I'm in the minority, but unfortunately I didn't like this.
The dialogue, especially in the first few chapters, was dire and completely unnatural. Dialogue was used to tell the reader things about the characters which resulted in some completely unrealistic conversations.
The timeline was all over the place eg. The night before the barbecue Carrie and Joe were out at a pub together and argued about the barmaid, then a few chapters later it was claimed that the night before the barbecue Joe was at home arguing with Rose whilst Carrie was out with friends?! Also Ava is described as nearly 13 and Jacob is 16, meaning there would be less than 4 years between them, and yet Jacob was supposedly 4 when Lucy met Tom? Even if Lucy got pregnant the very day they met, that still doesn't add up.
Sloppy timelines aside, I guessed the twist in the very first 'Rose' chapter, so there was no mystery for me reading the rest of it.
Others seem to have enjoyed this so I wouldn't want to put anyone else off reading it, but for me it was a huge miss.
I was hooked on this storyline from the very beginning. It was told with alternating viewpoints and the chapters are short enough to keep the reader interested and engaged. I was turning to the next page as fast as I could. I did predict the twist somewhat early on but still enjoyed the book. The main character was flawed and interesting. Overall, I would recommend this book!
Firstly I would like to thank netgalley, and Bookoutune, and the fantastic author Kathryn croft for an early copy of her book.
My rating for this book is 3.5 rounded to four, Lucy and Tom a married couple with there older son Jacob and Daughter Ava,moved to a new lo a new location. Her son Jacob took his girlfriend home Rose after a barbecue at there house and she disappears. This book tells the story from Rose's mother,Rose, and Lucy trying to find her. It all points to one person Jacob, was he hiding vital information. A good read for me missing the twists as easy to guess the ending.. looking forward to reading more of her books.
This book will be reviewed on goodreads and Amazon UK.
Whoa boy - there is a lot going on in this little novel - all in a good way. I was graciously provided an ARC copy that I requested based on the description of the novel. This was my first Kathryn Croft novel but it won't be my last. If I had to choose a word to describe the book it would be "secrets" - everyone has one and over the course of the book you come to find out some are relatively benign while others - change lives. Not only is it told from different viewpoints, but also along a sliding timeline of before and after Rose goes missing so it keeps you guessing.
Another great psychological. thriller from by Kathryn Croft. Kept me engrossed from start to finish with many unexpected twists.
The Lie by Kathryn Croft had me thoroughly engrossed from beginning to end.
Lucy thinks that a recent move will bring about a new start for her family, and a chance to leave the past in the past. Her family seems to be happy in their new surroundings, hosting a barbeque to get to know their neighbours. Her son Jacob has even found a girlfriend, Rose, and all seems to be well with the world, at least for now. But the morning after the party, Lucy receives a call from Rose's mother saying that her daughter has not returned home. Jacob swears that he escorted Rose to her door, so where is she now? Does Jacob know more than he is willing to admit?
Kathryn Croft's novels have become automatic reads for me. If you are new to her work, add this one to your TBR now, and prepare to become hooked. 4.5 stars
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
This is an enjoyable mystery that I could not put down. Enjoyed the focus on teenage characters within their (very different) family systems, the many layers of relationships, and the multiple points of view. Recommended for anyone who enjoys domestic suspense. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC.
Lucy and Tom have moved to a new home in Surrey with their children, Jacob and Ava. The day after the move they have a BBQ, Lucy receives a call from Jacob's girlfriend's mother, Carrie. She says Rose is not home and asks if she is at their house. Rose is not there, but Jacob was the last one to see her and walked her home the night before she went missing. All signs are pointing to Jacob as being guilty, but there is no evidence to confirm this. Where is Rose and what happened to her? Everyone that knows Rose doesn't think she would just disappear.
THE LIE was another engaging read by Katheryn Croft. It's told in multiple points of view from Rose, Lucy and Carrie. I could not put it down. I really had no clue what happened to Rose, or if Jacob was guilty. I will say I was taken by surprise when I found out the truth behind THE LIE. This was a very clever book. My second book that I have read from this author and I can't wait to read more from her!
Many thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for my honest review.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I started this book not so sure if I was going to like it and boy was I wrong. This one sucked me right in and I was invested to the end. I did start to get an idea of what happened to rose when I was little more than halfway along and I was right. However this was still a really good book. It did delve into some strange family dynamics but that just made it more twisted.
This is an engrossing page turner with striking imagery and breakneck twists. The author has a crisp writing style which guides readers through this layered and innovative thriller. It was a treat to read.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Heart pounding thriller that left me on the edge of my seat. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this one. Definitely one of the best books this year.
Lucy and her family begin their new life after they move house, but when her son Jacob's new girlfriend Rose vanishes after he supposedly walks her home, suspicion lands on him. Where is Rose, and does Jacob know? Can Lucy find the answers before her family's lives are completely ruined?
A thrilling book that keeps you turning the pages until the shocking ending. Full of twists and turns and shocks. Brilliant!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance copy of the book in return for my honest feedback.
A new home was meant to be a new start for the whole family and at their barbeque Lucy watches as her husband entertains their new friends while her daughter does cartwheels on the lawn even Jacob her son has a new girlfriend.
Jacob walks Rose home later on but the next day her mum rings to say she never came home,he promises he saw her go in,but Roses keys are found in their garden and they were seen arguing in the street.Lucy will do anything to protect her son from the questions and accusing looks but everyone is telling her she can't believe him,Lucy's family have their own secret that no one must know about and as the search for Rose continues can she keep him and the secret hidden,
Another great read from Kathryn Croft well written characters all with dark pasts another perfect page turner that will keep you guessing.
Highly recommended
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the Arc
“The Lie” is a thriller by Kathryn Croft. Ms. Croft is a new to me author, but this book had me hooked from the beginning. This story is told from three points of view: Rose (the missing girl), Carrie (her Mum), and Lucy (Rose’s boyfriend’s mother). I found few of the characters likable in this book - but in one of those few times it actually worked. Could I trust any of the characters? No, though I did believe that the police were doing the best they could under the circumstances. While the police aren’t the focus of this book, I did feel a lot of sympathy for them. There are a lot of red herrings, unreliable characters, and twists. It was very easy to keep the main characters apart. If you like thrillers with twists and some teenage angst, this book may be up your alley.
Good book! This book had a bit of everything! It had suspense, intrigue, action, murder, mystery, A crazy who done it and so many crazy twists and turns! The storyline was very interesting and had me glued to my Kindle! I will definitely recommend reading this book as it was well worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
I have nothing but praise for THE LIE.
Two families, one murder, lives entwined.
Fabulously written thriller with very believable characters.
This has to be Kathryn Crofts best book so far.
My thanks to netgalley and the publisher for my advanced copy.
I can see me reading this again at some point.
This was another excellent psychological thriller from Kathryn Croft. I could not put it down once I started so many twists and turns that had be gasping at one point.
Lucy and her family have moved to a new area. The night after Lucy has thrown a barbecue her son Jacob walks his girlfriend Rose to her door he insists he seen her enter the house but rose didn’t make it home she is now missing. Lucy believe Jacob is innocent but why is he lying then.
Will be recommending this to everyone fantastic thriller which will have you on edge of seat until the final page.
My Review:
OMG!!!!! Loved!!!!! Her best work yet!!!!!Once I saw this author had another book coming out I just knew I had to read it. This author is by far one of my favorites of all time. I have read most of books and only have two more to go of her earlier ones. There are so many reasons why I love all her books. It would be too hard to list them all so I’m just going to talk about a few things that I love about them. Ok, let’s starts off with the characters in her books. They are fantastic and written so well. You never know who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. I love trying to guess. Next up are the plots. They are always filled with so many twists and turns which keep me up all night reading to find out what happens next. Like with this one I couldn’t put it down for the life of me. Each chapter left me wanting more and more. I just had to know what happened otherwise I wouldn’t be able to concentrate on anything else. Last but not least the endings. They shock me to my core and leave me speechless. This one had me on pins and needles. I couldn’t believe who did it and why. I was screaming OMG the whole time I was reading it. I even reread it just to be sure. For all these reasons and more I love this authors books so much. I can’t wait for her next one.
In conclusion, the plot, the characters and all the twists in this book made this book an enjoyable read. I would definitely recommend it and happily give it 5 Hearts❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I set aside a whole day to read "The Lie" because I had high expectations and wanted to devour it in one hit with no interuptions. My plan paid off, this is Kathryn Croft at her best. It's so gripping and thrilling. Compassionately written, with undercurrents of something menacing lurking in the background.
I love how all the characters' secrets and lies slowly expose and unravell, creating emotional turmoil.
Oh my word, what an ending! Completely unpredictable but believable! Highly recommended.
Lucy and her family have moved to a new home. They host a barbeque for their friends and Lucy's son escorts his girlfriend Rose to her door.
Rose disappears sometime afterwards, and Jacob is chief suspect.
Lucy believes her son and has to find a way to prove that he is innocent. Little does she know that Jacob's past will be resurrected and could possibly be his downfall.
I enjoyed this book, it was quite the page turner. The reader is kept guessing about the dark past and secrets that the family are hiding, and the story told from Rose's point of view hints of a dark terrible secret.
It was very suspenseful, and while I did guess who the killer was quite early in the book, I enjoyed the way the truth came to light.
Thanks to the publishers and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
