Highly enjoyed it. There were plot twists all the time! It was a quick and easy book to get through and had my full attention. Very much recommend!
I'm pretty sure there's a twist with every chapter. Atleast thats what it felt like! Dark, suspenseful and thrilling! Hard to put down, great book.
Thrilling. Absolutely addictive like every single one of this amazing author's books. Loved loved loved this one. Just wow.
From the first chapter, you realize that this is not what you would expect a medical thriller to be. The story slowly builds and builds and the characters become more and more intertwined for unknown reasons. This has to be a stand-alone story. I can’t imagine how these characters can continue. I highly recommend this story for an exciting read.
I would recommend this book! I don't think I've read medical thrillers before but I really enjoyed this one. It was easy to read, with gripping storyline and the characters were nicely written.
A novel of suspense told from multiple POV’s. I really liked reading this story this way and I really liked the attorney that was out for blood. The blurb really drew me in and the book really lived up to the hype for me. I read this in one sitting because I couldn’t put it down. Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this ARC.
Anne Wiley is a cardiothoracic surgeon & the poster girl for the hospital. She is carrying out a procedure on a patient & is having difficulty restarting his heart. She goes through the right steps but calls an end to attempts to resuscitate. She is devastated. She has never lost a patient before & the misogynistic anaesthetist protests that she did not continue long enough. Anne knows there is some truth in that- she recognised the patient & that wasn't the person she thought she spoken to pre-op.
Assistant State Attorney Paula Fuselier is on a high. She can see the career goal in sight & with her lover on course to be Mayor. When she hears about this death she sets out to destroy Anne & she is not used to losing!
This is a story told from the perspective of each of these women. It was very well done. I started out being quite neutral about them but before long I was firmly in Anne's corner! Suddenly instead of being confident & assured she feels persecuted & riddled with doubts. It was a totally absorbing read that started off quite slowly but soon I had to keep reading one more chapter.
Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book- it was a cracker!
Thank you to the publisher for my copy - all opinions are my own.
This book didn't quite work for me as a reader - I wanted to like this one so much more but I found myself struggling a bit with a few pieces of this story. One - the "murder" of the patient that sets off the whole series of the book in reality seemed like a not-very-questionable way for a patient with heart problems to die on an operating table, and in turn it made Anne's (the surgeon) reaction to being found out seem really over the top and odd. The disconnect on how extreme her reaction to what happened was distracting for me overall in trying to stay engaged to the plot.
Two - the whiplash of Paula's see-sawing level of interest in her lover was confusing. I had to flip back a few times because I kept feeling like I was missing something important as to why her mood seemed to keep swinging back and forth from casual indifference to bunny boiling passion.
Overall, it is an entertaining enough read, but just one that missed the mark a tad for me.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for the opportunity to read and give an honest review of this book.
This is a complicated story with interwoven plots. We know that Dr. Anne has a spotless record as a heart surgeon. She has never lost a patient until that fateful day. She feels guilty for not continuing to try and resuscitate the patient after she recognized him.
The book explores Anne’s family history and slowly builds with the story of her adopted sister Melanie. Anne’s husband Derrek is the love of her life but, is he really who she thinks he is. He has his own agenda and career plans.
Why is the prosecutor from the State’s Attorney’s office so intent on finding a reason to prosecute Dr. Anne? Lots of questions! The author writes a good complicated thriller. It was a great read.
Anne Wiley is a prestigious doctor that followed in her father’s footsteps to became a heart surgeon. She has some of the most incredible team members by her side and they have never lost a patient.
Dr. Wiley gears up for a routine surgery that goes terribly wrong and after resuscitation efforts are preformed, time of death is called. When she sees the face of her patient, she starts questioning herself and her surgery efforts. She’s known this man outside the hospital, she’s known him since he hurt her sister 25 years ago. Did she purposefully kill him or was his heart so damaged that he died on his own?
If someone finds out that she might have murdered this man, she could lose her license and end up in prison. Paula from The State Attorney’s office has been notified and she’s out for blood. Who is this woman and why does she want to tear Anne’s life apart?
This book reminded me of a soap opera but I couldn’t stop reading! This was my first time reading a book by Leslie Wolfe and I loved the way she executed so many plot twists. The author did a great job concocting such an unlikable character, I don’t remember how many times I gasped and yelled at her while reading.
I would’ve given this book five stars but the ending was abrupt and I feel like there were a few loose ends that needed to be addressed but overall I loved it.
My thoughts: Honestly I thought I was reading two different books at the beginning of this book following two very separate people, the link between the two not mentioned at first. I was very confused for a second. But this book ended up surprising me; it was pretty good. I was really gunning for one character and absolutely detested the other, very good character writing! When everything falls into place, I was very surprised.
The best Psychological Thriller I’ve read in years
The phrase Bunny Boiler springs to mind when you read the first few chapters but by the time I finished the book I had attached the phrase to another character, and that was after swapping between them all the way through
Both are driven women, but they are driven by very different forces.
A deliciously toe curling read at times that I never once wanted to put down.
I found this interesting medical read with some of the plot devices a bit strange ie this was the first patient that she ever lost and then goes full blown anxiety re being arrested. I liked the way that I was guessing about the reasons for so long.
I was given a free copy by netgalley and the publishers but the review is entirely my own.
A gripping read. Anne's patient dies on the operating table, then district prosecutor investigates Anne seemingly for no reason. Had me hooked from the start and could not put it down. Good characters, well plotted that moves along nicely
I received this book from Bookouture and Netgalley for a review.
This was an enjoyable read but really slow. I had a hard time staying engaged with the story because it felt like it was full of filler. In between the filler the story is amazing and suspenseful. The story is not what I thought it was going to be, which is a good thing. I don't think my version would have been as good. All in all, it is a good read, just slow for my liking.
Wowza I was definitely entertained with this one. This book is super fast paced and I don't know if I've read many medical thrillers so that was definitely interesting. I also could tell the author did a good amount of research to make this believable which I always enjoy. Overall, would recommend!
I just finished The surgeon by Leslie Wolfe..
Anne has it all. The career, the husband.. having never lost a patient on the table was the pinnacle of her career… until the day her latest patient's heart just won't start. 23 mins is all she gives it when she finally sees his face and she calls time of death without trying to revive him. She knows him and he got what he deserved….
This book was a slow burn but it was a good slow burn. I thought the plot was very clever and well executed. I have to admit, I didn't see the twists coming. I thought the ending was really quite clever and the writing was lucid and it flowed really well.
What didn't I like… the characters were one dimensional. They had no depth to them at all. This book could have been exceptional had the character development had been there but there was nothing of substance there. I think the author was going for a plot heavy book but it didn't quite work for me.
I still really enjoyed the book though. If you like psychological thrillers, add this one to your tbr!
4 stars. Thank you to @netgalley @bookouture for my review copy.
Full of twists and turns. Keeps you guessing by giving you tiny hints and then adding another twist. Great read, phenomenally written characters. Very enjoyable!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. Thank you NetGalley, Leslie Wolfe and Bookouture for hearing my honest review. Looking forward to reading more with you

That's one thing you never think of before you go under the anaesthetic. What if the surgeon knows you...holds a grudge against you. Would it be so easy for them to end your life rather than save it?
The Surgeon is a moderately paced thriller, with the authors skillful writing compelling you to keep reading. It's the first I've read by Wolfe, but will definitely keep them on my radar for future reads.
Extremely twisty, suspenseful and definitely one to recommend.
Many thanks to Bookouture for my tour spot.

While this is a bit of a slow burn, with all the twists that you don’t see coming, it makes it go by much more quickly. While you may not like either of the women. In the end I believe you will see why each did what they did. A good beach read.
