I thought the premise for this one was interesting, but I struggled with connecting with the characters and overall just found it to be okay.

The mystery of MQ Webb's "When You're Dying" unfolds around Verity, a terminally ill woman convinced that Dale, also injured in a fall, is responsible for her sister's disappearance. With Verity's relentless pursuit of the truth, suspicions arise about her credibility. Despite engaging twists, Verity's unlikeable character detracts from the overall enjoyment, particularly with improbable plot elements like a homemade syringe.

While the novel offers intrigue and surprises, including a predictable culprit but unforeseen motives, the unlikable protagonist hampers full immersion. Although prior familiarity with the series enhances context, this standalone installment still provides a decently entertaining read, albeit with reservations about continuing further.

A great thriller - I would recommend it!

Thank you to NetGalley for an advance read copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

I enjoyed this story. It was a "who donit" story whose ending I didn't guess until close to the end. The characters were so well written, I found myself talk to them saying things like - ohhh I wouldn't do that or you are so off base with that one.

It's a fast easy read for a mystery/thriller/"who donit". The characters were well developed. The story line moved at a good pace - although I felt at the very end it seemed to do a small jump.

This is the second book in a series, which I didn't know until I finished the book. You can definitely read it as a stand alone, but I will go back and read the first book as I enjoyed the writing of this author.

📚 "When You're Dying" by MQ Webb is an average psychological thriller that left me feeling underwhelmed. 💭 While the plot is decent, the characters lack depth and their choices often felt contrived. I struggled to connect with them and understand their motivations, which detracted from my overall enjoyment of the story. ⭐️⭐️⭐️ #WhenYoureDying #MQWebb #PsychologicalThriller #BookReview 📖

. Verity is giving a shocking diagnosis, before she dies she wants to find out what happened to her missing sister Ashlee. This was a really cool read, I enjoyed trying to figure out who did it.

Verity Casmere's shock diagnosis thrusts her into a profound contemplation of how she wishes to spend her remaining time, setting the stage for a mystery that intertwines with her own existential journey.

The central question haunting Verity—what happened to her missing sister, Ashlee—becomes a driving force in the narrative. The police suspect murder, and Verity's determination to uncover the truth forms the emotional core of the story. Webb skillfully navigates the emotional landscape of impending loss, creating a nuanced portrayal of Verity's internal struggles.

The character dynamics between Verity and Forensic Psychiatrist Oscar de la Nuit add depth to the narrative. The decision of Oscar to assist Verity in her quest for the truth sets off a chain of events with unforeseen consequences. The author delves into the complexities of their partnership, unraveling the layers of a dark secret that threatens to consume them both.

The novel's pacing is well-managed, keeping the reader engaged with a blend of suspense, emotional exploration, and the unraveling mystery. The plot is structured in a way that each revelation propels the story forward, maintaining a sense of urgency and anticipation.

The exploration of Verity's emotions and her journey towards acceptance and resolution resonates with readers on a profound level. Webb's writing captures the delicate balance between the weight of impending loss and the resilience of the human spirit.

In conclusion, "When You're Dying" is a compelling and emotionally charged novel that skillfully combines elements of mystery and existential exploration. M.Q. Webb's ability to navigate complex emotions and weave a gripping narrative makes this book a thought-provoking and engaging read. Excellent characters with really strong back stories will lead the reader into a deep level of investment in their fate. A strong thriller which is well written, with smooth dialogue and credible plot lines.

The second book in the Oscar de la Nuit series. I have not read the first book and I believe although they involved the same character they can probably be read as stand alones as the storylines are completely different. I also did not feel like there were any plot holes or questions from not having read the first.

Verity Casmere has been told she has metastasized breast cancer and she has months to live. She is determined to use her remaining time on earth investigating what truly happened to her sister Ashlee. Ashlee has been missing, and it's believed that she may have been murdered, however; no body was ever found. Forensic psychiatrist Oscar de la Nuit agrees to help Verity find out the truth. The truth brings secrets that no one saw coming.

This book was fast paced and intriguing. I could not wait to find out the ending!

Decent mystery story but very unlikeable main character. I stupidly didn’t realise it was part of a series which hindered my enjoyment.

Verity has been told that she is dying. Cancer is taking over her body, and her time is limited. Given the bleak news, Verity is determined to find out what happened to her sister, Ashlee, who seemingly vanished without a trace. The police suspect she was murdered, but her body has not been found. The book is told from the perspectives of Verity and a forensic psychologist named Oscar, who has agreed to help Verity try to get to the bottom of what happened to her sister. However, digging in the dark and uncovering secrets may lead to unexpected and unintended consequences.

This book was a fairly quick and fast paced read. I was left guessing until the very end. Overall it was an enjoyable read, and I would recommend it.

Thank you kindly to NetGalley and the publisher for the eARC to read and review.

Unfortunately, this one wasn’t quite for me. I struggled to get through it after several attempts (hence the delay with this review)…the main character drove me absolutely nuts, and the twists were too plentiful.

There are titles that capture your attention once you've seen them, and When You're Dying is one of them.

In this second installment of the Oscar de la Nuit series, we meet Verity Casmere, a social worker who is battling a disease and is looking for her missing sister, Ashlee. With her life on the line, Verity would do anything to find her sister, and with the help of Forensic Psychiatrist Oscar de la Nuit, the truth came out, but no one was ready for it.

I was a fan of the first novel, How to Spot a Psychopath so this followup is exciting and at the same time has an explosive revelation for Verity and Oscar. I didn't expect that the main culprit was just around the corner or how that person's mind was twisted.

What a mind-blowing plot, M.Q. Webber! Thank you very much for inviting me to read the awesome story. ☺️👏 I can't wait for another masterpiece from you.

Inodndt realise this was a follow up, and while you can read it as a stand-alone I’d suggest reading the first one beforehand. Beautifully written I loved it.

Verity is dying of cancer and needs to solve her sister's mysterious disappearance before she passes. She believes that a man named Dale took her sister and is the culprit of her sister's disappearance. This was an entertaining armchair detective novel with a decent ending. I look forward to more from this author.

A woman dying of terminal cancer and who has a missing sister. will she find the sister? A good mystery with a few twists.

I received a free copy from NetGalley. I did not read the first book and while mostly a stand alone, there were a few places it seemed like it might have helped to have read it first. A few thinks a little too unbelievable but mostly a quick paced thriller.

Date is for the review, not when it was read.

I really enjoyed this book, I loved the twists and the fact that I didn’t quite know what was happening until the end. That very rarely happens in mystery/thrillers so I was delighted. I don't know if I would say any of the characters were really likable, but you did understand their mindset and where their personalities came from. I feel like Verity drove the story without the aid of Oscar and I really enjoyed that. I liked the way the story was told, mixing little bits of the past and present at a time. It made it interesting to read and kept reading. I enjoyed Verity's ending, the mystery was solved in a way that makes sense and evokes emotion. The ending with Hayley felt like an after thought. It's not that it didn't make sense, more so just a little unnecessary. Poor Oscar had a giant life bomb dropped and then it felt like "let's just sprinkle a little bit more".

Not a bad story…I was trying to figure out who the killer was and there weren’t many options, so the twist was interesting…some sequences were not great, and questions I would have asked were not asked of the suspects
