This was definitely the best thriller I’ve read this year. Hopefully, it broke the cycle of extremely bad thrillers I’ve been going through. The writing was really engaging. At first, I wasn’t happy with the second-person narration from Rose’s point of view, but when we got to part three of the book, I actually thought it was genius. The reveal came as a complete shock and I truly couldn’t put the book down.

This book has definitely put Kathryn Croft on my favorite authors list and I’ll be reading every book she comes up with from now on.

The Lie by Kathryn Croft is a highly recommended domestic suspense mystery.

Lucy and Tom and their children Jacob and Ava threw a barbeque for their new neighbors in Surrey signifying their new start. Jacob's girlfriend Rose and her mother Carrie are among the guests. Ava adores Rose and spent much of the evening talking to her. Seemingly, it was a successful evening. Then early the next morning Carrie calls and says Rose is missing. Jacob says he walked Rose home, but there are some questions about his claim. Carrie is certain Jacob had something to do with her daughters disappearance.

The first thing you need to know is that The Lie will hold your attention from start to finish. The second is that the title of the novel is a misnomer as everyone seems to be lying about something. There is plenty of deception swirling around everyone as they are even lying to themselves.

Lucy, Carrie, and Rose narrate the story through chapters told in their alternating points-of-view. This allows insight into their thoughts, personal lives, and eventually their secrets. Honestly, I didn't trust anyone in this novel as they all seemed suspect and sketchy at times. Characters are developed, but slowly as people demonstrating who they really are is part of the plot. The surprising twist in the ending wasn't really shocking because no one is particularly believable. If you like mysteries featuring flawed characters in dysfunctional families, The Lie will entertain you.

The Lie is an unputdownable domestic thriller that had me on the edge of my seat. There were so many twists and turns that at times my head was in a spin. Croft has written a book which had me engrossed from the very start. I honestly didn’t guess any of the twists and when they were revealed I was gob smacked. The Lie was another fantastic read by this very talented author and I loved it. 5⭐️

Thanks Bookouture and NetGalley for the advanced electronic copy of this thriller that’s out tomorrow!
What a wild ride! I love multiple POV’s and dual timelines and where these intersect in this story, I actually gasped.
When 16 year old Rose disappears after being walked home by her boyfriend Jacob after a barbecue at his house, all suspicion is on him. This story is from his perspective but mostly from that of his family, the mother of the missing Rose and Rose herself. There is some police procedural, but this is mostly a domestic psychological thriller that is well worth the read.

I gotta say I’m so confused by this book. The ending makes you question everything. I hated how you can tell what one of the twists was very early on. It was a quick read though. I didn’t love it but didn’t hate it.

I found this book to be a little bit slow but I did enjoy it. It definitely kept me guessing until the very end. I liked how each chapter is told from a different point of view. I’m looking forward to reading more books by Kathryn!

I hadn’t read for a while, having started a couple of books that I just couldn’t get into. I’ve read this author several times before, and I hoped this could be the book to get me started again. It did not disappoint!
It had all the necessary ingredients, easy to get straight into, easy to read, lots of threads to keep you guessing, and a twist right at the end.
None of the characters were very likeable, and they all told lies. It was quite easy to keep changing opinion of who was guilty, after each chapter.
All in all, this was a great read and I would recommend to anyone that enjoys an easy to read psychological thriller.

The Lie is definitely one of my favorite reads so far in 2023! Kathryn Croft has the gift of making the story flow even when nothing particularly thrilling is happening. This is a masterfully built whodunit with multiple POV that will leave you clueless almost until the end (I was 90% through it when I realized that all my assumptions were false)!

Without giving spoilers, the plot basically revolves around an essential psychological concept: confirmation bias. I wouldn't say it's full of plot twists because the story is structured in a way that you constantly doubt about every single character, everyone seems guilty in a way and feels like a liar with something to hide. But there's only one true monster in this enthralling domestic thriller, and you won't see that coming...!

Thank you NetGalley & Bookouture for the opportunity to read & review an ARC of The Lie. This is my first read by this author and I promise it won’t be my last. Although I did figure out the “whodunnit” & why they done it early on, it did not take away from the storyline or suspense. I started this book in the middle of the night when my baby woke me up & I just knew I was going to finish it by the end of the day. This is one of those novels that immediately draws you in & leaves you unable to turn the pages fast enough! This gem is actually being published on Thursday and I definitely recommend it to anyone who enjoys domestic thrillers!

Thanks NetGalley for the ARC of The Lie by Kathryn Croft, published by Bookouture
This was a great read, with twists at the end that I didn't see coming.
The story is told by 3 of the characters, Rose who has gone missing, Carrie Rose's mom and Lucy who is Jacob's mom and Rose's "boyfriend "
Lucy is holding a BBQ for some neighbor's, Rose has decided to leave early and Jacob walks her home, and now Rose is missing and everyone focuses on Jacob as the suspect.
I really enjoyed this novel, good plot and characters well introduced and described. I will be adding this author to my "to read" list for sure

I actually enjoy reading Kathryn Croft's books and this book is also an unputdownable thriller that will nearly give you chills.

The story begins with a barbecue party with Lucy inviting her friends in the new town they had moved in. But the next day, Rose, who is Lucy's son's girlfriend had gone missing and Jacob is the main suspect as there are witnesses claiming to see them arguing hours before Rose disappeared. But within a few days Rose's body was found which implied that she was murdered. Did Jacob really kill Rose or is he really innocent as he claims? Meanwhile Rose's mother Carrie is determined to prove that Jacob killed her daughter.

The story is fast paced and told in three POVs--Lucy, Carrie and Rose. The story is fast paced and page turner and there were some twists and turns--all characters in the story are unreliable and all are lying to each other so who is actually telling the truth? The ending was a surprising twist.Overall if you are looking for a page turning unputdownable thriller, I recommend this book--worth four stars.

Many thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.

I received a copy of this book for free, and I leave my review voluntarily.

Kathryn Croft is the bestselling author of eleven psychological thrillers and to date she has sold over one and a half million copies of her books. After twelve years living in London, she now lives in Guildford, Surrey, the place she grew up, with her husband, two children and two crazy cats.

“We all have secrets, don’t we?”

Lucy is a devoted mother. She adores her children, and husband. When tragedy strikes, the last thing she expects is for her son to be named a suspect. Now, it seems she is the only person who believes in his innocence- will the truth really set her free?

I enjoyed how fast-paced this book was. I devoured it in a matter of hours. The timing and the pacing within the story made putting the book down impossible.

I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and timelines used for the narration of this book. It was awesome seeing the same situations from three different people.

The characters were all well done. I liked Lucy; she was loyal and unyielding when it came to protecting her kid. Carrie was a fantastic character and a beautiful representation of grief.

I figured out the twist, but the journey to confirming I was correct was great. The way the puzzle pieces all fell, it was murky for a while. There were moments when everyone was a potential suspect!

If you enjoy books that get your heart racing and are impossible to put down, this is for you!

I really loved this book, it got you hooked from the first few pages which I love, such an intriguing story and so many twists and turns, it had you thinking one way and then another that you could not leave it down, at the end of each page you just had to read on and on. I love a book like this that had the characters life’s together and unfolding there life’s bit by bit. Would really highly recommend this book for a very interesting read.

I’d like to thank Bookouture and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘The Lie’ by Kathryn Croft in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Lucy and Tom with their children Jacob and Ava hold a barbecue in their garden inviting friends and neighbours together with Jacob’s girlfriend Rose and her mother Carrie. The following day Carrie phones to say that Rose didn’t arrive home from the barbecue although Jacob insists he walked her home and saw her enter her front door. But as a neighbour says she saw Jacob and Rose arguing the police question Jacob and class him as a suspect as they believe he’s lying.
‘The Lie’ is a cleverly written thriller that’s told through the perspectives of the different characters. The plot contains all the suspense and drama I’ve come to expect from this author and as the twists and turns are revealed the tension goes up a gear until it reaches a super-exciting conclusion that’s a huge surprise and not at all what I was expecting. I’ve found this to be a thoroughly enjoyable this thriller that’s had me so involved I couldn’t stop reading. I can wholeheartedly recommend it to other readers who are looking for an absorbing thriller to lose themselves in.

My son said he was walking his girlfriend home. But now she is missing.

Our new home was meant to be a chance for us to start again, to make new friends and forget the past. And as I look round the barbeque we've thrown for our neighbours, I dare to dream that things will be alright. I watch my husband joking as he flips burgers and my daughter turning cartwheels on our sun-bleached lawn. And then my gaze falls on my son Jacob and his new girlfriend, Rose, in her light blue jeans and her green crop top. There is a worried expression clouding her beautiful eyes. The next day I got a call from Rose's mother that chills me to the bone. Rose never returned home after our party.

Lucy and Tom Adams had moved out of London and now reside in Surrey. Life is quieter for them until Jacob's girlfriend, Rose, goes missing after Jacob had walked her home from our family barbeque. I was hooked straight away. Several times I thought I had it all worked out, then a twist would come along and send me in a different direction. The story is told from Lucy, Carrie and Rose's perspectives. The pace is fast throughout. I did eventually work out where the story was going, but that takes nothing away from a good storyline. I wasn't keen on any of the characters. Lucy frustrated me.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #KathrynCroft for my ARC of #TheLie in exchange for an honest review.

When young Rose goes missing, everything seems to point to her boyfriend Jacob knowing more than he lets on. Everyone seems to hold a piece of the jigsaw, but are they willing to tell what they know? Written with feeling and suspense, this book kept me wanting to know more and frustrated me with not being able to work out who was keeping the biggest secret!

I just love Kathryn Croft. Her books are always page-turners that I can't flip through fast enough, yet I never want to end. You know how much I love this author and her writing? I guessed the "big twist" pretty much immediately and I still somehow was filled with so much suspense, dread, rage, empathy and so many more emotions; the characters were just so real and complex.

There were so many moments in my reading that I had to pause to think of how I would respond if I was in the same situation. It's not often that I come across a suspense novel that forces me to reflect so much! Even when I wasn't actively reading, I felt like I was thinking about this book....yes, for the whole two days it took me to fly though this one!

Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this eARC in return for my honest review.
