationships between Kate and her Amish family were more developed in this one, which I enjoyed.
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the copy of An Evil Heart by Linda Castillo. This is one of my favorite series and Kate Burkholder is a great main character. I wait anxiously every year for the next book because I’m so hooked! This is book 15 in the series and the story remains fresh. I love the characters because they keep growing and changing. Castillo excels at humanizing her characters, so her books always touch my emotions. Be aware that there are some dark, disturbing scenes and situations, but they don’t detract from the great writing and characters. This series just gets better and better!
Chief of Police Kate Burkholder attempts to solve the murder of a young Amish man. Is he the person that he pretends to be? Or not? This book was sent to me electronically by Netgalley for review. Red herrings abound…secrets and lies…the characters are realistic, and the story moves quickly. Thanks to the publisher and author for this book. This book would make a good television show or a movie. Enjoy trying to solve the mystery. Good luck.
I love all of the Kate Burkholder books and this is no exception. Each book has a mystery that could be read as a standalone but it’s so much better if you read them all and become invested in the characters. I actually thought I had this one all figured out and it turns out I was wrong. I definitely love this series and want to read more of Kate and John.
I love this series, but this book didn’t measure up to the last few that I liked. Lots of trigger warnings in this book and may be difficult for some survivors of sex crimes. I appreciate that the character development continues in each book and I feel that realistically the characters are at a lull in their careers. This case lasted longer than it should have for these senior officers. If the story could have revolved around the newer officer struggling to solve the case and Kate more in the background struggling to let go of some control, I think that would have shown more growth in Kate & Tomasetti. I’m have also appreciated how Linda Castillo has created situations that show Kates PTSD issues that occur from her assault as a teen. This will continue and always be my favorite series.
A great addition to the series. The last couple of books did not impress me that much, but I think that we are back on the right track with this one.
I love this series of books and have every single one in my personal book collection as the Kate Burkholder series is well-written and utterly engrossing.
This book is an excellent addition to her series: a wonderful mystery, great characters, a gripping plot and a fascinating look into the Amish life and culture that Kate was a part of, a group of people that she now protects and serves.
I will highly recommend this book, along with all the others in the series, to readers of fiction, mysteries and people just looking for a new great read!
These books just get better and better with time. Linda Castilo's Kate Burkholder series is one of my absolute favorites. I adore the settings and characters. Love to see the continuation of the storyline. Can't wait to recommend this one. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
