This book was not my jam and I can tell you it was a me problem and not a book/author problem. This was my 1st book by Felix Blackwell but I will certainly give them another read!

I had high hopes for this book because I immensely enjoyed Stolen Tongues. However, I was left disappointed. It was not quite what I imagined coming from the author of a book I consider one of my favorites. This wasn't for me. However, I am still looking forward to more of the author's work.
Wow, not what I was expecting but man was this a good one!
This was a very action-packed book, full of survival scenes, and of course lots of hard goodbyes.
I loved the insight the author had on trauma how it affects people at different times of their lives and how it's not always what you would expect.
Its very different from anything that I have read and I am not quite sure exactly what I listened to. This is a good story, very strange but a good story.
Thank you Tantor Audio and Netgalley for the opportunity to listen and review this one!
Love the way Felix Blackwell weaves a story. Part 1 is a bit confusing but it all starts to slowly connect in part 2. Sometimes dark but beautifully written
When I chose this, I was in the mood for a horror book, and the description sounded intriguing.
I did find this quite chilling, and I think this was partly due to the talent of the audiobook narrator. It seemed that nightmares were a significant theme, and for that reason, I found it quite psychological. Were the characters' experiences actually happening to them, or were they simply dreams/nightmares? Either way, I felt invested while I was listening.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for a free copy to review.
The idea for the story is good, but it was more of a paranormal drama than horror.
This book wasn’t for me, for most of it, I found the story a bit confusing, there were connections between the different storylines, but they don’t come together until about the 90% make, which made it difficult to relate and care about the characters.
The narrator Curt Bonnem does a great job with the audibook. He used different voices that suited the character, and he doesn’t overact either, which is good.
*Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.*
I really enjoyed the narration of the audio book — it was eerie and dramatic enough to match the mood and setting perfectly. The story itself was good, and I really loved that it was told from a somewhat unorthodox perspective for this genre. I'm not usually that interested in horror but this book might just change my mind. Thank you for giving me access to the audio book!
I freaking loved Stolen Tongues so I couldn't wait to try out In the Devil's Dreams. Unfortunately, this one ended up as a DNF for me. I just couldn't get into the storyline and had trouble following it at times. I will certainly try the author again and am excited for the prequel to Stolen Tongues.
A man who's having marital problems goes home to visit his mother. He has a terrible nightmare while visiting that seems to spill over into real life. He can't tell what is real, and what's not.
Another man in another country is working late at his detective job to keep his nightmares at bay. After a power outage, a young boy stumbles into the police station in need of medical help. He rushes the boy to the hospital. Seated in a chair next to the boy's bed, he falls asleep only to also wake up in a nightmare.
I requested this from NetGalley since I had heard so much about his other book, Stolen Tongues. But this was just okay. Everything eventually tied together, but most of the book was rather disjointed. The loose ends did come together nicely though.
I had a hard time understanding what was going on in this story. I found it confusing and when I read the synopsis afterwards, had no idea that’s what it was suppose to be about. Now that being said, I do have a harder time following a story when I’m listening to the audiobook, so maybe that had a part in in? I’m not totally sure.
Now about the narrator… I enjoyed the narration for the most part, but when the female parts and the monster parts were spoken, it was so bad it was quite distracting and contributed to the story being less enjoyable for me.
This is the second book by Felix I have read, and even though I didn’t love this one, Felix’s writing style still shone through brightly. He definitely has a talent and this won’t be my last Felix Blackwell book 🙌
I'm a big fan of horror, and when I found this one on NetGalley, I knew I needed it. The twisting, mutating grossness of this tale helps to add to the atmospheric horror of In the Devil's Dreams by Felix Blackwell. All of the twists and turns put me in the mood for autumn and Halloween, and I was so happy to have had the opportunity to read and review this work of art.
I tried. I really tried. And I know the author is loved by so many but i wasn’t a huge fan of stolen tongues but wanted to try this. His concepts sound great but I cannot enjoy the delivery.
4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I really enjoyed this! I feel like the disturbing interesting story hooked me right from the start! This book has come amazing quotes throughout that i unfortunately couldn’t mark or highlight since I listen to audiobooks on my drive. I loved the twist in the ending & figuring out how it all connected! However I do feel it was longer than it should have been.
This book was good but a little predictable. I thought the narrated was perfect for the story though.
The book has an exciting plot that uses dreams to build terror into you while reading through the story. The pace is also fast, but the characters keep popping up and disappearing into the story which made it a little confusing for me to follow through. I feel this could be an audiobook issue to as navigating back and forth is a little different than what we do in physical books.
Overall an okayish read, for someone who enjoys creepy stories with paranormal effects and Frankestein theory will enjoy this book. I wish I could have enjoyed this more.
I was so excited for this book. I loved Stolen Tongues by Felix Blackwell and was excited to read more by him. Unfortunately, I ended up DNF'ing this one at the 40% mark. I just couldn't get into the stories. After listening to the entire first story and a good part of the second, I just didn't care what was happening and was honestly confused. I saw other reviews stating that it all makes sense in the end, I just don't want to push through an entire book that I'm not enjoying just so that it can make sense in the end.
If you enjoy a book that's a bit weird and are fine waiting through an entire book for the end payoff, than this one is for you. If not, please know that Felix Blackwell's other work is fantastic.
I enjoyed this book and the story told from the different aspects of different people. It was scary at times and I found myself wondering if I was going to have nightmares of the monster talking to me. I listened to the audiobook so it was extra entertaining. I will be reading more from this author!
The narrator of this audiobook is superb. He does the voices very well and it really added to the stories. The first half of this book was painfully slow. Honestly, I was bored to tears and I had no idea what was going on. I almost didn’t finish, but I had read other reviews that it all comes together in the second half. The second half was much more interesting and I loved the last few chapters. The ending wasn’t great. Overall, it was an interesting premise, but just fell extremely flat for me. I don’t necessarily regret reading it, it just wasn’t for me. Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the audio ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I’ve enjoyed Felix Blackwell”s books in the past and was excited to be able to read In the devils dreams, as it’s been in my TBR for nearly a year.
In the Devils dreams was amazingly written in the perspective of a young boy who seeks escape from monsters that are full of tricks and deception.
The narrator of the audiobook did a great job differentiating between the monsters, their noises, and the characters.
I’m giving this book 4/5 stars. I thought it was more on the slower paced, but kept me intrigued.
I know the review is short, I will have to come back and edit when I have more time, I just wanted to post this so I didn’t forget.
Thank you to NetGalley for the copy of the audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
From the beginning this book is a surreal nightmare. Unfortunately that makes it a little head scratching at times as the narrative turns left suddenly or throws in a curve ball. All that said, the writing is well done, it's just that surrealism isn't for me. Audiobook narration is well done.
