Charlie's life is a mess. She's just been dumped, and she's homeless and jobless. Then, she gets a job on a farm, and not one but three guys take an interest in her. Suddenly, her future starts looking much brighter. Although this book features the annoying trope of a smart girl acting stupid when it comes to men, there is a lot to like about it. Charlie is a kindhearted likable character, and the book is filled with plenty of other kindhearted likable characters as well. There is plenty of found family. There is also some sweet romance although not enough of it. However, overall, it is an enjoyable read.
When 28-year-old Charlie find herself sleeping on a cott in her little sister‘s room after losing everything she knows she must make a change or get used to being homeless and alone first things first and that is the find a job,but this Time she wants one that counts and when she finds a help wanted sign for a farm co-op she deals to dream she may get it. On the same day she needs 10 pins because she is short at the coffee shop and a good looking man gives it to her when she runs it to this man again to learn his name is Gabriel and he really shouldn’t look behind him while riding his bike because it caused an accident . Although he seems very interested in Charlie she wants to stay man-free but that doesn’t stop her romantic interest from coming because she meets two more men that on paper and in real life seem perfect it’s too bad she has an old man rule that she is trying hard to stick to. I really enjoyed this book I love Pippa Fox’s romantic comedies and this is just another great example I thought Charlie and her dad‘s relationship was so sweet and thought the ending of the book was perfect it seems like when it comes to romantic comedies you know she’ll end up with someone and so that’s what makes the journey so much better but in this one I don’t think I knew the ending until it came and I truly and thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. I received this book from NetGalley and harperCollins UK but I am leaving this review voluntarily please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
And we're off to a sometimes magical tale of relationships, revenge, and ultimately happiness. An overall enjoyable read, which is written with humor and depth. I thought this an inspiring story. It was lovely to read about Charlie's adventures and how she manages to carry on, even though it's somewhat tinged with sadness after what happened to her older sister. For me the strengths were seeing Charlie find her strength at work. I just wish the writer focused on this aspect more, with less on the relationships as there was so many other interesting potential plots that could've been given more of a prominent role.
Charlie is 27 and just lost her boyfriend and her job. She bounces around different admin jobs until settling at a local farm. Her life has been such a mess, especially in the romance department, but now she has three men interested in her. Gabriel, the friend she met in the coffee shop who's brooding yet supportive, Will, the owner of the farm, and Franco, bad boy tattoo artist. How will she decide her future when her past is such a mess?
I had trouble connecting with the main character. She's supposedly 27, but she acts so juvenile and I couldn't understand why so much time was spent on the toxic relationship with Franco. I would have been happier with the story with just Gabriel and Will. The writing style was a little clunky and the story a little slow. The laugh out loud scenes in the story kept my interest until the end though.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Sometimes a reader and a book just don’t match, and that’s definitely the case with I Knew You Were Trouble and me. I am always happy to get a book from Harper Collins, UK, One More Chapter and from the description thought this would be a fun weekend read. However, it put me off from the start and I never could get in sync with it. The scene set up at the beginning felt like a movie where the camera is panning so you can get a sense of where you are, or intro notes to a play. It felt rushed and jumbled and that feeling continued when Charlie was introduced and throughout the book. She seems immature and repeatedly makes bad choices. It’s hard to feel much sympathy or empathy or even blame the fact that she lost her sister when they were young. The story also contains a little too much politics for me. A character with strong opinions is just fine, but preaching to the reader is not.
I didn’t rate the book lower than 3 stars because while it wasn’t a fit for me it might be just the thing for other readers. There is not so much wrong with it as that it just is not put together into an enjoyable, coherent story as I would have liked. Thanks to Harper Collins, UK, One More Chapter for providing a copy of the book via NetGalley for my honest review. I voluntarily leave this review; all opinions are my own.
I struggled to get into this book and only persevered as I had this ARC and review to write. Pip Fox is a new author to me and in parts felt the book was a little confusing. Having said that I would try more of her books.
I had hoped that this would be a fun summer read, but the character of Charlie is so immature that I couldn't relate to her at all. And the plot unfolds too slowly, making it hard to stay interested. I know many romcom fans will love this, but it was just not for me.
Super fun breakup romcom!
Although this is Pip Fox's first book, I hope it's not the last! This is a fun, light, quick read, perfect for the summer poolside or beach. Our heroine has her problems and her flaws. She loses her job and her boyfriend (and home) during one nightmarish day. After some problems (and a bit of prevarication) she lands a new job in a most unexpected place, and has many adventures, some of which are ill-advised. This book opened my eyes to her new job and jobsite, I didn't know such wonderful places existed (don't want to spoil the plot for you). Yes, there's three guys and some shenanigans... Anyway, I recommend this book, so long as you don't take it (and yourself) terribly seriously!
Thank you to the publisher who lent me an e-arc via netgalley. This review is optional and my own opinion. PS I stayed up all night reading this book!
Charlie has gotten fired from yet another job while she is trying to hold it together after a breakup. She knows she needs to change it up and get it together so when an opportunity comes to her she jumps at it. A new start, an exciting new path is exactly what she needs. Rather than that be her focus as well as working on herself to figure out why she is where she is, she finds herself faced with three very different, but great guys with lots of potential for her so she decides to test the waters with all of them. You just know this isn’t going to go well. Could have been cute, but yet some of her behaviors were not cool. She was emotionally immature and much younger than her chronological age. Wanted to like it more than I did. Finished it because I kept wanting/hoping it and Charlie would get/be better. Probably wont be going back for the next installment.
Let’s all just fall in love with the brand New Romantic comedy for the Summer of 2023…..
This book was such an easy read, i just kept turning the pages and reading more and more! All that i wanted to do was find out what was going to happen next and the sooner the better.
I really enjoyed this story, it was a story of relationships and revenge and had quite a few funny moments that had me laughing out loud in quite a few different places.
Charlie was a wonderful and interesting character and i enjoyed following her adventures in life……
Charlie is 27, loses her job and her partner. Time to start a new life at a city farm as administrator, with a choice of 3 new men. A good "plot", some laugh out loud moments, and romance as well -an ideal summer read .
I’ve been reviewing for a few years now and I quickly know when a book isn’t going to be for me.
Unfortunately, I Knew You Were Trouble is one of those books. Early on I struggled with the writing style and found Charlie a bit annoying. Because of this I wasn’t invested in the story and had no interest to continue.
The book begins with Charlie's life falling apart. She loses her job, her relationship finishes & she becomes homeless. Charlie has to move back in with her family & she begins to look for a job. She starts a job as an administrator at a city farm, all very different to her past jobs. Everything seems to fall into place. A chance encounter happens & she meets Gabriel, a polish butcher, she meets Lydia at the farm & moves in with her & life carries on. Poor judgements around men affect her life & nothing happens without something going wrong.
I loved this book, warm, enchanting & such great characters. Modern day problems happen, but friendships help overcome them. Enjoyed the setting of the city farm & I learned so much about the running of such a place & respect my local city farm more.
Enjoy this lovely book.
Knew You Were Trouble Review
I latched on to Charlie right away. I felt for her and could tangibly feel the stress and doubt in those early pages. I liked the author's ability to craft the characters -- you love and hate them.
Unfortunately, this book missed the mark for me. The start was slow and it felt like something big was coming, but it just didn't. The plot also has too much going on. I had a hard time having a frame of reference of where we were and where we could possibly go. It could've done without a few of the actions/chunks.
The ending of the book is enjoyable and I'm happy that I finished this book. The last 30% is the best.
Also, kudos to the author for crafting the grossest of villains.
I really didn't get on with this book at all, I found it very shallow, and superficial. I just didn't like the main character Charlie at all who seemed very immature, self-centered and ditsy besides she irritated me beyond measure. Some of the peripheral characters were quite well drawn and likeable and I felt sorry for the three men Charlie messed about. I've generously awarded 3 stars as, whilst I didn't like it, I feel possibly late teens/early 20s might. Predictable story line and I did persevere although I did skim a lot and found it picked up towards the end. Not for me.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book. All opinions are 100% my own.
The title and cover for this book don’t support the plot at all. Apart from the pig on the cover, there is no indication that this book takes place mostly at an inner city farm. The ‘I knew you were trouble’ title only applies to one of the three love interests.
The pacing of this book was good, as was the gradual introductions and stories with the three love interests. The ending felt a little bit rushed, and the final chapter should have been designated as an epilogue to indicate the time jump that took place.
A fun rom com - great for fans of British novels! Cute cast of characters. Charming and delightful .
Really really struggled to get in to this one.. I loved the sound of it from the blurb...but sadly this was not reflected in the book. Didn't like the style it was written in. Sad to say I gave up.. something which is rare for me.
I Knew You Were Trouble by Pip Fox features Charlie, a down-on-her-luck girl fired from yet another job. She’s flighty and recovering from a breakup. When a new job opportunity presents itself, she decides to take a chance and do something different, which is a good decision. However, that’s the last time she makes a good decision because she is presented with three diverse boyfriend candidates: a super hunky player, a politician, and a hard-working immigrant. I’ll give you three guesses about which guy she picks. The story has potential, but firstly the author had to drag us all through her political opinions. Also, there was not much chemistry between any of the three guys, who could’ve all used some personality development. I was disappointed this one didn't live up to expectations. #IKnewYouWereTrouble #sillygirl #animalfarm #love #loss #OneMoreChapter @netgalley

I received this ebook from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion and review. At the beginning of this book, I almost quit reading it. It felt super unrealistic and cheap. The storyline got better towards the end, but the mess Charlie gets in is extreme and over the top. This book would have been way better without Franco in it at all. She could have created a storyline without him and it would have made the book way more interesting.
